  1. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:28 AM) So short of committing our military to another operation, or committing another nation's military by proxy - and risking destabilization of the region in question, what other options are there besides economic sanctions (already in place, and not having the best effect) if there isn't some form of contact to try and hammer out a resolution? We either disdainfully ignore the problem, or we try to hash it out - in a multiparty system if possible, but face to face if necessary. I am told that is what the UN is supposed to be for. If not, we are pissing a lot of money away on nothing. Besides I feel giving the nuclear ability to a country like Iran is way more destabilizing than any military action could be. It's definitely not worse to Iran turning Israel into a glass parking lot after we negotiate with them, and they keep up their proud history of chasing a nuclear program anyway.
  2. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:28 AM) The Sox are paying Scott F'ing Linebrink 5 million a year. They are more than capable of giving a top 10 pick a 2 million dollar signing bonus, especially since the Sox have had an incredibly high success rate with top 10 picks and looking back at past drafts, top 10 picks actually have a solid track record of succeeding. At the very least they almost always give you good trade bait. At this point I actually hope the Sox suck the rest of the year and move up as high in the draft as possible. The Sox won't go out of slot in the first round, so that eliminates lots of picks. Therein lies the big problem.
  3. And FWIW I never said to ignore the problem. Don't put those words into my mouth. Please don't turn this into if you aren't for one extreme, you are for the other. There are still ways to try to make them stop without sitting down and negotiating our way into giving them something for holding the world hostage.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:19 AM) I note that you suggested zero alternatives other than turning up our noses and letting both happen. Honestly, if they didn't abandon the nuclear program, I am all for Israel blowing it up, and us making it happen.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:18 AM) Found this interesting and would welcome reactions. Let me put it this way. If you believe Obama's green shoots, this would be a good way for the banks to get healthy. If we ended up double dipping, it is going to get ugly.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) So we should just stand by, turn up our noses, and let both happen? Negotiations are not a reward. Negotiations are something 2 countries who have diverging interests undertake to try to find ways to agree to benefit both. We didn't reward the Soviets by negotiating with them. We didn't reward the Libyans by negotiating with them. Actually once we started negotiating we ended up rewarding both of them. You can throw NK into that same pile as well. There is no benefit to empowering people who want to commit genocide. I know you don't believe that, but I do.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) At least looking at where he was drafted, I'd say each of the last 2 drafts we've gotten very good value out of our first round pick given the spot that they were picked. You could argue that we've done that the last 3 also (you're not going to get 100% stars with mid to late 1st round picks.) I know that much, but you do have to get solid major leaguers at least. Maybe that has started to turn around, but there is pretty much a lost decade when it comes to our top picks.
  8. I will say this much, if Jenks calf was giving him problems before this injury, it explains a lot of why he got so bad in the second half. Its hard to drive on a bad calf. It makes your fastball loose zip, and your breaking stuff hang. Sound familiar?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 11:01 AM) I did say standing in the corner doing nothing right? I figured that counts. He has to stand to walk to the bench in whatever suit he has that night. That could have meant standing around on offense too, which was a staple of his offense on the rare occasions that he did play.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:57 AM) They've got to be safer than FEMA trailers. That doesn't make them safe to live in.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:58 AM) The "Being a d**che just because" foreign policy was tried for the last 8 years. Really didn't get us anywhere. Canada...etc., no one cares if they make a protest. We ought to encourage them to do so. Hell, more countries ought to do so. Just not the ones who actually need to do the heavy lifting; you undermine your own case if with that policy. Calling for the extinction of a race of people shouldn't get you an audience with the United States, and neither should a rogue nuclear program. That is the kind of thing that shouldn't be rewarded.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:53 AM) They're actually safe and quite cheap. They're built so that they can be stackable with a fair amount of cargo weight sitting on top of them (think about the way you see a container ship loaded with like 8 layers of them). It's a bit small...and we have a fair glut of housing already, but its a cute idea. They don't contain any funky chemicals that would be unsafe? I know they are super durable and strong, that is obvious because of their normal usage.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:05 AM) What team was Bradley on when he tried to run up to the press box to go after the Royals announcer? I believe that was Texas, so he wasnt exactly incident free like Everett was I think he was with KC actually.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:40 AM) You didn't like Mitchell? I don't know what to think of him yet. Honestly, I don't claim to be any kind of a draft expert, but its hard to argue with the production we have gotten out of the minor leagues, until very recently, especially out of our first round guys. As you move up into the Top 10, that is a lot of money to give away annually.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) The Bulls this season will go as far as Tyrus and Deng can take them. Salmons I expect to be solid but not great and to improve our defense in the backcourt. Rose should take a solid step forward at the least, hopefully adding to his jump shot game, getting to the line more, and no longer being a sieve on defense. Noah will hopefully keep improving on both O and D, hopefully such that he isn't getting outmuscled as much by guys in the post or on rebounds. That assumes he's hit the weight room this summer. Tyrus and Deng though...I really have no idea what to expect from them. If we get the Deng we should have had 2 years ago...the 20 PPG, 8 RPG guy with the solid outside shot who can also create by driving the lane on occasion, yay. If we get the Deng from last year who stood in the corner not doing much...well. And Tyrus...well...what more can be said. If we're back in the boat where our small lineup is our default lineup...uck. How does Salmons, Hinrich, Rose, Pargo, Deng sound to you as a lineup? Well that and Deng has to stay healthy enough to play 75 or so games.
  16. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 09:30 AM) LOL. Shut up dude. If I were to come to you and tell you I was gay you would be totally freaked out and shocked and feel betrayed and lied to and dirty and......turned on and stuff. Shocked wouldn't be the word I would use
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:45 AM) has there ever been this kind of "aww shucks, i'm dumb" type politician before? Jimmy Carter?
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) Would anyone consider living in a refurbished shipping container? The living room Kitchen-dining room Mini office Hidden wardrobe Bedroom from outside the home Roof Terrace There are supposed to be thousands of them just rusting on the west coast. Any idea if they are safe? I can't imagine they were designed to be lived in.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 09:34 AM) The precedent says otherwise though. There is some perception that this administration is anti-Israel but all they've done is some mild half-assed arm twisting on a far right Israeli government because they aren't really serious about the peace process. Other than that they follow the same protocols every other administration does. They seem to be set on "talking" to Iran. If there is any kind of a walkout, it pretty much cinches that it won't happen.
  20. Quote of the Day A market analyst is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday didn't happen today...
  21. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 09:28 AM) How do you figure that? The US boycotted the UN anti-racism forum for basically the same reason and a bunch of European countries walked out when Ahmadinejad started his usual anti-Semitic rants. Call it a hunch.

  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 09:26 AM) Seriously though why is she in Hong Kong criticizing health care reform? Why would Chinese investors give a flying f*** about domestic American politics? There is no transcript of her speech but she was apparently going on about death panels again and talking about big government. Really though... I mean at least make a half-assed effort to explain how it could affect China... I mean damn. She doesn't even pretend to understand macroeconomics. They are the ones who are going to finance Obama's health plan.
  24. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 09:22 AM) http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.htm...1#ixzz0RvymRqSs Wonder if they will be the only ones? Well the US won't join them, I'd bet on that.
  25. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 09:00 AM) Beckham/Danks were nice starts in the right direction. Gordo I can agree with, Danks was a fluke. He should have never fell that far.
