The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:43 PM) You guys are killing me and this has turned into bulls*** quickly. I'm not going to re-post what I already said for anyone who couldn't be bothered to read it, but the point is that yes, he glossed over (actually omitted) the fact that his father was an atheist to make a larger point that he understood Islam. Nowhere in there did he say his father was a Muslim. If you're that hung up on that one sentence of a 16-page speech to the point where you disagree w/me that he was actually trying to say that, then I don't know what to tell you. I'm not even in the first argument. I am just pointing out that if he is really trying to connect to Islam through someone who deserted the faith, that is not very smart at all.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:37 PM) ??? That was like the absolute least relevant part (that his father was an atheist). That's why he didn't even bring it up and talked about his father's family instead. It doesn't matter really. Culturally that would be the most important part to a religion that tells us anyone who abandons Islam is supposed to die. If he is trying to connect with them through someone who deserted them, that would be the American equivalent of saying "Hey my great-great-great Grandfather used to own yours." Its a cultural taboo.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:35 PM) Somehow I doubt that all of Islam interprets the texts that way. It's the part that does that we need to marginalize. Its not easy to interpret this any other way really. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostasy_in_I...e_death_penalty

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) If we're just throwing out insults, let me join in. There doesn't need to be a Republican thread either, just a posting of Glenn Beck's nightly show. It won't be any different than usual to be honest. Its gone on for eight years, why would it change now that the Dems are in power. They still can't laugh at themselves, so it isn't going to change.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) In that part of his speech, he was talking about how he was familiar with the religion, how he's been exposed to their culture, and he understands what it means to be a Muslim etc. Yes, he was pointing out his father's religious background. Actually his father's family's religious background. That was the entire point of him bringing it up. Now, his father comes from a Muslim family, that's not really a secret, and then he later became an atheist. Nothing he said in that part of the speech contradicted anything he's previously said or changed his tone. It's quite obvious that some random talking head/blogger read that snippet and drew their own arbitrary conclusion to say "omg Obama is lying again lol." If that is actually what he meant, that is really bad. That is not going to help mend relations with Islam, because the worst possible thing you can do is desert the religion. That is a cause for death to his father.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:09 PM) Where did I claim I heard the speech? Talking about the talking point pundits. There doesn't even need to be a Democrat thread, just a link to the main liberal blogs.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) It's not like he actually heard the speech. Just going off of pundit talking points. Irony.

I believe the only proper thing would be to unCork him.

Chicago Slayer vs. Oakland Athletic 6/4 Thread-1:05pm-CSN
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 11:34 AM) So guys, in yesterdays softball game I ended up playing 2nd the last couple innings (odd feat given I'm a lefty). But I started two DP's and turned another (boy was that tough). So I've decided the Sox should call me up. My defensive play will be legendary. Kinda like the Legend of Wilson Betemit?

Gordon Beckham Called Up
So Jake Peavy got 2000 posts, and Beckham has less than 500? For shame. :0)

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 11:15 AM) They'll never be as bad as the Pirates as long as they have Mauer and Morneau. But I see where you're getting at. Realistically, if they don't start hitting on some of the deals soon, the team will fall to the bottom of the division. Once that happens attendence historically falls to near nothing. If they get to the point of drawing 15,000 a night like they did in the late 90's, they won't be able to afford one, or both, of those guys.

Dream come true for Whisler
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 11:10 AM) For those that watched him, how did he look. What was his velocity, etc? He looks amped up and nervous. He had trouble finding the zone, especially against the first couple hitters. Velo was 91-92 on the top end, but he had nice movement. Solid is how I would score it. We'll see more in his next outings.

2009 AL Central Thread
QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 05:40 AM) So the Twins traded Johan Santana, Matt Garza, and Jason Barlett for this: Delmon Young: .231/.272/.265 1 HR (barely got over the wall and BA would've had a chance at it,) 14 RBI's, 1 2B, 5 GIDP's, 41 K's in 117 at-bats Carlos Gomez: .217/.276/.302 0 HR, 4 RBI's, 4 SB, 3 CS, 26 K's in 106 at-bats The Twins could be a few years from a Pirates like existance if these are the types of trades they are pulling off. A big part of their success has been trading guys who were about to cost them large amounts of money, for guys that became cornerstones for the next five years. Their last few deal have been dismal, leaving them to depend entirely on their farms system and washed up bargain free agents. That is not a good formula for success.

Josh Fields' Swing
For the money Rolen makes, I am willing to see what Fields and Beckham do for at least month. If I am going to spend money, it will be a for a leadoff hitting CF or a stud SP.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 09:46 AM) Rangers Place Padilla On Waivers By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 3 at 2:43pm CST] Evan Grant of D Magazine reports that the Rangers have placed Vicente Padilla on outright waivers. The righty makes $12MM this year and the Rangers have the option of paying him the same amount in 2010 or buying him out for $1.75MM. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports also hears that Padilla has been put on outright waivers. Padilla's "history of moodiness and inconsistency" works against the Rangers, writes Rosenthal. Hitting Mark Teixeira twice last night can't have helped Padilla's reputation Wow. Nevermind. Its me who has no idea what he is talking about!

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:08 AM) I remember a big part of the hype around Prior is that he had "perfect mechanics". Funny how that changes after a career full of injuries. I distinctly remember the full page Tribune back page article, complete with color graphics on the topic.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 07:39 AM) Baseball Digest thinks we explore picking up Vincente Padilla. I disagree. That's a lot of money for a guy whose main talent is hitting AJ Pierzsynski. http://baseballdigest.com/featured/2009/th...une-test-drive/ LMAO!!! They really don't pay attention to the games, do they? Texas is in first place, and they are going to trade one of their starters? Really?
