Should the KKK be allowed to protest at historical sites?
WCSox replied to BHAMBARONS's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 12:56 PM) Not sure if you want examples of racial discrimination in the workplace or what...You'd have to be living under a rock to not have heard of countless occurances such as Texaco, Mitsubishi, etc... Yep, Texaco got sued because people were using ethnic slurs at work, although there was no evidence of it translating into discrimination in hiring. I don't know as much about Mitsubishi's history although, like I said, I'm sure that minorities and women are still discriminated against. But this isn't exactly 1950's Alabama. And I'm sure everyone here is aware of the Rainbow Coalition's work in blackmailing companies like McDonald's into out-of-court settlements. My former high school will only hire African-American teachers now (haven't hired a Caucasian since the mid-90's)... but the liberal media hasn't said a peep about that one for some reason. But none of this garbage was carried out by people like you or me, yet Affirmative Action deems that we're the ones who are going to pay for it. And that's flat-out wrong. -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) Oh, s***, so now my posts seem feminine?? I'm gonna go get wasted after work and pick up a girl just to recover my manhood. Well, at least THAT issue has been settled. -

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) You changed a quote from Sleepy from "my opinions" to "my blatantly liberal opinions", I did that to illustrate the point that her opinion was a stereotypically-liberal one. Again, no personal insult was made. If that were the case, I wouldn't have PM'd Sleepy with a "no offense, I just hate Affirmative Action" message earlier. So, people aren't allowed to attack other people's IDEAS in the "Filibuster" forum? That's news to me. There's a fine line between attacking one's ideas and attacking one personally, and you don't seem to understand the difference. No, what's sad is being hyper-sensitive enough to equate calling somebody a "liberal" or "conservative" to calling somebody a "jerk" or "asshole". -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) Alright, I'll let you go first. Sorry, I already provided many examples of how minorities and women are being given preferrential treatment. It's been "your turn" to provide a concrete example for about 2 hours now. -

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 11:55 AM) I think perhaps you missed the point here. What I was commenting on was using either of those terms as insults. Like you were doing to Sleepy in this case, and like what a lot of people here have resorted to. Its as if they just replace "asshole" or "jerk" with "liberal" or "conservative". All that accomplishes is to automatically discount the opinions of half the country, and make you look like you don't have anything material to contribute. You are of course welcome to post whatever you'd like. I'm just exercising my right to point out that I think its childish. And I don't just mean you specifically - not at all. I did NOT use the word "liberal" as an insult. I used it as a general, non-derogatory label. I couldn't say "Democrat" because I have no idea how he votes. I'm sorry that you misinterpreted my comments. -

QUOTE(Felix @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 11:39 AM) And its fine that you feel that way, but its still a story because its the first time it was done by a team. Yet another reason to not read that piece-of-trash publication. -

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 11:37 AM) I'm going to say here that the whole use of the terms "liberal" and "right-wing" and all those other labels are growing tiresome. Its childish, petty and lacking in any sort of intelligent thought. The insults are getting old, and so is the demonization of anything outside of the poster's party of choice. Being "liberal" isn't some excuse people have for a lack of personal responsibility, any more than being "conservative" is an excuse for leveraging hate in politics. Both are examples only of a minority on either side. I don't agree with that. The labels "liberal" and "conservative" are used (in a non-derogatory way) all of the time to describe general political philosophies and typically do not refer to extremists (that would be "left-wing" and "right-wing"). I have no problem with people calling me a "conservative." It's what I am. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 11:44 AM) It was insinuated by your "the tide has turned" comment, unlike your saying that I hate white males (I guess I partly hate myself?). Apparently white males have it worse than minorities did before. Feel free to use your own terminology, but it did sound like you were whining that white males are now being opressed. Um, no, you were just putting words in my mouth, as you hypocritically accused me of doing. I never said that, either. Again, putting words in my mouth. Your opinion might mean more if you backed it up with some evidence. -

QUOTE(Felix @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 11:36 AM) Its new to the ballpark though, and thats what they are getting at. Teams don't use cell phone to call the bullpen.. they never have. Since the Cubs did it for the first time, its going to be considered 'revolutionary technology', which is what the article refers to it as. Only the Tribune would write something that stupid. It's a f***ing phone... and there's already a land line from the dugout to the bullpen. One uses wires and the other doesn't. Big f***ing deal. -
QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 08:45 AM) Thank god he's not signed through next year. It's time to end the Pods experiment in LF. And replace him with who? Ozuna, who doesn't play LF well and whose OBP will be lower? Fields, who hasn't played LF at all and hasn't seen major-league pitching yet? If Pods fails to put up a .350 OBP and steals less than 30 bases this year (or has significat groin poblems again), I'm all for looking for an alternative. But he currently has a .344 OBP, has already swiped 21 bags, and his healthy, so I don't think that's going to happen. There's no point in replacing him with an inferior player.

