  1. Thanks, I stole it from Salon.com. They were posting a thing that Bill Maher said that since Bush keeps whining about Kerry hurting people's feelings, that Bush is just a big girl.
  2. If you wanna talk about endorsements, John Kerry has gotten nearly twice as many as Bush. Even papers who endorsed Bush in 2000 are swinging around to Kerry, or as in the case of the Tampa Tribune and in Winston-Salem, NC endorsing noone.
  3. I've seen five polls today. One shows Kerry up by 3, two show the race within two points, one shows a four point lead for Bush and the Gallup poll shows 8 points for Bush (although weighted for Likely Voters) I don't know who will win. I will say this. This all comes down to Ohio. There are signs that Bush is giving up PA (no more scheduled events in the state for the main candidates). If Kerry can win NH, hold WI, IA and MN and take Ohio OR Florida, the Kerry will win.
  4. My Prague story is so much cooler when it stops there.... so it does. Did I ever tell you about the time I was in Berlin and I got hit on by the guy that looked like my grandfather and stank of buttermilk?
  5. Yes because losing half her wealth and spending 5 months doing laundry for 1,000 + women in a prison for 20 cents an hour isn't punishment enough for somebody who got convicted of illegally selling about 1,000 shares of stock. They can't find 20 billion dollars of Iraqi oil revenue during the CPA administration. Who's going to jail over that? Hell, who's even getting fired over that? Seems like nobody's got perspective anymore.
  6. I never said anything about gay. I mean, really, how gay is that? John Kerry pandered to nobody by saying what he did. He doesn't support the idea of gay marriage but he supports the idea of extending survivor rights and hospital visitation rights to people of long term relationships. He voted against DOMA because he thought it was unnecessary. He thought it was "gaybashing." There's nothing wishy-washy about that. He doesn't support the FMA. John Edwards doesn't support the FMA either. There were a few moments in that final debate that I thought were very telling. John Kerry answered clearly where he stood on gay marriage. He doesn't support marriage but he supports the extension of certain rights to gay couples. He doesn't believe homosexuality is a choice. George Bush rambled for a while about something that didn't answer the question and then said he supported the effort to amend the constitution and forever alter the rights of 3 to 10 percent of this population. I could get into the details of why the FMA would be bad for this country beyond the realm of marriage itself, but I won't today. If we eliminated the income tax and replaced it with a National Sales Tax, do you realize how damaging that would be to small business owners? Or, for that matter, corporations? They'd then be taxed twice on everything. How is that a pro-business stance. The Republican party has increased discretionary spending per year in the US government at a higher rate over the past ten years then the Democrats did during their time in control of Congress. Your boy, Reagan proposed tax hikes, and blew up a huge deficit. He grew the government to the point where we had to establish Pay as you Go because we couldn't afford to not balance the budget any longer. If Homeland Security is something we "need" why isn't it adequately funded? For the price of doing business in Iraq with Halliburton for four months, we could make the border protection enhancements we need to make our ports and airports more secure. But we don't. As for you scorning the advancements of the 20th century so much, why don't you throw away your computer and CD player and go join the Amish. You're in PA, they shouldn't be hard to find.
  7. There will be no fine and no sanction placed against Sinclair. Apparently chairman Michael Powell doesn't share comissioner Michael Copps' view that this is an unacceptable act. The FCC has forgotten as of late that the public trust means more than the occasional stripper appearance or a boob at the SuperBowl. In the mean time, EAS isn't working. Not at a lot of stations. Where's the big push to fix that too? The FCC alone is a reason not to re-elect this president. The people that the President have chosen to run this commission have failed to be a good steward of the people's airwaves. Sadly, the Clinton administration failed at this as well.
  8. I read the transcript. Seems like Tucker took a lot more offense than the folk on the left. Can anyone tell me if that seemed true? Or was everyone just pissed off.
  9. History. Most parties lose seats in Congress when the President is that party. A democrat president would most likely lead to four more years of Republican congressional control.
  10. Well, I agree. I take nothing I hear without a grain of salt. But unfortunately, not everyone is as sophisticated with the media as you or I. That being said, I want you to realize - there is a big difference between a TV station and a public library. Everyone in Columbus knows about Channel 6 (one of the Sinclair stations and an ABC affiliate.) Oftentimes, the people voting in the library are using the library for the first time since the last presidential election. They don't know what happens there and they don't care. Channel 6 in Columbus is bound by rules of equal time for free in-kind political contributions like a 90 minute Anti Kerry piece. A library is not. Whether it should be or not is up to you. And if it should be, push for that legislation - but stop whining about it. I called Sinclair. I emailed the FCC, what have you done about your issue?
  11. Of course they would. But here's some reality for you. The best case scenario the Democrats could have is a 51-49 majority in the Senate and a Kerry-Edwards presidency. This would leave a Republican House and a divided government. So if you think divided government works best - you shouldn't vote for the incumbent this time around. Pure and simple.
