Should the KKK be allowed to protest at historical sites?
WCSox replied to BHAMBARONS's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 03:36 PM) I think it's naive to think that qualified minorities have never and are never denied employment or completely overlooked based on race, religion, or sex, which is why such laws have had to be implemented in the first place. Oh, I'm not denying that it hasn't happened. I'm sure it has. However, penalizing people like me (who had nothing to do with it) is completely asinine. Like Nuke said, two wrongs don't make a right... especially when you're penalizing people for something that other people 30, 50, or 100 years ago did. What's next? Slave reparations? :headshake That logic may apply if you're applying for a job at the DMV or something. But, to quote one of the Grinder Rules, "good enough, isn't" when you work in a competitive field. Companies spend tens of thousands of dollars flying in/hosting job candidates. Major companies fly in up to 15-20 people for one position, which probably costs them $25,000 or more. If you only meet the "general standards", you won't get past a phone interview. Clarence Thomas wrote a good essay on the "feeling inferior" point. You should check it out. Preferential treatment in hiring in any way is unethical. -

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 02:04 PM) The whole idea of affirmative action or any manner of preferences is simply trying to use 2 wrongs to make a right. You can't complain all day long about how unfair things are then happily accept an unfair advantage that benefits you. Thats hypocrasy. What is needed is a level playing field where merit decides who gets what. If that means that minorities don't get a certain percentage of jobs or college admissions or whatever then maybe they should shut their yaps and look to better themselves. Couldn't have said it better myself. I've seen numerous instances of female and/or minoritiy candidates (who are underrepresented in my field) receive job offers, while more-qualified white males who interviewed for the same positions received "Thank you for your interest" letters. None of these under-represented people were significantly "disadvantaged" in comparison to their white male counterparts. Affirmative actions creats feelings of inferiority in those who benefit from it and feelings of hostility in everyone else. Not to mention that it fails to accomplish the most important thing: selecting the best person for the position. -
QUOTE(The Critic @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 09:22 AM) My take, FWIW: Texas is tough, although I like the Sox' chances against Texas pitching. Both Cincy and St. Lou seem pretty beatable right now. Houston is picking it up a bit right now, and might get up for a "rematch" against the World Champs. I think the Sox will be all right. I pretty much agree. Texas is in first place only because the AL West is awful. Cincy is getting decent pitcing right now, but none of those guys are good enough to sustain it all season. St. Louis and Houston are the only teams that have enough pitching talent to scare me. But even after those six tough games against the Cards and Astros, we have 10 against the Pirates, Cubs, and Orioles.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 11:59 AM) I'd venture to say in many of these cases, you get more people from the opposite side of the aisle looking to jump on her every word, versus people from the same side of the aisle who actually view her as relevant. ^^^ It's a shame that Coulter has to act like such a spiteful, sadistic b****. She's incredibly bright/witty and has written some very good columns in the past. But she's reduced herself to this ultra-polarizing figure that nobody takes seriously anymore.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2006 -> 08:51 AM) Cindy Sheehan gets more publicity these days from the right wing attacking her than from anything else she does. A lot of us stopped caring about her a long time ago. Ann Coulter gets more publicity these days from the left wing attacking her than from anything else she does. A lot of us stopped caring about her a long time ago. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 11, 2006 -> 04:51 PM) Rollins is awesome!!! He was awesome when he was the lead singer of Black Flag. But he's not so awesome as a political commentator.

Of the modern-day comedians, Chris Rock and Dave Attell are probably my faves (the latter's stand-up is highly underrated, IMO). Also really like Foxworthy and that booze-bag Ron White. Larry the Cable Guy is just OK overall, but he's absolutely hilarious every once in a while. Of the all-time crowd, Pryor and Murphy were fantastic. Those two and Rock are my Top 3 overall. EDIT: Have to add Cosby to that list as well.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 07:38 AM) Which I'm going to guess has nothing to do with the crack on the back of his skull... Didn't realize that you were referring to the back of the skull. I heard that the doctors had to open up his skull slightly to relieve pressure caused by the swelling of his brain (which apparently is common in head traumas), but maybe that's something different. And who knows if it's accurate. Anyway, his prognosis sounds better than it did yesterday and that's definitely good news. -
He's a bad mofo.

