Have You Ever Stolen From the Office Fridge?
No way. I had one office where someone got so mad about it, they spiked their food with something used to clean out people's systems before a medical procedure.

Obama and Rick Warren
This will be the interesting part about how much money Obama got, and how many people felt "connected" to him... He is going to have a lot more people take the slights personally when his policy doesn't work the way they thought it would.

Marquez 2009 Stats = Javy 2008?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 03:11 PM) This argument has played out here many times, on many other players. A player does well through the minors, then for whatever reason, reaches a certain level (AAA, AA) and has a bad season. This always prompts people to fall into one of two camps: --He reached a peak and just isn't going to be that good --He had a bad year (or an injury), and is likely to bounce back People in both camps are each right, some of the time. So brushing off either one is silly. Instead, here is the question - how do you determine which is the case, with an individual player? Also of note - this type of player is exactly the kind of talent that KW likes to pick up. The Carlos Quentin says "Sup b****es?"

The Economy, stupid
So they managed to settle the Jan contract at 33.87 in Crude, so if you had the $34,000 to take delivery, plus the warehouse space to hold 1000 barrells of crude oil for a month's time, you could have sold the Feb futures contract today for somewhere around $42.50. All told you would have made about an $8500 profit or about 33% in a months time on the trade.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) My issue with this statement is that the longer we go on after having passed TARP, the more the data comes out showing that not only was the "crisis" dramatically overstated (the consumer lending markets were no where near "frozen" as we were told), but on top of it, the TARP funds have been so badly wasted by the Treasury Dept. that it's hard to believe that if there had been a real crisis they would have made a difference. I don't think we are reading the same things because I still see problems lending money all over the place. I keep seeing companies and projects frozen because of lending problems.

$700 Billion Bailout
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) Like it or not this was the right thing to do. This one is arguably significantly more important of a step than the bailout of the banks. These two things aren't even in the same universe. Without the banks, the auto industry would have failed anyway. Heck it was the problems in the banking industry that really were the last straw for the US auto companies. I know that three million employee figure keeps getting thrown about, but if the banking industry collapsed, the three million autoworker related jobs would have been a very small part of the people thrown into unemployment.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) So what you're saying is, it's time to add energy companies to the TARP fund list? Well I guess since everyone wanted to tax them when they were up, the right thing to do would be to bail them out when they are down?

The Republican Thread
I found this pretty classy. You don't see this kind of respect shown very often in politics. Bush sure didn't see it when he got into office, that is for sure. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=08...;show_article=1

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) That's sort of what I was getting at - too much supply now, combined with no desire/ability to store, so we've been plummeting. So when we reach a certain point, where we are much closer to direct throughput of supply, the price is likely to bounce more severely. A hard bounce if you will. But as you say, with demand so low, that bounce may be pretty far off into the future. Its just that there may not be much flexibility to handle when the demand does increase. ETA: Regarding these traders saying it was oversold, that does seem different than what you are saying. Not sure why they see it that way, they know more than I do. As I understand it, from a technical/chartist standpoint, it is oversold. From an economist standpoint, this might be the beginning.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 11:00 AM) That's very interesting. I have to admit, I was well off on the oil bottom - I figured it would dip into the 50's, but stabilize in the 60's. Now its dipping into the 30's. That said, talking to some traders, this price level of oil seems way oversold. Maybe the storage issue you mention is part of that. If that's the case, I think you'd see an extra-steep spike in price soon, because there is less "cushion" in the supply now. Also, if some problem were to occur in the supply chain, it would have a much more immediate and severe effect, if there is a lot less oil being stored. Actually it sounds the opposite, there is WAY too much supply. This bottom might last a lot longer than I thought. A contango crude market really means there is a ton of extra supply. If demand is that low, the supply just gets pushed back further into the calendar until either the supply falls under demand enough to eat up the glut, or that demand starts to rebound enough to eat up the extra supply. Heck I read the other day about a supertanker floating off of some country holding 50 million gallons of oil because there was no where to sell it.

Iraqi "journalist" throws shoes at Bush
QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 19, 2008 -> 07:09 AM) Speaking of the Vatican. Pope John Paul II forgave his would be assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca, and was instrumental in having the Italian President pardon him and have him released from the Italian prison. Now he was immediatly transfered to Turkey for crimes he committed there, but I always thought it sent a great message about Catholicism and forgiveness. Imagine what a message it would be to the rest of the world if Bush spoke about freedom of speech, of being able to protest in a democracy. Except he has to be very careful to not undercut the legitimacy and independence of the Iraqi government.

The Economy, stupid
An interesting phenomenon has developed over the last week or so in the crude oil. It seems no one out there has the financing and/or money to store, crude oil. Because of this there is about a 7.00 per barrel difference between the Jan contract which expires today, and the Feb, which still goes another month. Apparently the 1000 barrels times the $35 per barrel price of the contract is too high for people to get financed, even though they could sell the next contract for $42 or about a 30% profit in a month. There is also a lack of available storage place left because crude demand has fallen so quickly, and people have stored so much of it waiting for demand and prices to come back up.

Which would you rather win?
QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) I was going to vote "hall of fame" but then decided to go with the most exclusive one (that I've heard of anyway), and that's the Heisman. Only 73 people have ever won that award compared to countless others for the nobel, pulitzer, hall of fame, etc. I went for the exclusivity. And something that wouldn't take years of research only to be followed up with using your winnings to do more research (e.g. Nobel). Though, on the flip side, it would be hard to argue with being able to say, "Yeah, I won the Nobel Prize for Medicine when I cured ____." Winning a Heisman pales in comparison to curing people of illness. If you want exclusivity, you want 50,000 posts on Soxtalk.

Rod Blagojevich officially facing federal corruption charges
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Dec 15, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) About as much correlation as John McCain being George W. Bush the Second. Real good point. Anyways, if you read that closely, you would see there was no accusation in there. It just really raises some red flags when you have the President saying one thing on camera, and then sneaking around to deliver something that should have been done face to face. It doesn't bother you that Obama is already lying to people after you were promised that things would be different, BS?
