There is nothing wrong with loading up the back of the roster with guys like this as insurance policies. It wasn't too long ago the Sox started a game with their 7th, 8th, and 9th OFs on the depth chart. We do still need 2 starting OFs. That has not changed.

I honestly think if we had reached out long before this off season, they could have extended him shorter and cheaper. I have no proof, and maybe the TLR stuff was the cause of his leaving, but it really seemed like there was a conversation a long time ago about him leaving. With Abreu I think if they had made a real effort to keep him, he would have stayed, and it wouldn't have needed to be 3/60 to do it.
