2016 Olympics
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 12:14 PM) I'm not sure why people want them here. The Olympics aren't a panacea for all that is wrong here. I can't believe many of the reasons people don't want them here. If I hear one more person complain about three weeks in 2016 that are going to be too busy, I am going to puke.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) This is true too - any mayor who replaces Daley would likely be just as corrupt, but probably not as effective. Harold Washington did a damned fine job in between the Daley dynasties.

Who would you rather see win the AL Central
With the Sox having six game left against the Tigers, they are going to have a very direct effect on the winner of the division race. Should we not care about the line ups and let Detroit cakewalk in? Should we stuff the line ups with starters to keep the integrity of the games? Should we not care and let whoever win? As for the poll question, who would you rather see win, the Twins or Tigers?

Fall of '09 television thread
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 07:35 AM) Flashforward was meh. Premise is good so I'll keep watching, but I kinda expected more from the premiere. Also, the Office is 2-2 this year. Hilarious last night. The part where he asked Oscar about the colonoscopy last night was LOL funny.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) I'm not sure what it would take for Daley to NOT get re-elected. A federal indictment? And it would have to be something big. You know the type of people that almost relected Ted Stevens after his conviction? The same mentality of people vote for King Richie the second here in Chicago. NSS hit in on the head. Laws be damned, he takes good care of us.- 2016 Olympics
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 08:01 AM) Exactly. Chicagoans have this odd cognitive dissonance thing going on about Daley, and I'll admit that includes me. We know the way he runs the city - people are getting palms greased left and right. Daley himself isn't directly aware of it, but design, but he knows its there. However, Daley is ALSO very, very good at finding a way to make the city work. He's been a substantial part of the renaissance the city has undergone since the 80's. So basically, yeah, we know that with Daley in office the city government is corrupt and that 10% of our taxes are just grease. But we're also willing to pay that 10%, and let Daley keep running things, because even in bad times like now, Chicago still works better than most cities*. * = Washington DC has some special advantages that allow certain aspects to run better, because its federally administered. Bulls***. Daley is a classic micromanager. He knows everything.- Who should the Sox trade for this winter?
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) I want Jesus Christ. He plays CF AND can hit a curveball. Plus he could be our closer, because no one saves like Jesus Christ!- 2016 Olympics
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 07:39 AM) I don't mean to hijack this, but it seems everyone here hates Daley and that is the prevalent mindset in Chicago. It's being thrown around as one of the reasons against having the Games in Chicago. So, that said, why doesnt he get voted out? In reality, what you hear on here isn't how the City sees Daley. He wins 80% of the vote in every election. He also crushes everyone in the primaries. Its not even close.- How Many In The US Share Your Name?
QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:35 PM) HowManyOfMe.com There are or fewer people with my name in the U.S.A. How many have your name? And like I always say, one DrunkBomber is too many!- It was only a matter of time
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) And no where in the Constitution did it say that the government could expand the states by purchasing a large tract of land for sale from France, but one Jefferson did just that. And it doesn't make any sense to preserve the individiual by giving the more room to be independent, does it- My surprise player to be dealt
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 11:49 PM) and Dye can't be traded if he is not on our team And even if they did resign him, he couldn't be traded until something like June 1st.- Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 06:06 PM) I wondered where Bartolo Colon was hiding... Nice... Glad to see Bartolo at least had the decency to hang around the delivery room, even if he hasn't delivered a fastball since the turn of the century...- The Finer Things In Life

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:49 PM) No, I've already given you basics and I suggest you learn to use a search engine if you wish for a detailed plan. You can find plenty of respected economists writings on the bailout which will give you a different perspective. I have given you enough to go off of. Sorry, no bailout on this one for you. You given the company line, nothing more. If you aren't even educated enough to explain another point of view, you don't deserve a bailout either. I know what other economists will say. I want to hear you get past the one liners and actually say something intelligent.- The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:38 PM) Yeah and their economy isn't doing so great either which is one of the reasons so many people were thinking he would lose. I actually wonder what the real numbers looked like if they weren't so obvious in how they rigged them. He isn't as unpopular in the rest of Iran as it seems from here. Inflation was the big domestic issue... imagine that. Most figures seem to come out at 55-45.- Financial News
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:44 PM) oh my. and yes, the entire system fails without 3 trillion! keep telling yourself that to justify this bulls***. Can you give something more than one-liners, or did Ron Paul not prepare you to be challenged at a fundamental level?- The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) Eh foreign policy study isn't really my business, that's more like a hobby. I think I already said that they used the Israel-Palestine conflict to play the card. Either that or forcing the self-fulfilling prophecy with "see, the world is against Iran." They don't buy that in the cities and such but that's not Ahmadinejad's base of support. The funny thing is that Achy was elected for his socialist stuff, such as redistrubution of oil money.- The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:12 PM) Who's saying Iran is innocent, I'm saying they are not insane and suicidal and trying to frame what they're doing in regular geopolitical terms. People just assume that because they're a Muslim country and they're state sponsors of terror that they're the same thing as al-Qaida. Not at all. I don't assume that about Jordan. They are just as Muslim as Iran. The difference is that I have yet to see the leader of Jordan on TV calling for the destruction of Israel, since about the 80's.- Financial News
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 09:11 PM) i really don't think so. there could have been a much smaller bailout and kept the banking operations from completely failing. if the side wings of the business go bust competition picks up the business. the funds should have been the bare minimum to secure the banking industry, period. billions in bonuses are not distractions, and you know this judging by your complaints of a 2 billion dollar cash for clunkers deal . but it's done and it's crap. i guess i'm just going to have to accept our bailout minded society. nobody is responsible for their own actions, large segments of the population wants the government to do everything for them; but i guess i'm going to have to accept it and stop posting in this thread. Yeah, cuz that's what I said. No one said the banking industry didn't cause its own mess. But at the sametime, if you think our society could function without a banking system, you might want to pull your head out of the sand and recognize that it hasn't been reality since, oh, about the crusades. I am still waiting for you to explain what exact "bare minimum" plan we all neglected to recognize, and how it would have not only stopped the failures based on assets going to zero, but it would have also kept some semblence of lending going.- The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) If what you were saying were true this would be documented and something that Iranians on the streets were aware of. It would also be a part of the Islamic Revolution values that they supported when they changed their government and not a secret policy objective. Ahmadinejad is an obnoxious anti-Semitic piece of s*** but this doesn't mean the Iranian government is going to sacrifice Iran to destroy Israel, and Palestine along with it. The destruction of Israel is the centerpiece of their public policy.- It was only a matter of time
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 24, 2009 -> 08:48 PM) I understand that. But to bastardize it and have the government take over damn near everything under the sun is not what the founders had in mind for our country. In fact, the concern was that the Constitution as written was too heavy, hence the bill of rights being introduced. The Federalist papers are a pretty good clue that they wanted to decentralize government as much as possible. I also understand that times change (hence the collection of income taxes as per constitutional amendment) but conservatives tend to want to go back to the constitution as intended, not a bastardization of utopia and huge "redistribution of wealth" schemes. The 14th amendment has been the most bastardized part of the constitution, and it's being interpreted no where near its intent. A common defense, a certain amount of regulation to not allow total anarchy, state rights to commerce and govern as they see fit - we are getting further and further away from this as more and more gets taken over by a more and more centralized government. Look no further than the Jeffersonian Utopian Farmer to get the idea of what the framers were going for. I know times have changed, but the big picture shouldn't need to. - 2016 Olympics
