QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 25, 2006 -> 09:37 AM) Look at his last 4 years vs the sox though, with the exception of 2004, he has held the Sox in check pretty well Yes, that's what I was referring to. Sorry I wasn't more explicit.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 25, 2006 -> 08:17 AM) I wanted to say something similar, but I thought against it because Kittle was an ex-Sox player and I didnt want to side with Bonds in any issue. But I do agree, its a story that Kittle tells, and it cannot be verified by anyone but Kittle and Bonds. And given the timeframe of the comments, it was an easy target for Kittle and generated tons of buzz for his book. Until I see(or hear) a quote from Bonds himself that says "I hate White People", Im going to attempt to give him some benefit of the doubt. The way that Barry plays the race card through the media is reason enough for me to dislike him. The fact that he has his own personal section in the locker room with a La-Z-Boy and a big-screen TV and that he routinely fails to show up for the Giants team photos doesn't help, either.

QUOTE(Damen @ Apr 25, 2006 -> 07:26 AM) What about the Ozzie philosophy of throwing games away by starting all your scrubs at once? As opposed to the Dusty Baker philosophy of over-playing one's starters? Last night was a good time to rest the starters. We were riding an 8-game winning streak and never hit Moyer well anyway. I turned the game off after the 4th, partially because the Mariners' announcers are so freaking bad. Those guys make DJ and Singleton look like Vin Scully and Howard Cosell.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) ^^^^^^^^^ I think people would be amazed to find out how racist Bonds is. Some of the stuff I've heard from ex-teammates is pathetic, in regards to how he acts. No doubt in my mind that if he passes Whitey later this year, he retires.

Uhhh... burrito supreme. I've worked with a number of Asian and Indian students over the years and fully appreciate how difficult it sometimes is to be a non-native English speaker here. I always feel bad when I have to ask them to repeat themselves two or three times. I can't imagine what it feels like to be in that situation in front of a camera. No wonder Freddy hurries through interviews.

If they can't win the series against Seattle, we're going to have more to worry about than exorcising the AL West demons.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 24, 2006 -> 08:39 AM) Sadly, 2k5 is right here. And on top of it, not only is our division better this year, but the other divisions are probably better too...you've added pitching in Boston, Damon in NY, A ton of stuff in Toronto, some experience in Oakland, some pitching in Texas, some health and youth in Anaheim, and a few other quality pieces in Seattle. That said, winning 100+ is certainly not out of the question, because on paper this team looks like a monster team to me. It may very well be up to the challenge. But it's going to be damn hard to pull off. I'm not sure that the rest of the AL improve that much. The Yankees haven't. The Angels lost two starting pitchers and Colon is back on the DL. Texas and Toronto have only improved marginally (this is especially true if Burnett's elbow is still problematic). The Twins have apparently gotten worse. IMO the only teams that have improved and are competitors are Boston and Oakland... and they were competitive last season. Detroit is better, but they're still going to struggle to win 80 games. If we fail to win 90, though, we'll be in trouble because I think that Cleveland will win about that many.
-
I'm sticking with my original prediction of 95. The division is certainly better, but I don't think that KC and Detroit have improved enough to take away that many wins from us.

QUOTE(AirScott @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 05:07 PM) Politte's numbers were so good last year, I wouldn't even begin to expect him to match those, but what would you say the vicinity would be? an ERA in the 2.60-3.00 range would do us a lot of good. Yeah, I guess that range would qualify as "in the vicinity," but I don't think that he'll get anywhere near that. I'm thinking ~3.50 in a best-case-scenario with a 4.00 being more likely.

