  1. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 07:54 AM) Remember: many people HERE (in the filibuster) wet dream every time this man puts out a film and heap the praises on him about what an excellent job he does about "focusing on today's issues"... just sayin'. Wet dreams aside, I'm one of those people. Go ahead and dismiss Moore and Swiftboat him all you want, he's become a Bogeyman rallying point for the radical right and he's obviously not going to change that no matter what he puts out. I was stunned to the point of speechlessness when I got the true story behind the origins of HMOs. To actually hear tape of Halderman and Nixon creaming over a sinister plan to get workling America to cough up more money for less health care is chilling and it was Moore who revealed those origins to a mass audience. It's highly instructive to see which sectors of American big business are trying hard to discredit Moore and his message because it's easier to smear him as a lefty nutjob than to actually respond to the issues he brings into focus. And they have convinced a lot of you to carry water for them. Health care has been important to Moore for more than a decade, and he literally saved a man's life when his TV show held a dying man's funeral on the front lawn of his insurance company to highlight the fact that a hardworking, insured American was dying needlessly because the health care bureaucracy deemed the treatment he needed to be elective and uncoverable by them. A TV stunt got the company to change its mind and cover the treatment and the man lived. Somehow I'm in the minority to think this is a good thing.
  2. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) Jim, While this wasn't directed at me, as usual, I will weigh in. For those that believe, there are no small passages in the Bible. The word of God does not have to be repeated a set number of times before it has value. I do agree that some people will cherry pick verses to fit their view of the world. We do that in all areas of our lives, from politics to religion. If there are no small passages in the Bible, how do you square the omission and or subordination of the Deuterocanonicals and the so-called Biblical Apocrypha (including Tobit, Judith, Esdras portions of Esthera nd Daniel, Ecclesiasticus, Wisdom, Baruch, Maccabees and others) from various versions of the Bible? QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) Next in this mix is the subject of witnessing, of bringing others to God. Each faith takes a different path with this, from those that will go door to door, to those with a more quiet approach. Of course, individuals take their own path as well. The most powerful example of that in my life was an incredible man I worked with who showed how much fun you could have and still look your Pastor in the eyes on Sunday. (Brian, thank you wherever you are, I miss you) So now we have people of faith who read the Bible and want to put their faith to work and bring others to Jesus. Some even believe they are commanded to do so. Some will quietly lead a life that encourages others to follow and still others will stand on a street corner and preach. I'm personally uncomfortable with street corner sermons and think they turn off more than they help. For others, they try for the easy sell. Taking two extremes, would be easier to tell you your life could be a little happier if you started going to Church, but your already a nice person and I'm certain God will accept you just the way you are, or tell someone they are going to Hell and need to change? Some opt for the going to hell route. And what are some of the quickest ways for a one way ticket on the long black train? Certainly homosexuality has become the new Communism. And people of faith are involved in many areas, and it's sad that a couple hot button topics steal all the press and form people's opinions. But each person gravitates to areas they are interested in. Human rights, abortion, capital punishment, living wage, health care, poverty, homosexuality, environment, immigration, etc. And every person will prioritize that list differently. Does God really care if Michael is homosexual? That is a question that I have not invested any time or effort to understand. I choose to be involved in different areas. My hunch is he cares that Michael is leading a good Christian life, including attending Church. I'm, obviously, less suited to discuss the living, practicing, heeding-the-calling, aspects of faith. But I think you're assessment is quite good.
  3. There are a lot of online places to buy textbooks for cheap, like half.com, valorebooks.com, bookbyte.com, etc. Personally, I keep my textbook costs down by thoroughly abusing the system and requesting preview copies from the publishers. telling them I'm considering adopting their text for use in a course. When they think it might lead to a sale of 10-20 copies, they are very quick to get a preview copy out to me. In truth, I have adopted a half-dozen different texts for various classes over the years, so I guess I'm not such a bad abuser of the system after all.
  4. I've always enjoyed sake, which despite often being referred to as "rice wine" actually has much more in common with beer (e.g., brewed from cereal ingredient and then fermented, not fermented from crushed, uncooked fruit). Despite my fondness for most of the sake I have tried and an admiration for the traditional production process (e.g, using managed cultures of Aspergillus oryzae mold to convert starch to fermentable sugar, analogous to the natural amylase activity in barley), I've only just begun to pick up on the nuances of the different sake styles. So far, my hands-down favorite style is Nigori – roughly filtered to unfiltered so that it remains clouded with suspended moromi (fermentation mash), and pretty much the way all sake was made for 2000 years until ultrafiltration and pasteurization became the norm. It's sweeter and more full bodied than other sakes, meant to be served chilled, with a creamy mouthfeel not unlike Guinness. It's a perfect accompaniment to spicy Thai food. The point of nigori is to preserves the brewery fresh flavor of the moromi, so if you like brewpub beer unfiltered right from the bright tanks you'll probably like this. Because nigori is more perishable compared to the filtered and pasteurized products, the freshest stuff is often American in origin rather than Japanese. AI've had products from Ozeki and Takara and they are both really good. Right now I'm drinking one from Gekkeikan that is from Japan and it has weathered the trip to the states well. Anyway, I thought I'd share the discovery and see if there was anybody else out there that has any other styles they recommend.
  5. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) Guess our camels are just a bit more friskier down here I suppose. They have to be so they can be ready to get some marsupial strange if the opportunity arises.