  12. Actually, the gas tax I'm talking about was proposed by Cheney in 1986. (Energy Security Policy Act of 1986, H.R.5667, introduced 10/9/86, 99th Congress 2nd Session, 132 Cong Rec E 1350, Vol. 132, No. 139; Inside Energy/with Federal Lands, 10/13/86) This would have levied a hefty import tax on oil. You can still fight a war on terrorism and be humble, Nuke. We did that in World War II. We were attacked then. We were humble enough in the early sixties to enjoy the support of many of our now estranged allies during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I would argue the real year that India and Pakistan were on the brink of Nuclear war was 1998. Since then, I haven't been worried because they have created a MAD regime similar to what we had with the Soviet Union during Cold War II. Tensions elevate but would not likely spiral out of control. I recall both Musharraf and Vajpaye (spelling) being quick to say that nuclear discharge was not a realistic option. Libya had been trying to get back into international good graces since 1998. A long negotiated surrender for a long idle and half hearted weapons program just happened to have happened shortly after the Iraq invasion. Libya may have disarmed but Iran and North Korea have quickened the pace in becoming Nuclear. Because having that bomb makes it hard for us to step in and take control. Being humble means doing the things we promised we'd do before going into war, rather than using any excuse six weeks into something and say that it is simply not going to happen. The weapons inspectors were in Iraq less than two months before Bush declared it a failure, despite the fact that the inspectors were the only ones who actually found anything illegal - Al Samoud missiles. We found nothing. Being humble doesn't mean being meek NUKE. Being humble means living up to our word within the international community. If we go back on our word, why should anyone else trust us? On the five million new jobs. The Bush economic team predicted that in February of 2002. After the recession. After 9/11. After any possible excuse. In January of this year, the Bush economic team predicted 2.6 million jobs for 2004. They will fall well short of that as well.
  13. The Communications act of 1936 (I think, don't hold me to the year) is the difference. Should that library show something pro-Bush? Sure. But what other film that's pro-Bush has had the same impact?
  14. So if the Congress won't change, which it most likely won't. Why would you vote for a President who will continue to bankrupt the system. Why not, instead, vote for a divided government - which tends to be more fiscally conservative.
  15. Wrong. The airwaves with which TV stations operate are owned by the government. The TV stations own licenses which state that they will protect the public trust with. Libraries make no such promise.
  16. Palehosefan: Here's a little history for you. For the last ten years, the House of Representatives, the body which primarily deals with the budget has been REPUBLICAN controlled. For 8 1/2 years of the last ten years, the Senate has been REPUBLICAN controlled. John Kerry is a DEMOCRAT. Who hand picks the bills for Bush to sign? That's not John Kerry. That's Tom DeLay, that's Dennis Hastert, that's Bill Frist, that's Dick Cheney. That's not John Kerry.
  17. Let's extend this logic. Because its ridiculous. So does that mean that if there's a pro-firefighter initiative on the ballot, you can't use a firehouse for a polling place? After all, they'd just be fighting fires the week before and therefore influencing the electorate. What if there's a millage issue for the library system? Would the library be an appropriate polling place? After all, they'd just be giving out books the week before and therefore influencing the electorate.
  18. What can I tell you Sox4life? Other than you just aren't funny anymore. You're just angry. And I can understand - you keep trying to justify your political beliefs and when you are called on them, you get angry. Remember that commercial about the 50 cent gas tax proposal that John Kerry supported? Dick Cheney proposed that tax hike. Remember that 9/11 commission, George Bush opposed it. George Bush tried to sandbag it. George Bush didn't want to talk to it. Remember Department of Homeland Security? George Bush opposed it. It's underfunded and by government reviews, its been described as incredibly lacking. John Kerry promised he wouldn't raise taxes. I'm willing to give him a chance. George Bush promised a humble foreign policy. George Bush promised to allow the import of prescription drugs from Canada. George Bush promised better funding for first responders that was never realized. George Bush promised 5 million new jobs by Nov 2004 in 2002. That never materialized. I got enough broken promises to change horses in midstream thank you very much. As a result of the Bush tax cuts and recession, public university costs have exploded, in the last 4 years, Michigan State alone raised its rates by more than 15%. States have had to raise taxes to make up for mandates that now go unfunded. If your federal tax goes down but your state tax increases, how does this help me?
  19. Here's the problem, where has Bush actually delivered on Spending Restraint?
  20. L.A. Times column, George Bush, Tax Hiker. My favorite quote.
  21. CNN never tells the truth, remember?
  22. Yes, libraries should not be allowed to portray any kind of controversial viewing. This kind of public education is damaging to the Republic and must be stopped. It isn't like people are going to be forced to watch Fahrenheit 9/11 in the polling place while casting their ballot. Does this mean any banned book display should be taken down too? There's a big difference between a community center and a TV station.
  23. If people here are so concerned with runaway federal government spending, why wouldn't you vote for Kerry? With a Democratic president and a Republican congress, how is any major reform going to pass anyway? If anything, this would be the surest way to maintain fiscal responsibility. Dems plans get shot down in committee. Republican pork gets vetoed. Talk about Kerry's plans, let's talk about Bush's reality. He has vetoed 0 spending bills in the 3+ years he's had the opportunity to. Including a ridiculous multi-billion dollar tax cut to corporations that even John McCain referred to as ridiculous.