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 11:08 AM) I didnt think it was that big a deal, but apparently, the media are running wild with this the last couple of days. If they start letting outfielders wear wireless headphones ............... In an ultra-conservative sport where instant replay, computerized pitch tracking, and aluminum bats aren't allowed? No freaking way. -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) So you honestly think white males are an oppressed group nowadays?? Sounds like a huge overexaggeration, in my opinion. I never used the word "oppressed." What were you saying about putting words in one's mouth? :rolly So, having a job and being able to feed your family and pay your mortgage/rent is a "minor hurdle"? Exactly what "obstacles" do minorities face today? College scholarships? Graduate fellowships? Preferential treatment with regard to job offers and college admissions? Prefferential treatment in the workplace? Oh, I'm sorry. Did I hurt your feelings? QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 10:53 AM) lol... Some of you are so quick to label. I don't nor have I ever claimed any sort of political affiliation; just stating my blatantly liberal opinions. Fixed -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 10:34 AM) Having words put in my mouth is definitely a pet peeve though...No need to resort to that no matter how upset you got... Since you won't respond my questions, I had to try to get an answer out of you somehow. And why is that? (Try to actually answer this time.) Typical liberal: It's all fun and games to illogically stick it to "the system" because you, as a part of that same system, haven't been targeted yet. But when it DOES happen to you, you might not think it's so funny. -
QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 10:27 AM) Garland won 8 in a row to start last year, then ran into troubles in the second half. I don't see any reason he can't find a groove again -- perhaps starting with last night's game -- and win a bunch of games. His ERA is over 6 and he's still gone 5-3. I don't see any reason why he can't win 9-10 of his remaining 18 starts, especially if our bullpen gets better. Agreed about the starts, but it's unlikely that his ERA will get back down to the low 4's. Possible, but not likely.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 10:13 AM) Oh, please... You're funny. There's LEGAL, INSTITUTIONAL discrimination against "over-represented" races/genders in job hiring now and you're still trying to play the minorities-aren't-getting-a-fair-shake card. :headshake -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 10:02 AM) You keep talking in the past tense and mentioning "30, 50, or 100 years ago" as if it's something that would not or does not happen today... If it still does happen today, it doesn't happen very often. In fact, many companies have Affirmative Action-based "quotas" now, where it's OFFICIAL POLICY to discriminate against white males. If anything, the tide has been turned now against male Caucasians. And if discrimination against minorities is still happening today, penalizing people who have nothing to do with it is just flat-out stupid. Take the corporations to court, rather than take jobs away from the other innocent applicants. -
QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 08:28 AM) Fixed it for ya What are you talking about? That ball was hit over his head onto the track. Oh, and Jermaine didn't put two extra men on base, either.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 09:44 PM) There have been marketing-type surveys on these sorts of things in cities that MLB teams have considered moving to, and in almost all the ones I recall, Portland comes out as being one of the top candidates in terms of "How interested would the people be" and "How would they support the team". No idea why, but that city seems to really want a baseball team. They really liked their basketball team too...before, well, you know. I don't think that a baseball team in Portland would work out in the long run. It's too close to Seattle (

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 09:38 PM) Clarence Thomas is a beneficiary of affirmative action. It's how he got into the College of the Holy Cross and how he got into Yale. He probably also was nominated to the Supreme Court because of his color, to replace the retiring Thurgood Marshall. This isn't to say that Justice Thomas isn't qualified, but rather that his nomination was at least in part because of the color of his skin. yet I don't hear many federal circuit court judges whining about getting passed over because Clarence Thomas was black. He may criticize Affirmative Action as something that isn't right for America, but if it wasn't for it, nobody would care what he thinks today. Oh, I wouldn't doubt that he was given an extra break or two in his education/career because of the color of his skin. But did you ever consider that his own experience as an alleged beneficiary of Affirmative Action is what prompted him to write the essay in the first place? Did you ever consider that Clarence's own colleagues may have treated him like a second-class student/attorney/judge because they suspected that he was treated preferrentially? And perhaps it's possible that he didn't want the next generation of African-American professionals to experience the same Affirmative Action-induced hostility that he did? :rolly -
OFFICIAL GO CUBBIES THIS WEEKEND THREAD!!!
WCSox replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in The Diamond Club
Frankly, I couldn't care less who wins. The Cubs are a joke who will be lucky to finish 4th in their division and the Tigers are currently a bunch of unproven front-runners. The former isn't worth caring about at all and the latter isn't worth caring about until August. -
QUOTE(tigerfan @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 08:23 AM) Was that the one against Toronto? If so, I will agree it was a pretty awesome play. The one Rogers made was awesome too though if for no other reason then the fact that he actually was able to get over to the ball in time, and get the runner at first on top of it. It was incredible. With no disrespect to the outstanding play that Rogers made last night, comparing it to Tad throwing out a guy while flipping over in mid-air is ridiculous.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 14, 2006 -> 08:21 AM) Those two guys are the key to the whole season imo. Indeed. Ozzie's going to lean on those guys big-time and hopefully their arms can handle it.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 13, 2006 -> 07:36 PM) I think Oz made the right call. He had a decent outing going and Judy was screaming to get out. Best to leave it to the pen at that point. Agreed. Ozzie took him out at exactly the right time. Hats off to Cotts for cleaning up Judy's mess as well. Didn't see the first four innings, but it appears that Jon pitched pretty well. And that's great news. He's looked much better over his last three or four starts and hopefully that trend will continue.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised if he ever pitched again. Thanks for last season, Dustin, and good luck.
