  1. The mining company wouldn't comment actually from what I've read about the story. And the news net headlines were "Report: Miners Alive" until the Governor "confirmed the rumor." When you have the Governor on the scene saying they're alive, and its corroborating my first report, I'm taking it as confirmed.
  2. I think it puts Peres in the catbird seat, I'd wager. My feeling is this - the Israeli public at large is looking for a moderation in political views. They want a solution to the situation with the Palestinians. And they want middle ground. Those that represent it, will get it. Likud has all sorts of ethics issues to deal with, I believe.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 06:26 PM) I'm not sure if this was implied by the word "Shepherded" or not, but Michaels actually worked incredibly hard to try to force Farley to clean himself up, suspensions, active interventions, etc. Farley was actually sober and clean coming off of SNL, but he really fell apart after "Beverly Hills Ninja" again. I'm just saying, if anyone can spot a problem - its this guy.
  4. I'm guessing if they could have done it, they would have already. Or it's not nearly as advanced as we think.
  5. But it was the headphones.
  6. Most people don't listen to their iPod at 120 dB all the time. He did with his headphones. Big difference.
  7. Israel attacking "nuclear" facilities will be a much more difficult task than in 1980 because the facilities are much more spread out, hidden better and protected naturally. If Iran does have a serious weapons program - and I think they do, but it's probably not as advanced as we may be alarmed over- its gonna be really hard to destroy because its so diffuse across the country.
  8. Sometimes you wonder if this is fated. Everytime it seems like we get close to real movement in peace there, someone gets incapacitated or dies.
  9. What I thought was great about this story was that Lorne Michaels told her she had a problem. When the guy that shepherded John Belushi and Chris Farley tells you that you have an issue, get thee to rehab fast!
  10. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:06 PM) MAD will not work in this scenario. The Russians didnt openly talk about the destruction of Washington. They didnt say they wanted Idaho wiped off the face of the earth. I am convinced that the minute Iran gets a workable weapon it detonates in some manner over some part of Israel. They absolutely did do that by the way and then some. They commonly used a logo of a red earth with a hammer and sickle all over it. We did the same too with Reagan calling the Soviet Union an "evil empire." Whether you agree or disagree with the points, our propaganda in the cold war was very similar, just perhaps not as blunt. But to look at Iran/Israel in a similar context as Cold War I or Cold War II would be a mistake because a fundamental shift in multinational relations have happened since the Cold Wars ended in the mid 1980s. Despite all the blustery language, Iran is more likely to use nuclear weaponry as a form of self defense rather than a form of aggression. If Iran fears invasion from a larger, hostile force - say the U.S. for example, having a nuclear weapon on the table makes the likelihood of invasion from that foreign force considerably less likely because they don't want to deal with the collateral damage that would occur from a nuclear attack.
  11. During the Clinton administration the left called Paul Krugman a conservative. During the Bush administration the right calls Paul Krugman a liberal. That either makes him a contrarian, or correct most of the time.
  12. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 08:41 AM) So did you win? Since Penn State won by less than 9. I won.
  13. But still one person DID survive. And that's something too.

She was Becky 2 and 4. Becky 1 came back for one season and was briefly Becky 3 too.
  15. Yet, I think that some people - and I don't mean on this board - are. I'm getting the impression that fake outrage is so often misdirecting the outrage that we should righteously feel towards people who genuinely do us wrong.

And I work late on Thursdays. s***!
  17. Your damn right. If there's outrage here, its more about how the miners got into the situation in the first place. Media coverage is a straw man here. 12 people died in a mine that had over 200 violations from federal guidelines in the last year and an injury rate four times the national average. And, just for the record, this is a non-union mine.
  18. And I thought this thread was about the fat guy at the gay bar last night.

I loved the first and second seasons a lot more than when I catch it now. I like Steve Carrell's version of "The Office" too but I always seem to just miss it.
  20. The dude's a Republican lobbyist and was part of the K Street project. There's really no other way to spin it. Spinning it is saying that his PAC gave a little money to Democratic candidates four years ago and using the "They All Do It" defense. I wouldn't be surprised if a Dem gets fingered. And if he or she does, nail their ass to the wall. I know that GOPers are going to get fingered. And their asses ought go right up alongside em. But the guy is a Republican lobbyist. Which meant he was peddling influence with the GOP, not the other way around.
  21. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 09:40 AM) And what did he do? He went and verified the information before releasing it. But he also could have told the families that they can't confirm that they're alive either. Saying nothing and letting them believe for three hours that 11 of these 12 people actually survived is really wrong as well. I was in a bar last night watching the events unfold on mute. CNN - to their credit: had video all over the place and was basically getting reaction and live video about what was going on. Their huge lower third headline said "Report: 12 Miners Found Alive." It wasn't until the Governor spoke and said that the 12 were alive did the "Report" part fall off the Chyron graphics. Generally, I think the media tends to be lazy and does their job poorly. Last night, I don't blame them. I don't really blame anyone. Live TV in a location is going to report the feelings around the area as it happens. That's why its Live TV. Anderson Cooper was anchoring from the vigil. He learned as the rest of the town learned. MediaBistro had an interesting take on it. For some reason, I find their TVNewser blog fascinating. Here's what they had to say. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/top_st...es_no_30313.asp
  22. I'd rather have Kinky Friedman.
  23. Heard on the radio, he said he's not interested.
  24. FWIW, the CEO knew 20 minutes after the first reports came out that 12 of the 13 people had died and didn't even tell the family for another 2+ hours.
