QUOTE(NUKE @ Jan 15, 2007 -> 05:26 PM) B..BBB.BBBB..BBut I thought some survey said servicemembers didn't have a problem with gay people!?!?! Maybe they do and thats why they shouldn't be there. Grown ups get over these problems and do their job. I thought we wanted grown ups in the military.

The show could have gone to Showtime.

Reichen Lehmkuhl served in the Air Force under Dont Ask Dont Tell. He wasn't asked and he never told... but people suspected anyway. So he was sexually assaulted somewhat regularly, he alleges. http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=2596273&page=1 I guess we should protect the poor straight soldiers from having to rape their gay colleagues? DADT doesn't protect anyone, and it doesn't matter if you're gay or not. Suspicion is enough to make your life hell, or even get you discharged. If you're sexually assaulted, there's no protection - because you get drummed out too. But hey, no social engineering necessary.

As more and more evidence shows that homosexuality isn't a choice for most homosexuals, having to hide it sounds more and more ridiculous. Saying that all Americans are equal and deserve to serve based on their merits rather than their sexuality isn't social engineering.

I'm just sayin.... I'd rather let the scammers who cost less get by, if we're gonna focus our energy on just gettin one group of scammers.

Seems more like a marketing ploy than anything else. FWIW, you can pay with dollars at any McDonalds or Burger King in Europe.

Reid said he supported a "surge" if it was part of a phased withdrawal of troops FWIW. And Kap, I don't think that the Bush administration has any secret carrots or sticks attached. We're there til we win (whatever that means), or until the next President sends them home.
-
Some people will take advantage of every loophole the government offers. I'd rather it would be the low income scammers rather than the high income ones myself....

I support increasing troop size. I support escalation. If its going to be a big enough escalation that it will make a difference. But the problem with this new proposal is that there's nothing new about this proposal. It's deadlines and benchmarks without reward or consequence for meeting them. It's doing exactly as little as possible to let this situation not get worse... but the plan is pretty lame. A "surge" is only really a surge if they come there at about the same time, but they're going to trickle in over months, not days or weeks. We're relying on Iraqi army cooperation which is something we've done before and didn't work. American troops under this plan will be fighting under Iraqi command - to help prop up a prime minister who is beholden to Muqtada al-Sadr, who is arguably one of the biggest stumbling blocks to sectarian peace in Iraq. There may be a military solution or victory here, but not without a political victory. The other concern is that this "new way forward" completely ignores every single recommendation of the Iraqi Survey Group and a whole host of other people that the President made a pretext of listening to.

You might like "Awake is the New Sleep" by Ben Lee too. Kinda that same vibe. I just bought a handful of CDs at Borders last night, including this downtempo compilation created by Air, that I'm exploring right now. Kind of interesting.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 12, 2007 -> 08:20 AM) I'll say it another way. Some people choose to continue to make only minumum wage and bounce around from one minimum wage job to another so that they can stay on the "handout" rolls. Could you show me some statistics on that? Exactly where are these people who do this? Otherwise, its just a lame straw man defense.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 12, 2007 -> 12:06 PM) Haven't you listened to a single word the President has said in the past 2 years? As long as we stay, we have not lost. The only defeat is pulling out. Only if he's trying to get Iraq pregnant.
-
Did anyone else notice that Bush's new plan has American soldiers fighting under Iraqi commanders?

Trent Reznor hated that it was done until he saw the video. Apparently, Trent refuses to listen to his own version now, only wanting to listen to the Johnny Cash version.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jan 11, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) Steroids are illegal. Eye surgery isn't. Steroids aren't illegal when prescribed by a doctor. Eye surgery performed by non doctors is. If Bonds got a prescription, t'aint illegal. And wasn't really against the rules either until recently. -
Escalation is exactly what it is. A surge implies a temporary thing.

I've worked close enough to the minimum wage in enough industries to know that this isn't necessarily the case Kap. Take radio, for example. When I was employed by one of the largest radio companies in the country, I was given full time hours at a part time wage. $6 an hour. After a year, I was given a full time opportunity at approximately $10 an hour. Three years later, my payscale was unchanged. The only thing that changed was my health insurance premiums were increased to give me a 5% paycut in my last year of employment. People who were working full time hours at a part time wage? $6 and hour - didn't matter how long you worked there. There are plenty of industries with limited local competition and competitive employment fields. These jobs, many of them white collar, pay surprisingly little. An increase in the minimum wage will force most, if not all low end salaries up IMHO.

The thing looks neat, but the way I see it. Phones are to be used as phones. I'll give it text messaging - but that's it!

What I love about Jack Bauer is that 24 hours can pass and he doesn't ever need to eat, drink, sleep, or go to the bathroom. This is what his sixth day in a row like that? Those mystical Satirs have nothing on him!

I agree completely WC Pitchers put crap on the ball all the time. It's technically cheating, but its funny how often it happens. Does that mean no more pitchers in the hall of fame? Here's the other thing to consider... he might have failed an amphetamine test but who's to say it was even involved with the sport. He might just have a drug addiction.
