  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 24, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) Do you know why recounts automatically happen when it's this close? Because the #'s are usually off in the rush to report during the day. Recounts take a long time, and if our barometers are Florida or, I think Wash. State congressional recount, then Minnesota is a hell of a lot closer to Washington's then Florida's. Recounts are goign to suck for one side or the other, but these accusations of partisanship in the election board of minnesota is just projecting your political cynicism to every political event. Do you think Coleman was unpopular up there? My friends from Minnesota thought there was no way in Hell it was even close. It isn't as if there is no strong republican party in Minnesota either. You know those sample ballots balta provided us with? Nearly all were rejected as valid. Most people thought more of those ballots should go to Franken. Do you really think it is normal for partisian electoral officals to find 100 ballots in their car, all belonging to the same candidate, whom he happens to support? If you don't think things like that aren't going to make people cynical at what is going on there, you obviously are looking at this through partisian glasses.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 24, 2008 -> 07:26 AM) How many liberal blogs do you read? I'm not trying to snipe, honest question. You'd be surprised. I do like to read what people are talking about.

  6. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 06:54 PM) That's pretty awesome. While Tallon has made some mistakes, I can't give him crap for drafting Toews or Kane. Sharp is excellent as well. Not to mention the Kris Versteeg trade...
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 11:52 PM) If you only read this thread you'd think the Minnesota recount was disastrously handled. And if you read only the liberal blogs you'd think the Minnesota recount was handled fabulously.
  8. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) Well, I'm exaggerating it a tad bit but I still hear stuff like this a couple times a week. Bigger things like school shootings don't happen that often, but I'm always hearing about somebody shooting up the McDonald's in Seattle or like the Dallas Highway shooting. Hearing about it, is the key phrase. Stuff like this has happened forever, there just weren't 24 hour news networks to hang on every detail about.

  11. QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) The expression comes from the image of people sitting around a hot wood or coal burning stove in the old days, talking about baseball as they long for spring. No fair, you probably actually did sit around a hot stove
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 10:05 AM) I wonder if there is something being lost in translation, because I swear I have seen both INsulting and ASsulting as the charges. Yeah, this is from the AP http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...SCiqGwD957N8L86
  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 09:55 AM) http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081222/ts_nm/...aq_bush_shoes_2 Not so much. I don't think that's what SS was getting at, though. I wonder if there is something being lost in translation, because I swear I have seen both INsulting and ASsulting as the charges.
  14. I am having a 4 day weekend, and that might be the most interesting part.
  15. Hope its a good one, and you don't get gypped too much on your Christmas presents
  16. QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 08:15 AM) A good analogy would be a foreign President demanding a US citizen be jailed for flipping him off while he is here in the US. Imagine if the President of Turkey expected Turkish laws be followed in the US while he is here. Again, from what I am reading, where it happened, which is the point of the conversation, it is the equivalent of flipping someone off and not a jailable offense. Are you suggesting that US laws should be enforced around the world? It may be assault based on US laws. But this did not happen in the US. In Iraq insulting a foreign leader is a crime, and this is what he is being charged with.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) tax incentives to the consumer, as exist for hybrid and alt-energy vehicles, increase demand, which lowers prices. Tax incentives for the cars themselves to the manufacturer increase production (potentially), also decreasing prices (though here the relationship is fuzzier). I don't see how tax incentives as they relate to hard products (NOT services) would increase prices. They will decrease them. They actually push the demand curve out and keep prices higher because more people can demand the products. Its no coincidence that the products that are the most heavily subsidized by the government are the some of the most ridiculously expensive when it comes to the face values.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 07:52 AM) Its just like any new technology. Prices start high, the early adopters jump in, production increases, tax incentives might kick in for both sides, prices fall. Tax incentives do nothing to bring actual prices down. In fact they keep list prices artificially high. See things like health care and education.
  19. QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 07:34 AM) Bush was in a foreign country where their traditional insult is to throw a shoe. The shoe is clearly not meant to cause physical harm and you would not be imprisoned for doing that to a random person. If a visiting President was here, do the laws and customs of his country apply, or the US? If it wasn't meant to harm, why throw it? He could have held it up and made his point all of same, by pointing at the bottom of it and telling him what he was saying.
  20. QUOTE (juddling @ Dec 23, 2008 -> 05:41 AM) I don't watch Cramer but there are a couple of clips on Youtube that compare his rants from one week to the next and clearly shoe the contradictory nature of his statements. Heck...he might as well go start guessing the weather too. Out of curiousity, why wouldn't you believe that a stock's status could change dramatically in a week in these times?
  21. So I wonder what his equivilant would be when compared to major league players... for example who would be a B+ SS that would compare to Beckham so that we can get a idea of how he sees him...
  22. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Dec 22, 2008 -> 02:21 PM) I don't think that is necessarily true. If you look in a historical context, Democrats were very harsh towards the Soviet Union as well. JFK is a good example; he played hardball with the same veracity as Reagan towards the soviets. Reagan actually did a lot of negotiating with the Soviet Union, even though he did like to give big anti-communist speeches. Both of which I approve of Really they did more negotiating with him, than vice versa. His policy's really put them into a position of power because they were scared s***less at a few of his programs. They also were put at a huge disadvantage after Reagan cut their economic heart out by demolishing the prices of commodities that the USSR depended on for cash.
  23. This is the major league equivilant to the "When I was your age" speech from your grandpa. I keep waiting for someone to tell Nolan Ryan that it isn't the 70's anymore.
