  1. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) So, I should throw Bush and his Republican cohorts out of offce and watch while the Democrats do nothing, paralyzed by fear that their leftist constituents will label them "racist"? That's what happened in the early/mid '90s when Clinton was in office and the Dems controlled Congress. Obviously, neither party has done anything about this (albeit for different reasons), yet you place all of the blame on the right. How typical. :rolly You're complaining about a problem that your party refuses to fix. Instead of saying "Oh, good point." or disagreeing for a vaild reason, you just point a finger and bleat out "Clinton." Its simply amazing how people who can have control of the government for so long can still feel like a victim.
  2. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:24 AM) I'll bet Clinton paid all his hotel bills in cash keeps the little lady from catching him when the credit card bills come in. As long as he didn't stay at the Sybaris, I think he'd be fine.
  3. I would be surprised if the President doesn't go.
  4. I think if Clinton or Bush Sr. wanted to go, they probably could, but would not be travelling with the government delegation.
  5. Given that I own five different versions of Candide, I'd agree. I actually wrote a paper on it in college, but I didn't have a translation, just my copy in the original french. So I quoted it in the original French. I think my teacher looked at it, shook her head and just gave me an A for effort.
  6. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:15 AM) OK, Shagar, I've been patiently waiting for a grade from you on my 'Kafka's soldier as Everyman' allegory, but to no avail. C'mon, man – you're as slow at getting grades back to your students as I am!! Well, ok then if that's the way you're going to be. Just don't come asking for help when you need to do that report on Albert Camus' The Stranger. That was one of my favorite books in High School. 20th Century French Lit is about all of the French lit that I can stand. Camus, Sartre and St Exupery. Hats off, gentlemen!
  7. Absolutely. First rule of radio advertising. Especially since they pay super low rates.

  9. They are now talking about postponing the wedding according to NPR this morning.
  10. QUOTE(Goldmember @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:25 PM) he was doing good most of race too. damn you jimmie johnson! :fyou When he first started, I thought that was the ex-Cowboys coach, cause he started not long after the coach finished.
  11. How sad is it that suspending someone for steroids is considered a victory for the sport?
  12. QUOTE(The Bones @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 01:41 AM) I picked up Beck's new album, Guero, this weekend. Gotta love the new single E-Pro and it's sampling of So What'Cha Want. It's a pretty solid album overall, a lot more upbeat than Sea Change although that was good in its own way. I've read a mixed review or two on it, I think mostly because it's kind of retrospectivish according to the people I've read about it. I have yet to hear it though... when I get my internet back tomorrow I plan on illegally downloading... err purchasing this album and listening to it. I don't know why, but the song "Good Night Good Night" by Hot Hot Heat is stuck in my mind lately.

    I need a book...

I just read and wholeheartedly recommend: "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time." Mark Haddon - autistic kid tries to figure out who killed his neighbor's dog. "In A Sunburned Country" Bill Bryson - Funny travel narrative about Australia. "The Bookseller of Kabul" Asne Seierstad - Norwegian Journalist writes about the common life of an uncommon family in Afghanistan. Brutally funny at times, heartbreaking at others.
  14. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:29 AM) That's an interesting comment coming from someone who spends so much time here defending the rights of Mexicans. What about all of the Iraqis that Saddam slaughtered over the years? What about the Kurds and Shiites that he gassed? What about all of the people who were arrested, tortured, and murdered by Saddam's secret police? What about all of the brutality and murders committed by his sons? Are you suggesting that American lives are worth more than Iraqi lives? Surely you don't believe that they're "just brown people" who don't have the same right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that we do? If American lives aren't worth more than other people's lives in the eyes of our government, why aren't we sending folks to liberate Iran, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, DR Congo, Sudan, North Korea, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco, Algeria, Cuba, et al?
  15. I'm still pissed that King Kauffman picked us fourth. I can see second, maybe even third... but fourth?
  16. QUOTE(El Piervizdyeguchansodnik @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 07:13 PM) Good news that he'll fully recover. Neil Young and Rush: The only good things to ever come out of Canada. You forgot Shania!
  17. QUOTE(whitesoxin' @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 10:03 PM) I was there for a visit Friday. It was a really neat campus. I really liked it a lot, but that could be because it was the first college I've visited with interest for myself. (I have tagged along on a few trips with my sisters.) The people there seemed really cool and the sports teams are moving to the Big East next year so that is a positive. It is close to the Bradley Center and Miller Park and is pretty much right in downtown Milwaukee. Plus, I am Catholic so I would fit right in. I hope you have a good time when you're there. I thought you meant Lake State for a bit.
  18. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) Perhaps not, but the regime change probably saved the lives of many of Iraqis, not to mention allowing them to live in the absence of terror. I'm not an "ends justify the means" type of person, but Saddam in prison is a better alternative than Saddam in power under the UN's corrupt and ineffective Oil-For-Food program. You're acting like OFP kept Saddam Hussein in power. It didn't.
  19. QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 1, 2005 -> 09:10 AM) Despite the apparent flaws in our intelligence, the world is a much better place with Saddam behind bars and his sons out of the picture. Nobody deserves to live under a regime of terror like that. This doesn't excuse the misinformation that was going on in our own government that led to our invasion of Iraq.
  20. If it wasn't for college protests, the "oddly enough" section would be cut in half.
  21. Thread title changed because the Pope has not yet passed away.

    The Pope...

There's talk of a South American or African pope. Most likely the newest pope will be chosen from one of the regions where Catholicism is still burgeoning and growing. And, most likely, one who is a bit more moderate than JPII was as well in some respects. As the pendulum swung wildly one way with Vatican II, it swung back with JPII. Most likely the college of Cardinals will try to select someone back in the middle.
