SN: Sox Say No to Jim Thome
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 02:44 AM) You say this about EVERY former White Sox player. If Carlton Fisk came outta 17-year old retirement at age, what, 70, and joined the Twins you would say he's going to no doubt kick our ass. If nothing else, he would still kick Deion Sanders ass.

Financial News
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) This government intervention will linger for a decade? I find that nearly impossible to believe. In terms of the magnitude of its impact, every measurement says it was an order of magnitude smaller than the housing bubble itself. The effect of the housing bubble will linger for a decade, I'll buy that. Here's a way of looking at the government intervention: Not the intervention, the effects of the bubble.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) Yeah, what we really need to do is on one hand pass another $2.5 trillion in tax cuts and then on the other hand complain about the deficit some more. Or we could use the Simpsons as inspiration for terminology on tax increase...

Financial News
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) Everything in the last 4 months of the housing market needs to be considered in the light of the massive government intervention in the housing market. One way to interpret that is that Chicago saw a rush of buyers to take advantage of the tax credit, and that rush of buyers kept the housing market from falling as fast as it would have had the employment bust been able to affect it on its own. The end result of that might therefore be an expectation of a more severe price drop in that region due to unemployment once the government housing price support program ends. I would wait and see what prices do after April. I would expect us to at least see a temporary fall of at least the value of the tax credit. What will tell us everything is how they respond into the third and four quarter of 10.

Nice to see the Bulls on this run, especially after dropping the first two to horrible teams.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 08:02 AM) It still amazes me that people can on one hand scream about the deficit being awful (it's not, at least not right now) and then on the other hand oppose the strongest deficit reduction program proposed since the Clinton Tax Hike. So I take it this means you changed your minds on not increasing the deficit meaning the Great Depression?

New Roster Numbers
QUOTE (kev211 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) I disapprove of 23 and 25 being given away so quickly really nothing you can do though. I also think Hudson downgraded going from 54-41. So did Robin Ventura...

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:21 PM) Cole Armstrong has been added to the spring training NRI list. It means nothing but having an extra catcher.

Internet Warriors
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 02:11 AM) Okay, so I was reading the Thome thread and came across those Jim posts in there. Check this out, http://ow.ly/1nqapA this dude is dogging Soxtalk like in every post and challenging people. He also seems to have a pretty big issue with fathom, like stalker kind of issues. WTF did you do, fathom? So anyway, I think we need some Soxtalk internet warriors to launch a counter attack to defend the honor of Soxtalk. Who's interested? Why waste your time? Soxnet is now a national publication, and I don't see the need to turn into Joe Cowley every time someone gets upset.

The Jim Thome Saga Ends
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) According to Jon Heyman via twitter the Yankees are offering Johnny Damon a base salary of "$5M tops" and they "don't seem too optimistic". The $2M figure made no sense, this seems far more realistic. That makes a ton more sense.

The Jim Thome Saga Ends
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) Maybe this was answered before and I missed it, but for example we do sign Damon, do we just cut Jones? Because having one backup infielder in Vizquel just won't fly? Or do we go with 11 pitchers instead? We aren't signing Johnny Damon. If we sign anyone, it will be Thome. If not, I really am now believing this is the group we go to camp with.

Tim Tebow to appear in anti-abortion Super Bowl ad
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 02:20 PM) Apropos of nothing...if the names were taken off of these 3 replies, could you pick out the woman from the men? How about because I know someone personally who did exactly what is being referenced there?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:44 AM) What's with the Royals and creating position jam-ups? Last year it was 1B. This year its the outfield. They must not believe that many in that group are very good, and hoping that by brining in masses of mediocrity, that someone catches lightning in a bottle.

Tim Tebow to appear in anti-abortion Super Bowl ad
QUOTE (Soxy @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 12:03 PM) Ultimately that's what bothers me about this. It assumes that women make this choice so flippantly that a celebrity could change their mind. Of the women I've known to have an abortion all undertook it seriously, with great thought. This isn't something that people decide based on a commercial or celebrity. To me, it's offensive that people think most women would undergo an abortion without any serious consideration. There is a portion of the population that views abortion as more or less the last step in birth control. I don't know how significant it is, but it exists.

Who do you have the highest expectations for?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:29 AM) I think its more interesting to focus on players who are the biggest question marks - those who could be all over the board in terms of performance. How THEY do, is the key to the season. That list, for me, is: Rios Teahen Quentin (health, mostly) Jenks How those guys do, makes or breaks the season, in my mind. But the guy who's butt is most on the hot seat, especially if we do this absurd DH committee thing, is Ozzie. To me, the guys who have the most questions are the ones I have the lowest expectations from. I expect much more from guys like Peavy, Buehrle, Thornton and the like than someone like Rios or TCQ.

Official 2009-2010 NFL Thread
QUOTE (T R U @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 09:41 PM) Haha ok, so what evidence is there that the Saints are better than the Vikings? Its not stat wise, because the Vikings crushed them in that department tonight.. It took 5 turnovers for the Saints to win in overtime, gimme a break.. The final score is usually plenty of evidence of what team is better.

Failed terrorist attack in Detroit
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:28 AM) Yes you did. Great, now I'd love to see them take credit for the failure of health care instead of blaming a minority for it.

Failed terrorist attack in Detroit
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:20 AM) It really is an interesting look into the modern Conservative psychology how either all of the credit/blame goes 100% to the top or 0%, there's no possibility for gaining any understanding by actually evaluating the exact organizational relationships and having anything in-the-middle. The Conservative psychology huh? Did I miss the democrats taking credit for anything that has gone wrong in the last year? GMAFB.

Failed terrorist attack in Detroit
If it isn't him, then he isn't claiming it. But I will tell, you what. I want to make sure from now on that you never blame a parent company of anyone or anything that happens, which by the way is EXACTLY what you have been preaching about with your irrational fear of foreigners involved in campaigns nationally.

Major earthquake strikes Haiti
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:40 AM) Go back and read through the thread. You were the one who, repeatedly, kept bringing up comparisons with Katrina, until finally someone took the bait. You were the one who started with that stuff. You are talking in circles. That too. I was just responding to the stupid thought that some how the US government shouldn't be involved in Haiti.
