5/22 - 6:07pm - White Sox ( suck ) vs Toronto Maple Leafs
southsider2k5 replied to hi8is's topic in 2024 Season in Review
One more thought far from the idea that draft position is the thing here, I think it also goes to the Sox being willing to show patience with guys who aren't the almost done type of products versus jamming the Fulmers/Crochet/Vaughn/Madrigals of the world who they thought could help them today. Guys like Shultz and Montgomery have actually spent time at the various levels of the minors with the understanding that it was going to be a slow roll. Does taking a bit longer of a time frame with some of these guys make a difference? Who knows. All I know is I can't recall a team like Tampa, LA, or Cleveland rushing anyone to the majors this quickly, and guess who seems to turn out finished products better than the Sox? -

I mean I get the idea. The trade off is finding an almost certain major leaguer worth more or less than a guy who has a very high chance of washing out with a smaller chance of making it, but even smaller at being a game changer. The Sox thought they could get sure fire 10 year starters in Vaughn and Madrigal. There is value in that. The Sox were drafting guys they thought were somewhere between 45-55 type players. Some of these other guys are 30-65 type players, but the odds put them on the low end. The problem is the Sox also were absolutely terrible at turning these guys into those players. But it isn't like the Sox were the only ones looking at Vaughn and Madrigal. If the Sox don't take them, they get taken very quickly after that. But what happened to them after that is what I think the problem is. Does a Cleveland turn Madrigal into another Kwan? Do the Rays turn Andrew Vaughn into the kind of .280/30hr/100 rbi guy that the draft world thought he would be? -

Even worse to make a statement and then pretend that you didn't say what you actually said. -

Yo man he's dead cut it out! -
In this day and age that speed may well play anyway if the Sox were creative enough to use him as a pinchrunner/D specialist.

Ah yes, the Chris Getz big board. Now it all makes sense. -

It's all part of the plan. -
I have never been able to figure out why the international strategy was what it was. Does Jerry have the aversion to negotiating with 13-14 year olds or does Marco?

I would be shocked if he hits enough to steal 26 at the major league level.

Except Colas. f*** that guy.

I mean would any of us be surprised if his arm fell off tomorrow? I think we are around a 4th or 5th standard deviation expectation for what he has given us so far as compared to his injury history. Call me what you like, but I am not sure I would be willing to bet on it continuing, let alone continuing for 4.5 more years.

Hopefully the unemployment line is around that corner. -
Which why the Sox called up Ramos instead of Sosa. Makes sense.

I mean he should be anyway, but that toilet was more proverbial than real.

Payroll falls hard after this year assuming Yoan and ILoy buyouts, they only have like $50 promised to 2025. They COULD do it. The other half is that covers years where we have about zero chance at contention, and is it worth it? Like I said before, it is a tough exercise to match the two camps based on their own interests.

If his buy out free agency price right now is about $25 million, that means the two arb years he'd be getting about $30 million for, once you subtract that year away from his two remaining years. I think Garrett probably takes it, but the Sox are losing a LOT of money in the next two years to do it, as we are probably talking of salaries adding to around $10-15 million if you went year to year in arb. Unless you think he is a $30 to $35 million pitcher right now on the open market that is a superfriendly player deal.
