QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 09:22 AM) I've seen Rock and wite hint at it now, and the more I consider it, the more it makes sense... Even though the farm system has been drained yet again, its important to note that the team has actually been stockpiling good, young, cheap talent - but at the major league level. Quentin, Ramirez, Swisher, Richar, Floyd, Danks... add in home grown talent like Fields, Owens, some of the bullpen pieces like Logan, Wassermann... and the 2008 team is suddenly showing a lot of young talent. So even though they aren't farmhands, they are still going to likely help this ballclub for the next few years much the same way a strong talent at AAA or AA would, except sooner. And even O-Cab, who is older, is there to potentially protect a position (SS) that the farm system lacks any near-ready talent in. And that provides a nice side effect too. Think about this for a second. KW has basically turned his player development and scouting staff upside down in the past year - he is starting over. If those things result in positive change, it will take a few years, as they draft and develop better talent. So what does that system need to do that? Time. And these younger players who now will be a large chunk of the 25-man roster gives the team exactly that. Time to get the system up and running in its new model. ...and God said "Let there be light." Thank you NSS, for enlightening us all. People seem to think just because we aren't stockpiling prospects that we aren't getting younger and acquiring guys who will help us in the future. Quentin, Owens, Swisher, Fields, Richar, Lucy, Danks, Floyd, Ramirez, Logan, Wasserman, Jenks...these guys are all still young.

Yup, looks like a Fantasy trade alright.

White Sox Acquire Nick Swisher from Athletics

QUOTE(DonnyDevito @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:56 AM) you know nick swisher and buehrle are going to go together like peanut butter and jelly. just what our clubhouse needed... You've got to think that the clubhouse is going to be a lot looser and much funner this year. You've already got guys like Buehrle and Pierzynski, and now you add the Aaron Rowand-esque personality of Nick Swisher. And on top of that, I read that Fields and Quentin were good friends. And of course you got Papa Thome, the great story teller. If Ramirez makes the roster, then Contreras has got a new friend, and Bobby Jenks is a bit of a personality himself. -
QUOTE(JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 07:48 PM) What about Crede and Dye for Victorino and some Phillie pitching prospect. Outfield then of Quinten - Victorino - Swisher. Phillies get their 3B, and a pretty good RF in Dye. They just signed Jenkins...doubt they'd be interested.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 12:52 AM) I want to know what Figgins adds to this team that Swisher wouldnt be able to if say he was the lead off hitter. 1. Swisher 2. Ocab 3. Thome 4. Kong 5. Dye 6. Fields 7. Quentin 8. AJP 9 Richar Figgins give us more of a natural lead-off man, and I think it's obvious he gives us more speed. He'd also allow us to use Swisher's run producing ability closer to the middle of the lineup. -

OK, now with a bit of research, prospects (pitching) that are better than DLS: Hughes, Chamberlain, Cueto, Bailey, Kershaw, Carrasco, Morales, Price, Porcello, Volstad, Bucholz, both Millers, McGee, Gio, Elbert...? -
You're telling me none of Konerko, Dye, Thome, Swisher, or Fields will hit 30 HR's next year? Yeah.

QUOTE(Wanne @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 12:07 AM) I agree with that completely...he's building for a few years down the road as well. I guess there are a ton of variables to be considered with this trade. You have the side that states "Proven hitter > 3 prospects". To a degree...yes. But until Nick Swisher actually comes in and proves to be the star quality player some are making him out to be...he's merely a 27-yr old .260-.270 hitter. When he mashes 40 dingers per for a few consecutive years. I'll be ok with the trade. Hits somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 consistantly...I'll be ok with it. High OBP ever year...ok. BUT...he still hasn't done that and like a previous poster said...I think you get this trade done with some other pitcher besides DLS (Russell or Egbert). Don't get me wrong...I'm sure I'll love having Nick Swisher on this team. But in a few years...I don't want to see the second coming of Pedro Martinez in DLS pitching for someone else if he turns out to be that way (which he very well might). Kenny is building for the future as well as being competitive this year (not an easy thing in this division). Plus the ammo of PK, Thome, Dye for a midseason trade to a contender SHOULD bring back some minor league talent. I'm on the fence with this one. On one hand I like the trade. On the other side I hate it. I'm willing to bet a LOT that DLS doesn't even come close to Pedro Martinez.

A negative spin on a White Sox deal from someone from the Tribune? Unheard of!

QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 11:52 PM) I must have watched a different overtime than you did. Portland ran their whole offense though Jack. One play, where Jack drove in and found an open Lamarcus Aldridge. Clearly you must have watched a different OT. Maybe 2. There was no leadership involved, it was a designed play. Kirk can do that too. Not hard when you're playing the dumbest team in the league. Noc can't rotate, Wallace can't guard guys who can play outside, and Gordon can't get around a screen if it meant he'd get a max contract.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 11:34 PM) Jarrett Jack showed the leadership at point guard that Hinrich could only dream of. Should I get you a napkin to wipe yourself? Roy led the offense, give me a break.

If I could simultaneously punch Nocioni and Gordon, I'd do it in a f***ing instant. Those 2 morons cost us the f***ing game. I can't even express how pissed I am following this game. I screamed my lungs off in disgust following Gordon's 2nd blown OT game in 4 days. The guy is a f***ing meathead in the clutch. Just terrible. My blood pressure isn't very good right now. I'm literally shaking I'm so f***ing pissed.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) Ok just for the sake of discussion, who are 10 better prospects in baseball right now than DLS? And what about 10 better pitching prospects also? Just off the top of my head without looking, Bailey, Cueto, Chamberlain, Hughes, Buccholz... -

QUOTE(NCsoxfan @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 06:12 PM) Check out Swisher's girlfriend - Daniella Gamba.... I saw that earlier. As long as she shows up at the Cell, this deal is already worth it. -
Off-Season Goals: 1.) Get rid of the trash (Cintron, Gonzalez, Uribe, Erstad, Pods) - CHECK (sans re-signing Uribe) 2.) Upgrade at SS - CHECK 3.) Upgrade at CF - CHECK 4.) Get Lead-Off Man - ? 5.) Upgrade the Bullpen - CHECK 6.) Get younger - CHECK 7.) Solve Fields/Crede problem - ? Deal Crede/Konerko for Figgins/Santana/Spects and we've completed every off-season goal.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 05:30 PM) Go buckeyes!! So far in this thread: Cabrera is an avg to above avg defender The sox can't compete because their core is too old Dls and gio are future stars Our farm system is so bad that the team will be in last until 2012 Cle and det have already won the division. About right? Craziness. Step back from prospect love and check out what kw just did here. Our younger core, which should peak sometime in the next 4 years is set up cheaply and nicely with fields, quentin, swisher, owens, richar, danks, and floyd. Within that group you have possibly and entire outfield, a corner infielder, a middle infielder, and two sps. You also potentially just found you 3,4,5 hitters that will replace thome, kong and dye. They are all long term, and cheap players. Do you understand what that does for our future, and how much that negates the importance of several of our top spects now? We could potentially have sewn up 5 of the most expensive and important positions on the team, if not more, from these moves, and without paying a huge cost. Potentially its a brilliant move for our future and not for immediate success like some have wrongly mentioned. Just because you trade prospects, does not mean you are mortgaging your future. s***, look at what mortgaging jeremy reed and olivo has netted us consistently over these several years. You're logic and extended thoughts have no place on this message board. We must ask you to leave. -

Wawawewa! Just found out about the deal and I'm a fan. We gave up a lot, but when was the last time one of our pitching spects really panned out? Buehrle? Jenks doesn't really count. Swished gives us a bonafide slugger in his prime, and the fact that we have him under control until 2012 absolutely makes the deal worth it. He's going to be amazing in the Cell. Hurts to give up Gio and DLS, but DLS is still at least 2 seasons away, and Swisher is in/entering his prime. I haven't been giddy about a White Sox trade in a while. Now, if we could somehow swing a Crede/Konerko for Figgins/Santana/spect(s) deal, we'd be incredibly improved. CF - Figgins SS - Cabrera 1B - Swisher DH - Thome RF - Dye 3B - Fields LF - Quentin C - Pierzynski 2B - Richar SP - Buehrle SP - Vazquez SP - Contreras SP - Danks SP - Santana -

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 30, 2007 -> 01:03 AM) Just a few notes: 1. There are no bigger crybabies in the NFL than the Dungy-Manning Colts. 2. I know Marino didn't have a Superbowl win, but the comparison is still there. Better stats, less Super Bowl victories. 3. "Class organization that still wins all the time". Except in the playoffs. Besides, I reject any characterization of the Patriots as "classless". What Belichick is, whatever it is, is what I'd like to be. "Classless" isn't the word for it, and anybody with a decent familiarity of the man knows that. But he is a bristling contrarian and a perfectionist and a genius in his art. f*** if being a "nice guy" matters. 1. The Chargers say hi. 2. Marino and Manning are no longer linked. Manning got his Super Bowl, proving he could win the big game. And he broke/will break every career record as well. 3. See no. 2. They do win in the playoffs, I believe a Super Bowl ring means that. 4. Stop slurping Belichick already. It's f***ing annoying. You and I have talked about this enough. Belichick is a bum.
