Official 2011-2012 NFL Thread

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) I guess I just feel like the Bears haven't really lost anyone that they considered to be "their targets". I could be completely wrong but I think they have a good grasp on things right now and they want to let things play out a bit more before picking up the OL they want and what not. We shall see though, hopefully I'm not just being optimistic. They were definitely in on Sidney Rice. If they thought he was healthy enough, he was one of their top targets. And it seems as if Brad Smith is about to sign with the Bills also. AND Jason Babin just signed with the Eagles. AND Justin Durant signed with the Lions. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:27 AM) That means they could start him down there and they move him up if they needed him. Absolutely. I love that they brought in Emery. It's absolutely a perfect move. If you can get him on the cheap for a year as a backup, then let Salak get better down in Rockford. Why not?

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 01:24 PM) I personally believe that not spending stupid amounts of money on WRs like Sidney Rice is a wise move for starters Well, yeah. But at some point, you can't just sit back and let all your targets go elsewhere. I'm not really freaking out yet because I know these guys can't officially join the team until 8/4 anyway. -

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 01:20 PM) Well a good portion of the money they are under the cap HAS TO be spent by league rules. I'm aware, I just hope they spend it wisely. -

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 01:17 PM) People freaking out about the Bears free agency activity need to realize that there are still going to be a lot more players traded and cut and the Bears aren't making final offers to guys like Kreutz yet. If all is said and done and s*** looks the same then yes, f*** the Bears, but let the process play out. The problem is that this is what this front office is notorious for, outside of the 2010 spending spree. Frank Omiyale....really? -

Awesome. Bears open up free agency with a punter and a blocking TE. -
Hypothetically, the Sox could have moved Jackson/Thornton/+ for Rasmus, then turned around and dealt Quentin for Dominic Brown? Umm, Brown/Rasmus/Viciedo in the outfield for a decade.............

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:51 PM) How does thinking he's worth the Phillies top 2 or 3 prospects mean that we think he's underrated? People dismissing the rumor or being surprised that this is the kind of package we should get in return for him.
-
I never thought that after 2008, Quentin would actually be UNDERRATED by Soxtalk.

FWIW, here's what a Braves fan friend of mine had to say about Beachy: mediocre stuff at best, but very smart and with great control.... he usually is quite good because of that, though when he has an off day and the control isn't there he gets killed.... basically, awesome #4
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) Definitely worth a shot. I'd be surprised if he made the team since they gave Salak a 1 way deal to get him over here, but you never know. Emery is far from some bum. Salak is exempt from waivers. He could be sent to Rockford without any worries.
-
Wait, Rios + Thornton for Gamel + more minor leaguers? I'm hella down with that.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) Is he supposed to be good? His stats look awful in his limited playing time. He was supposed to be good. Top prospect for them a year or 2 ago. Consensus was pretty much that he was an elite 3B prospect in the bigs. Pending the price, I'd love this move if you buy low on someone with his talent. His AA and AAA numbers the past 2 years are pretty damn good.

What's the scoop on Stewart? Was he one of their top prospects? -

Wait....no f***ing way. 1, this deal actually happened? And 2, it's a 3 way where the White Sox DON'T get Rasmus??? -
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:53 AM) Holy s***, Jerry Meals just handed the game to the Braves with one of the all time worst calls by an umpire. Unreal. Lugo dead to rights at the plate is clearly tagged TWICE before finally stepping on the plate and is called safe, wow. I saw the reactions on twitter and I was looking forward to seeing the play. Then I saw it on ESPN and I was even shocked it was THAT bad. I'm still in awe. Like, I knew something awful was coming, and I was still surprised. The worst call I have ever seen in all of professional sports. Some stills: http://yfrog.com/khss0caj http://i.imgur.com/JiMyv.jpg

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:41 AM) Outside of Viciedo, I'm not concerned about losing anyone from our system. Well, Reed and Mitchell are 2 guys I'd like to hold on to as well. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:42 AM) Peavy was hurt in '08 and injured at the time of the trade. And then there's the contract. And there was part of me that always wondered about the Petco effect. Though I will admit I was excited about the trade at the time. Man if we could've gotten Haren instead. I thought he was better before the trade. He had an ankle injury, though. Contract, sure and Petco effect (as well as NL effect) is likely. But I don't think anyone foresaw multiple injuries and setbacks. -

I don't get why this hasn't been reported ANYWHERE else is it actually has some merit. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:19 AM) I'll give you Dunn, as most people would. But Peavy/Rios were big time risks. Both have failed miserably. Peavy much more so than Rios. We gave up nothing to get Rios. It was a total gamble and so far, it's been bad for 2 halves and good for 1. Peavy, on the other hand, I will admit to being a failure thus far. Then again, who would have predicted he tear apart his lat? It's not like he's had consistent shoulder or elbow injuries. -

The White Sox team ERA is 3.68. If I said that at the beginning of the season, you'd think we were one of the best teams in baseball with the potential offense we were going to trot out every day. Blaming KW is basically assuming he sits there before Opening Day and says to himself, "Ya, this is a $130 million team that can finish .500. Nice job, me." -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:11 AM) I thought the Sox would win the division. But to say the GM doesn't deserve blame because we as fans thought the team would be good is just wrong IMO. This is so incredibly hypocritical it boggles my mind. You obviously dislike KW for some reason. Just say it. Because there's no sensible reason for you to be saying any of this. You can't pretend you know so much as a fan and then turn around and say, "Well, I'm not a GM!" "Boy, I really liked what KW did with this team. Should be a hell of a ballclub." "Oh wait, the guys are underachieving and a lot of them are having the worst years of their careers. KW sucks!" -

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:10 AM) In this preseason poll, in which 65 soxtalkers voted, only 3 people thought the Sox would win less less than 88 games. Over 75% thought the team would win more than 90 games. 80% thought they would win the division and only 1 thought they would finish lower than second place. I know every poster did not vote, but it seems the consensus of soxtalk was that KW put a quality team together. Thank you. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 12:06 AM) He was 50 games of great (July and September) and 54 of low 700's OPS (June and August) that year. Then, he hit like crap last year. I'm not sure how anybody not trusting his bat going into this year is hindsight with how he hit last year in particular. Low 700's OPS for a young rookie IF still wasn't bad. And he was delivering XBH like it was his job. Good 09, poor 10. Not trusting his bat is fine, but saying you were certain of failure or something along those lines is absurd. .877 OPS in the 2nd half of 2010. Had great months in Jul and Aug. Again, come on.