  8. QUOTE(juddling @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 05:32 PM) So what does the Camel smoke after sex??????? Canels, natch. No filters. Unless it's a candy-ass camel.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) microlacerations. wtf kind of board do you think you are posting at? Take those $$ words back to those PhD forums Actually we call them micheladas down here and they are quite tasty. I had to get past adding anything to beer. Then ice and beer. But either with lime juice or bloody mary mix, they are great. I also prefer Sol or Pacifico when I make them. Wikipedia tells me (and I, believe it because it's on the Internet and therefore must be true) that in order to be a michelada, it has to have worcester and or tabasco in it. I dunno.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) Budweiser even sells it pre canned with Clamato juice. It's targeted at the Mexican market out here. "Chelada" I believe it's called. I saw that when they introduced it. Ewww. Mostly because of the bad beer the recipe starts with. I'm not a fan of the tomato juice in beer thing, but I respect is as a regional variation on the theme. A traditional chelada can be good though and doesn't necessarily have the Clamato in it. The juice of one or two whole limes (depending on how much you like your limes) mixed with a Negro Modello or Dos Equis dark can be quite refreshing.
  11. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 12:01 PM) Has anyone ever lived in, or known anyone who lived in Hawaii? I'm trying to get an idea of exactly how expensive it is to live there from some real life experiences.....sorry, vacationing there doesn't count. Thx. I lived there for three years!! Unfortunately they were the first three years of my life and i have no actual recollection of it. I believe I will be of little help to you. If it helps though, I know we lived in a roach motel of an an apartment and my parents would literally count the slices of bologna in the packages at th store to try to get the package with an extra slice in it.

  13. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 10:58 AM) At this point if you are going to suck, at least get a superstar out of it. The last time we sucked like this we picked up Ventura, McDowell and Big Frank. That seemed to work out for us. Those were top ten picks. I hate the losing ways of the 2007 campaign and can't help but want them to win every time they play, but you make a good point in those three.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 01:17 PM) All headaches, drunk induced or not, can be fixed by 3 advil, drinking a ton of orange juice, and chicken tenders/nuggets. And no, don't ask me why that works, just do it because it does. And I have to agree with most of Heads posts last night, except I don't endorse the spelling and to say socks are better than bare foot on carpet is asinine. Great thread still though. The carpet thing depends on the fibers. If the fibers are natural than barefoot is great, but if they are synthetic it tends to give my feet lots of microlacerations and socks are the way to go.

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 12:25 PM) I may be one of a small minority, but I'm REALLY looking forward to August 31st....Halloween by Rob Zombie. He has been waiting and wanting to do a Halloween "Michael Myers revisited" type movie for a while. I've not missed a Halloween premeire at the theater since Halloween 4 all those years ago. My Mom (coolest ever) took me and my younger brother (he was 8 and I was 11) to see the first Halloween on the day it opened in 1978. If that wasn't cool enough, she let us stay home from school to do it, and we stayed and watched it twice! My mom actually blew off picking my dad up from the the train station that evening to watch Halloween a second time. :headbang

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) All I want to know is did anyone take Heads's financial advice? I'm glad I only saw the thread this morning or I'd have a trash can filled with Hanes socks and a fridge filled with hedge-fund mustard.
  18. PA, I think that last response to me was really well reasoned and put together, and i appreciate the time you took to do that. And I think you and i arrive at the same critical upshot in discussing theses passages, namely, even if David and Jonathan had a sexual relationship it is but a mere footnote to the story. And that's the point I hope to one day see extended well beyond this singular instance and to people in general. Sexual orientation and behavior is pretty much a footnote for all of us -- one small component of what makes us us. But so many people think it should be THE defining measure of a person's worth (not you, PA, and you know I've never sold you as short as your posts woud suggest). You're the ond who knows the scriptures and can weak the numbers, but if out of the million verses in the Bible, why do the seven or eight alluding to homosexuality take on such prominence and inform the marching orders of anti-gay Christian extremism (which I do not equate with mainstream Christianity)? I assume it's because it appears to be a divine justification for the fear and hate that exists in these peoples' hearts.

  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 11:47 AM) Yes. So naturally, I took the person's name and state, and plugged it into OpenSecrets to see if they'd been dumping money into either political party. And as far as I can tell, she hasn't been...and I'm sure this is totally unrelated to the fact that she was actually caught. Ah, I see what you are driving at. No payola = Caught suckling at the federal teat.
  21. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) As far as I can tell, the campaign contributions by the person facing indictment were essentially nil according to Opensecrets.org. Are we reading the same story about the $1 million shipping charges for 19-cent washers??
  22. Holee Moleee that's some expensive shipping!! The one surviving sister sure better be looking at some serious jail time.
  23. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) check the quote. I said nothing. I knew it was a typo and had to jump on it before it got fixed.
  24. I think the Jon and Dave story is as hit-you-over-the-head obvious as anything gets in the Bible. Admittedly, I'm reading from KJV where this stuff really, er. . . comes out. I read your explanation of an OT covenant. But whether or not a ritual sacrifice was involved, THE recurring love covenant was a marriage covenant. I don't see how you can say the getting naked part had nothing to do with that because of the proximity of the verses to each other. And there is already the admission that these two men loved each other. This is a gay marriage OT style. Samuel goes on to record more physical affection, kissing, between the two of them. And, to make sure that readers don't misconstrue this as merely a strong brotherly bond, the author doesn't say Jon and Dave loved each other in a way that surpasses other such fraternal male bonds. No, the author makes the purposeful point of comparing this love with love between a man and a woman, and says that this love surpasses it. Odd, indeed, if the point was to emphasize the fraternal aspects of the relationship.
  25. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 11:44 PM) These are lovers fighting their parents, they're best of friends defending each other to the death. You said it well.
