  1. QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 24, 2006 -> 09:52 AM) More than a few things, number one, I believe we need someone who could unite the country, not further divide them. We need someone with Reagan's or (early version) Bill Clinton pr abilities. The biggest magic that happened with Reagan was making us feel better about our future and our ability to overcome adversity. We had the embarrassment of Nixon, the clumsiness of Ford in W.I.N., and the paralysis of Carter. Then Reagan comes riding in, literally, bigger than life and gives us back our swagger. With the terrorism threat, we need someone who can give us back our swagger. Hillary aint it. Tex, All I can say, is if you get a chance to see her speak live, take it. You might change your thinking a bit. Her demeanor and "swagger" has changed quite a bit in the last six years.
  2. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 10:12 PM) Quickly commenting on a few selections: - Hutchinson's death occured well after INXS had reached their peak commercially. I like the band, but don't believe they had much left in the tank around the mid-90's. -Syd Barrett died, what, last summer? Despite what the hardcore Pink Floyd fans would have you believe, early albums "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "Saucerful of Secrets" weren't very good. In content, both albums were more similar to the Yardbirds than the Pink Floyd we're all accustomed to. My vote would go to Ronnie Van Zant of Lynard Skynard. I believe they could have easily adapted to the 80's rock scene, considering the talent guitarists amongst the group. Actually, INXS had just released that Elegantly Wasted song which was very much a comeback/return for them and showed a lot more talent than Welcome to Wherever.... commercially they may have peaked, but creatively, they were headed somewhere interesting. You could say that Syd Barrett died in the early 1970s after his mental illness forced his retirement after two solo releases.
  3. I did that for two years in Michigan City at the News-Dispatch. It's a lot of fun. Til you have to watch high school wrestling for 16 hours and make 20 inches of copy mysteriously happen.
  4. Dumb question, was Sunday Bloody Sunday used during a program? Or as part of a commercial they paid for? If it was just in a promotional spot or as part of a tease during a broadcast, ESPN didn't need permission to use it. It just had to pay royalties to U2 for its use. However, if the song was used for a paid commercial. U2 would have had to give permission.
  5. Timmy Taylor. Hands down. Brainiac's Hissing Prigs in Static Couture was the future of Alternative music in 1997 and it died with him.
  6. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 23, 2006 -> 01:02 PM) as opposed to Lennon? War is over, that's about all I can remember John talking about. Perhaps it's in the way you approach things? Perhaps it's the time and place? either way, Bono and The Edge > Lennon and Mccartney as people and as musicians Go find the "Some Time In New York City" album PA. Working Class Hero, John Sinclair, Attica.... His political views very nearly got him deported. And it was more than just about the war.
  7. The same significance a poll holds that say 40% of people would never vote for Hillary for President in 2006. None.
  8. http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/20/poll.08/index.html CNN 2008 Presidential Poll Hillary Rodham Clinton 51% John McCain 43%
  9. And when she started in 2000 in NY, she had high negatives. A lot of people had "made up their mind" not to vote for her in that election. But - surprise, surprise.... she turned out to be a good candidate. She's kind of amazing to hear speak in person (saw her at an event for my Senator yesterday) and you get the impression that she gives a crap, which isn't what a lot of the Anti-Hillary crowd would expect. I also would say this too, the reason she doesn't have that problem this year is that she's been a great Senator for the state of New York and worked with areas that expected to be written off. There was a great article, I think in the Times a few months ago talking about how support for Clinton is so strong because she's been focused on being a Senator. Is she running for President in 08? Maybe. I'm still not certain that she is. Frankly, I hope she isn't. America could use a few more Senators who work for their states as well as Hillary. 40% of the people would say they won't vote for Hillary. I wonder how that's broken down by party affiliation.
  10. To Hillary's credit, they said the same things about her in 2000 too.
  11. A 51-49 Senate would most likely consist of Joe as a Democrat. Because his life would probably be very difficult in his home state if he didn't. Polls in CT are all over the place and I don't know if any of them are accurate. A lot of factors are in play here when it comes to actual election day. Will Republican voters vote for Joe or stay home? Will Lamont's labor walkers really work for Lamont? Will the state dem party help the turnout? Ultimately, it will come down to ground game... And there Lamont has an edge - he has an established party behind him and the support of most local party leaders to boot. Unless the GOP has a ground game in place in CT for Joe, Lieberman ought to be worried about November 7th, because that 17 point poll isn't realistic. I think Lamont is behind and has a better than average chance of losing, but its votes that matter and not polls in the end.
  12. Actually, this is most likely China telling them to cool it or they will honor the sanctions. Kim is walking a tightrope here. He needs the appearance of nuclear weapons to protect himself from what he views as outside aggression from states hostile to his regime (pretty much everyone but China - particularly Japan and the US) but at the same time, Kim can not forsake his entire foreign economy for the sake of this appearance of security. Although I don't expect his proliferation of technology to necessarily stop, it will slow because the consequences he faces are dire to his INTERNAL security. Kim's MO is brinksmanship. He dry humps the red line and when he realizes he can not take it any further, he pulls back. It's kind of the signature of pariah states. It's one of the reasons why what we say towards them can be very important. I think of all the countries involved in six party talks, China understands this best. It wasn't bothered by one nuclear test, it probably already knew that it wasn't going to be terribly successful. But multiple tests would mean a power that China would have to deal with in a different way and one that isn't too pleasing to China. China has the power and ability to stop North Korea and did so. But that's just my speculation.
  13. No but he was being interviewed in Ohio about the Maryland Senate Race. Maybe Steele found the right place to send him afterall. Transcript of an actual political ad running on urban radio in 10 states. http://www.nysun.com/article/41648?page_no=1
  14. Mike Tyson is campaigning for Michael Steele, the GOP Maryland Senate candidate. http://www.nbc4.com/politics/10103003/detail.html
  15. 1. Flint (FNT) for domestic travel. ORD for international. 2. DTW (Detroit) horrible international experience, EWR comes close. And GRU (Sao Paulo) comes close for no bar after security. 3. Delta 4. Vanguard Air (now extinct) 5. JFK-GRU - 10 hours on the plane, followed by 6 on a bus to Rio. Or, South Bend to NYC on Amtrak (24hrs) followed by JFK-AMS on flight (7hrs) followed by AMS - Berlin on train (5 hours) 6. Lufthansa Berlin-Frankfurt. Extremely bumpy ride, bomb scare at our gate before flight.
  16. John McCain on the possibility of the Democrats winning Congress. http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews....=rss&rpc=22
  17. Rumor is another Congressman gets accused tomorrow in the pages of the Washington Post.
  18. London's fun. Heathrow is not. Stansted neither.
  19. A State Senator from South Dakota has been accused of the same thing. http://www.keloland.com/News/NewsDetail6371.cfm?Id=0,51805 He's a Democrat, btw. And if it's true, I hope he's throttled out of office.
  20. Whoever has their hand there right now.... I'm giving you 30 minutes to stop!
  21. My fear was pretty mild until I was flying back from Brazil this summer. We hit a rough patch of air flying over the Venezuelan coast. Personally, I blame Chavez. Someone must have inadvertantly hit a button that reset the call lights for the flight attendants because as the turbulence woke me up, I saw the attendant call lights turn on and off synchronized three times in a row. I freaked out a bit.
  22. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 08:46 AM) As I said in an earlier post, I know that's what he meant, and I also know that he's smart enough to realize that anything can be taken the wrong way, and he said it anyway. That's my problem with it. It was a reaction to another joke. Something tells me there wasn't much thought to it at all.
