The Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 11:52 AM) We aren't really calling Jim Cramer "respected" are we? Look at his ratings and tell me exactly how "respected" he is. Whether you like him or not, a LOT of people follow the guy and heed his advice. If you'd rather I could big up Warren Buffet's statement to his Berkshire shareholder instead.

Playboy: Santelli's "Tea Party" rant pre-planned?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 11:51 AM) The people who believe that the stockbrokers and the people who own the most stock are representative of the rest of the country. AKA the news media. Why do they matter? They just control the lions share of the nations workforce. If they think things are getting worse, what is the worst that could happen?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) Why is confidence important? Because without confidence you keep having highly respected people in the trading realm telling people not to invest anymore. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeff-poor/200...-darkest-moment And their response is that they aren't interested in what the stock market is telling them... http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9...;show_article=1

Official 2008-2009 NHL Thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) Campbell is a top 10 offensive defenseman in the game. The Hawks wanted to improve their powerplay. They have. Yes, a few years down the line this might become a pain in the ass... One thing we have not talked about around here is how well Cam Barker has played this year and especially of late. He almost seemed like a bust no more than a year ago, now he's one of the top young offensive D-men in the league. /jack In reality it would be easier to talk about who has regressed versus who has gotten better. I wondered about it at the time, but canning Savy, and hiring Q was an incredible move.

So where is Al Qaeda at?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 10:49 AM) Now, how would the logistics for such an attack work? Would a minor, down and dirty attack really be a deathblow? If not, does it help strategically? Not saying it wouldn't work or anything, just throwing out ideas. I'll be honest, I have no idea how logistics would work. None. My degree work was in economics, not "urban planning".

So where is Al Qaeda at?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 10:35 AM) Depends. How do you define death blow in this circumstance? Some kind of Mumbai-style guerrilla attack? It could be anyone of a million things, but I think the central theme that would be most effective would be something that centered around commerce. I could see a Mumbai style attack on shopping malls, or banks, or something being cheap, easy, and deadly effective.

So where is Al Qaeda at?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 10:18 AM) You know though, it's not that they're unaware or whatever, they're just not in the business of rushing plans. Wouldn't it makes sense to alter those plans a bit to try and strike a death blow while your enemy is prone?

So where is Al Qaeda at?
So in my warped little mind, I got to thinking last night. Where the heck is Al Qaeda right now? Bear with me. We are in the midst of a huge financial crisis. If I am OBL or anyone else, how incredible would it be to strike US soil with a terror attack right now? The confidence in the system is at a modern low right now. Striking with an attack would send the country into a panic by my logic. If I can figure that out, I know AQ can. My question is why the hell haven't they done something? Are they that far reduced? Are we getting that good at following them? Are they waiting for something bigger? What do you all think?

HD/DVR cable boxes
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 08:45 AM) Having worked for both, you CAN buy one, but then they've gotten to the point where you have to have the cable card anyway to get the channels. It's a racket. Can you get a cable card? Also if I have a regular box already, does that contain the cable card? Would I be able to take out that one and put it into a new one? Basically I am looking at it as they want $9 a month for an HD box, or $16 for an HD/DVR box. If I pay upfront, what I would pay in a year anyway, I want to just buy the damned thing, and not pay for it in perpetuity.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 09:21 AM) I agree with some of the individual points made in the article. I do think the system needs to work through some things naturally. However, the overall implication that Obama "is running out of people to blame", or the idea that we can now say for sure that some of these things are failures, are incorrect and way too early IMO. That's the funny thing about market mentality. Common sense can tell you one thing, but mob mentality ends up being right in the end. If the system doesn't believe, it is probably going to be a failure. The author is probably getting ahead of himself in already declaring failure, but I understand where he is going.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 3, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) I've heard a lot of people on this board, Republican and Democrat, tell us that the economy is cyclical, the President can't do much about it, Clinton wasn't responsible for the 90's heyday times, Bush wasn't responsible for the recession during his term, etc. So... which is it? Its both, because its not as narrow as you (and others) are making it out to be. Bush wasn't responsible for the first recession, as well as Obama isn't responsible for this one. Now the recovery is a different story, and this is exactly what the article is talking about. In general, the Presidents don't have a lot of effect on day to day economy. BUT when they go out of their way to craft a trillion dollar law that does fundamentally change the way business is done in the country then they do, by definition, have a very large effect on things. W passed a very large package which affected the economy. If he had stayed out of it and let the Federal Reserve do its thing, he wouldn't be a part of the solution or responsibility. Obama is doing the same thing today. What big action did Bill Clinton take that changed things? Its pretty easy to go back and apply individual looks at each situation and understand what the Presidents' did or didn't do to be, or not be, responsible for what happened under their respective watches.

Oakland Signs Cabrera
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 07:08 PM) In fact, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Add in the fact that your 52 year old starter apparently found the fountain of youth in Florida, and it seems even nicer. Ponce De Le Contreras?

Longer school year?
QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Correct me if I'm wrong, but what you are proposing is not the same as what the Education Chief mentioned in that article. What I do know is that teachers work their asses off (at least the one's I know do). My girlfriend basically spends 7:30 am to 4 pm each day at school, and even longer if there are meetings or tutoring. She also has to spend hours at home grading tests/quizzes/homework, getting report cards done, setting up meetings with parents, and various other things i never even thought of before i dated a teacher. And she puts in numerous hours on the weekend planning for the next week's lesson plans. She is truly exhausted by time the work week is over. It's not easy being a teacher, especially when kids do not want to learn. I'm sure some teachers have it easier, whether because they've been doing it longer or at a better school where kids actually do want to achieve good grades and strive to set themselves up for high school or college. She enjoys teaching, she loves it when students "get it" and it's great to see student's minds grow. But she busts her butt for 9 months of the year to achieve those things. She looks forward to her 3 months of rest. Taking that away would make her question if she would continue to be a teacher, because all the stress would kill her if it were year round. It wouldn't be "year round" in the sense that you would work a normal 9-5 schedule. The commonly talked about system is three months on, with one month off. The amount of days in the school year would actually not change.

Oakland Signs Cabrera
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 2, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) 33 first round picks + 10 type A sandwich picks + 5 type B sandwich picks + 11 picks ahead of Oakland = pick #60 overall as of now Don't hold me to it. 3 picks in the first 60 then? Excellent. Hopefully we save some money in the budget for some prospects.