KW struck freaking gold with this guy. Getting Count AND COMPENSATION from Steinbrenner for Loaiza is probably one of the best trades in franchise history. And re-signing him at a (relatively) paltry 3 years/$29 million was a second stroke of genius.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) Boone came in yesterday, the Sox were already up 6-2, and he got one out and then proceeded to walk 2 batters, and his pitches werent even close. McCarthy came in, walked one more, then got Hunter to fly out deep to right field. Glad I wasn't around to see that. I really hope that KW makes a deal for another reliever before the deadline. No offense to Logan, who I'm sure has enough talent to make it in the majors, but he just ain't ready yet.
-
I'm not worried about Cotts. However, Politte's track record strongly suggests that he won't put up anything in the vicinity of last year's numbers. KW's going to have to make a trade for bullpen help before the deadline. Not necessarily one that involves big names, but we're going to need somebody better than Cliff, Logan, and Thornton.
-
The "poor guy" also got a $5.5 million signing bonus. Nothing against Joe, but I'm not going to shed a tear for a multi-millionaire who can't hack it in the majors.
-
Nice to see Count continue his domination and some rare performances at the plate from Anderson and Uribe. The only negative was Politte continuing to suck.
-
Sounds like something Tom Brady or Tedy Bruschi would say. That's the kind of attitude that wins multiple championships.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 07:27 AM) I'd say Buerhle is the best pitcher in recent or modern times for the sox - not the best ever. And I'd further add a condition that we are referring to long term career performance, not one or two year shots. Mark's doing a phenominal job so far, but I'm not going to use his name and Cooperstown in the same sentence until he's in his early '30s and is still pitching at this level. While there are quite a few superlatives that can be thrown his way, one negative is that he's not really a top-tier, dominating pitcher (no Cy Young Award, no 20-win season, no season with an ERA under 3.00). Of course, as Tex mentioned, he's entering his prime now and that could change. That said, he's consistently good and has been very durable thus far. I'm not sure if he'll be as good as Glavine when all is said and done, but I could easily see him with 250+ wins and a possible trip to Cooperstown if he can win another championship or two with the Sox.
-
I think that Santana bounces back today, but the Sox still win 3-2. I'm hoping that the game's a great pitcher's duel because I'm leaving work an hour early to see it.

QUOTE(heirdog @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 08:58 AM) Why would Sam McKinney from Diff'rent Strokes be interested in this? Link

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 12:42 AM) Wow Alex. I didn't "rate" your article, but I disagree with the general tone of the whole thing. Kenny Williams is the "loudmouth leader of the Sox"? Frank took his shots at the club when he left, and nothing was said in response. But Frank couldn't keep his big yap shut and continued to take shots. I'm glad Kenny called him out for it. He had it coming. As for the tarp sliding thing, they had expressed concern after each occurance of it, and Mark didn't get the hint. They have $9 million and a possible championship season riding on this guy. I'm glad Kenny put a stop to it. ^^^ If you're that sensitive to criticism, be more objective and put blame where blame is due. I agree that KW has been a loudmouth recently, but that doesn't excuse Frank and Mark's immature and unprofessional behavior.

Someone should send it to DannyCooksey.

QUOTE(DannyCooksey @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 08:12 PM) Cub Fan Here Just wanted to throw my two cents in here. I am not saying it's everyone on this board, but for those that have made their snide comments and laughed at a man's misfortune. How sick are you people??? Actually, we're laughing at the Cubs' misfortune, not Lee's. I don't think that anybody here dislikes Derek on a personal level. Plus, I'm sure that his new $65 million contract is keeping his spirits high. BTW, way to go troll on a Sox board like a pre-pubescent teenager. What was that you were saying about feeling "inferior?" Grow up.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 10:00 AM) They have already begun trying to figure out how to fit the ego down the Dan Ryan for delivery. So that's what all of the construction is for. It'll happen soon after he retires. Remember the mural to Frank out in left field back during the '01 season? I'd like to see statues of Harold and Robin, but I don't think it'll happen.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 06:36 PM) "Wait 'til next year." That should be their marketing campaign slogan. I'm glad that Lee was re-signed before the injury, though. Not that wrist fractures are career-threatening or anything, but Derek's a good guy it's nice that he has something to offset his recent misfortune.
-
I don't like to revel in injuries but when they happen to the Cubs, I can't help but... The coincidene with Nomar's injury last year is very interesting. Maybe they really are cursed!

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Apr 20, 2006 -> 05:40 PM) In the business this is called bias and interest. When your entire case boils down to having people that are "pissed", bad mouth some one, its not a good one. [legal mumbo-jumbo] That is going to be hard to prove, because they are going to have to prove Bond's knowledge. Its very hard because its always a mater of credibility. Sure, there will be credibility issues with some witnesses (especially his ex-girlfriend). And there will also be witnesses who have no reason to lie about Bonds on the stand. Barry's experiencing one of life's lessons: When you spend your adult life being an arrogant asshole and a racist, people are NOT going to go out of their way to help you when you're in trouble. This isn't a case of the big, bad government picking on Barry. (Remember that the Feds considered charging Palmiero as well.) This is an example of the government being able to build a case because a number of people don't feel inclined to protect Barry's arrogant, racist ass. I agree that the case against Palmiero would've been stronger. But apparently the government couldn't produce enough credible witnesses to testify on their behalf. I'm not sure why that is, but it might have to do with the fact that Rafy didn't smack his mistresses around, treat his teammates and team staff members like s***, or use the race card to defend his indefensible actions.
