I'm going to start going to BP more. They have stated that they will not participate in any ANWR wildlife refuge oil projects in Alaska.

So I don't get it. Acting on something overheard is insider trading? Are we supposed to just blindly invest then?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 02:00 PM) I can't argue there. But in respect to national review board devoted to science & technology pertaining to incapacitated persons I think the chance of demise is minimal. Decisions involving medical science should not be localized. They should be nationalized & globalized. Absolutely, let's let the French treat you.

So you're denying that the Republicans played politics about this? Or are you just trying to hide that by pointing out that a reporter was potentially given bad information? And the proof is that he won't produce the document?

Damn that 100 dollar a day coffee table addiction. It ruined me.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 01:06 PM) If there is anything I have learned after being in this industry for 6 years, is there is no such thing as too much panic. Panic makes traders money. Simply put, panic is good. (sorry Gordon Gecko) But yeah, my magic numbers for crude are $57 and $50. It is in a pretty tight short term pattern right now, but if it breaks one of these numbers, it has a ways to go until it finds resistance. I was hoping they would continue the sell off today, that started yesterday, but no such luck. Am I actually holding my own with someone who works with this crap? How come I have no money then?

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 01:20 PM) That's only true if you don't like your job. I try to restrict my analysis to forethought rather than afterthought. If you've analyzed your situation extensively prior to your decision and have made what you think is the correct decision based on the given information, there's no need to second-guess yourself. Of course, that's a lot easier said than done. The good news is that people typically learn to deal with stress better as they get older, so this will likely be less of a problem for you in the future. Let me self edit then, there are 16 hours in every day that DOESN'T HAVE to be about your job. When I love my job, I'm all into it 24/7.

You're the one advocating a large bureaucracy and allowing standards for everyone to be set by a few. Community standards, are by definition, set by a community and not just one - or a handful - of people. Each state has a set of rights and responsibilities and our federal government is specifically limited in its power over our everyday lives, including our end of life decisions. I frankly do not see a problem with the system that Florida has in place. If no written living will exists, the decision lies with the person's guardian. If there is a dispute between other family members, it can be resolved through a state's judicial system. After all, it is by definition there to adjudicate disputes.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) For not knowing what you are talking about, you aren't too far off. You thought about a career in talk radio? It isn't the explosion that causes the uptick, its the people panicing after it. Its the same reason that when someone blows up a bomb that shuts down Iraqi oil, crude goes up $1. Its all psychogical. In reality, that crude was 3-4 months away from being gasoline, if that is exactly what that part of the refinery was doing. The only price it should affect would be something like september deliveries of specific energy futures. But in the real world people panic and drive prices up artifically. But I'm thinking that the market is already panicked out. When we hit 57 dollars, profit taking cycles started that are keeping oil between 53 and 55 dollars. The futures market already has the oil crunch effect in fully. It seems that the current sentiment that I see has more to do with future supply to be in decline and that we're at the top of the bell so to speak.

Don't make me pull out the link.

We are a federal system of states. Individual medical decisions in regards of "end of life" issues are best left to community standards and a smaller state bureaucracy.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 12:08 PM) And the wierd thing is that both spot crude and gasoline prices are moderately down today, even after the big losses they had yesterday Strange markets indeed. Not that strange. Refinery explosions won't affect the price of crude oil at all. It might actually push the price down a little bit because there is less infrastructure to refine the crude oil to begin with. Where the price jump will be is in wholesale unleaded gas futures. However, I'd expect a delay there because the gas inventory is fairly good atm, however - if the Texas City plant is shut down for weeks/months, the price of gas could see a rise (probably a few cents a gallon 5-10) as a result. (The following has no basis in fact as I'm only pretending to know of which I speak)

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 10:01 PM) Well you can argue another angle that would make her life more important than the money. If Michael is the cause of the initital injury (I agree it's a BIG IF) would he not fear Terri regaining consciousness? The question was posed to Bobby Schindler last night as to whether he will pursue a wrongful death suit? He seemed very open to that possibility. I think most of us would agree fear of the death penalty is going to be make the money seem insignificant. All of his actions up to the time he filed for her r-t-d would fit that picture. He was in total control of her life. What did he have to fear? He had used up most of the settlement $ up to that time. I'm not saying this is plausible. I'm just offering it as an explanation why the money might be insignificant. Now money earned after her death off book & movie rights is entirely different. Have you seen an MRI scan of Terri's brain? It's half fluid. She'll never remember anything. You're just grasping at straws now.

There's a great diary on dailykos about this. Say what you will about it being a flaming liberal blog, but this entry was particularly compelling. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/3/23/155051/329 Here's a highlight.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 06:14 PM) Yes, but its his attitude. Put it this way, my wifes dying. I'm sure we've had a talk. If she's a vegetable and had no choice, maybe you pull the plug. But you'd be sad about it and you wouldn't be interferring with the doctors who actually have had some hope that she would recover. As far as I'm concerned, if I have a shot at recovering I don't want the plug pulled on me, if I'm a vegetable for life, I'd probably say pull the plug. But this husband is a royal jag. He did everything possible to hinder her recovery, and was hoping she'd just die. I'd be damn sad and it would be a hard thing. I wouldn't just show up at the hospital going, Is She dead yet. I heard enough after hearing her nurse and some of her doctors talk. I think the other side of the story is that the prick husband did something to cause her condition. If these guy came off as sad saying he just didn't want to see her like this anymore with pain, etc I'd have a better feeling about it. But everything I hear is she has some semblance of where she is and smiles and kind of understands whats going on. Plus they think there is a shot she could recover. Not to mention the husband did all he could to interfere with the recovery. And just think, this is coming from me, the person who thought Scott Peterson should in no way be guilty based on evidence. For whatever reason I feel real strongly about this too. Still its awful that this is being handled in a public forum (the parents and husband fighting). You think that after 7 years of fighting to grant her her final wish, that he might have run out of sadness?

QUOTE(mreye @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) I took it as a joke. I thought it was funny because it's probably more on the true side. He makes it sound like everyone that watches CNN is in a death cult or something. It'd be funny if you said it probably, because you have a demonstrated sense of humor. Sadly, I doubt juggs is kidding.
-
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 05:02 PM) Not only that, but how many r-t-l supporters are likely to visit CNN to begin with? http://www.lawdepot.com/contracts/healthdi...ving_will_d&a=t So its not enough to demonize the husband, now you demonize a network viewership. Classy.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals again denied the Schindler's motion for an injunction.

The political elite are conservatives last time I checked. Or are you still living in 1993?
-
That's right. Rather than admit you're wrong, demonize the guy.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2005 -> 08:46 AM) When Manchester College made the Division 3 Final Four in basketball, it was in Buffalo NY. And you are right, Buffalo reminded me of a big Detroit. I also was through there on the way to Niagra. Lets just say Buffalo isn't on my return visits list. Buffalo would be by definition a "little" Detroit. However, I would definitely say that the home of the Bills is head and shoulders above Flint, Michigan, Gary, Indiana and Newark, New Jersey.