Let's just give up now. We're never going to catch the Tigers. :rolly

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 06:47 PM) Well, I'm not 100% sure JOse would be the pitcher he is today if he were still in NY. As we know now a lot of it was just being in a bad situation in NY. He needed to get out of there. His stuff was always awesome, but he had to find a spot where he was comfortable. A lot of that had to do with his family's situation, IMO. New York isn't an easy place to play, but it's not like Mel Stottlemyre is a bad pitching coach. And Jose pitched pretty well there in '04. Why Steinbrenner would trade away one of the best pitchers in the history of Cuban baseball AND EAT PART OF HIS CONTRACT for a journeyman one-year wonder is beyond me. But I'm sure glad that he did it. -

QUOTE(DABearSoX @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 06:39 PM) wow, when they put that stat up about Jose .695 lifetime winning percentage......just makes me want to hug Estaban Loaiza for having a career year in '03.... ... and not to mention George Steinbrenner for being an impatient boob. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 06:30 PM) His pitch count is still VERY low, so no. However the first sign of trouble, and I say get out the hook. Yeah, I agree. He doesn't look tired, either. He was still hitting 95 last inning. Jose -

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 02:49 PM) I have no idea. As I said, I'm getting it 3rd hand. The latest is that the knee injuries are sprains with massive cuts & scrapes and not broken or fractured. Apparently when he bounced off the van winshield he slid for a few feet after hitting the street. I don't know anything about Kelly's brother other than he does work for a local media outlet there. I'm hearing "fractured sinus cavity" from several media outlets. Sounds like your source is accurate. -
Yesterday, the Weather Channel said that Alberto would unlikely reach hurricane strength and it would probably weaken today. Oops.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 01:14 PM) Pretty bad skull fracture (3rd hand from co-workers brother) and talk that he might require a plate. If he needs a plate... I can't imagine being cleared to play football ever again. I'm not an M.D., but wouldn't they have X-rayed him immediately? If he had a fractured skull, it seems that we should've heard about that around the same time that we heard about the broken jaw. Unless they're intentionally keeping it quiet. Anyway, I really hope that it's not true. -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 05:01 AM) Fake really isn't a good word to use for wrestling, scripted works out better because those guys get the s*** beat out of them every day. You're right about one thing though, for the most part they are juiced up freaks but most of them are tough as nails. And that's why I don't watch wrestling. I'll throw Mario Lemieux's name into the ring. He fought through severe back pain throughout most of his career, yet still managed to be one of the Top 5 hockey players ever. He was shelved a herniated disc (which also became infected and had him bed-ridden for a while) in the early '90s, came back for the playoffs, and won a Cup with such agonizing back pain that he couldn't lace up his own skates. Despite the pain, he was still the best player on the ice during the playoffs. He then fought through Hodgskin's lymphoma a couple years later, going through two months of chemo. On his last day of chemo, he caught a flight to Philly and scored a goal and an assist that evening. He may not have been the "toughest" athlete ever, but his ability to excel while fighting those ailments is miraculous.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 09:50 AM) Real dumbass...wasn't wearing a helmet. Despite the fact that he wears one at his job. I've heard broken jaw, facial lacerations, missing teeth... and have also heard severe concussion, partially-collapsed lung and broken leg, but can't confirm that. -
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 09:54 AM) That's according to the ESPN gun, and I guess that's usually off. People at the game said he got it up to 94 once or twice, but mainly 89-91. He started out throwing 89-90, according to ESPN's gun, but he started to throw harder (mainly 92-93 with an occasional 94) after he began to get into trouble. But, yeah, it's possible that ESPN's gun was off. Comcast's is never accurate.

QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ Jun 12, 2006 -> 09:51 AM) My opinion of Ozzie talking about Grimsley is pretty simple. Why in the world is Ozzie even bothering to talk about Grimsley??? I'm aware that the media probably brought it up in a question to him but has he ever heard of 'No Comment' or 'Thats not my business' as a response to any situation? It would be a bit out of character for Ozzie to offer a "no comment", to say the least.
