    Garland

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 13, 2006 -> 12:46 PM) I hate to have to say it, but I'm going to say it anyway...if Jon keeps putting up games like last night...well, it might be time to start looking at the backup option with the incredible changeup. Give Jon some extra rest out in the pen or something like that. I don't know about that. That might erode his confidence even more and be counter-productive. I'd like to see him given a chance to get out of this funk. If Garland's our #5, we're still in pretty good shape... even if he isn't pitching well.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 13, 2006 -> 12:42 PM) I prefer to give players more than a month and a half to show what they can do. What are you talking about? Garland's been a full-time starter for us for the past four years. He was inconsistent and mediocre overall for the first three of those seasons and, of course, stepped it up last year. We already know what he can do. Yep, he's pitching inconsistently again... just like '02-'04. I like Jon as a person and, as I said before, really appreciate what he did for us last year. But KW and JR didn't fork over $29 million for a repeat of those '02-'04 numbers. If he gets out of his funk and can end the season with a 4.00-4.20 ERA, I'll be really happy.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 13, 2006 -> 12:20 PM) Nice to see our own fans turn on our players so quickly, especially after what Jon did last season. Nice to see Jon pitch like crap after signing a $29 million contract. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ May 13, 2006 -> 12:21 PM) All I can say is that I'm extremely grateful that Garland had a year like he did in 2005. More and more it seems that maybe this is the actual Garland. ^^^
  4. I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow night, because I don't get WGN out here and InDemand won't air games that WGN carries over the Extra Innings package.

I can accept us losing a game because Santana shut down our offense, but Garland giving up 7 earned runs to a not-very-good Twins lineup is unacceptable. Jon needs to get his act together.
  6. QUOTE(shoota @ May 13, 2006 -> 10:47 AM) Incorrect, Chicago has not always been a Cubs town. The Sox were the more popular team until three things dramatically increased the Cubs fanbase: Harry Carey, his hyping of beautiful Wrigley Field, and WGN. I didn't start following baseball until the early 80's, but it's my understanding that the Sox didn't exactly dominate the Cubs in terms of popularity before the Caray/WGN days. I'm sure that the Sox were significantly more popular at times (e.g., the pre-Black Sox, Go-Go Sox, South Side Hitmen, and Winnin' Ugly periods), but I never had the impression that Chicago was a "Sox town" before the mid-80's.
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 13, 2006 -> 03:29 AM) Specifically, what you get with this set is game 3 of the ALDS, game 5 of the ALCS, all 4 games of the WS and a behind the scenes type DVD with interviews, locker celebrations, parade footage, etc. They really should've included Game 2 of the ALCS. Outside of the infamous ending, Buehrle pitched a gem.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 13, 2006 -> 07:29 AM) Wow has anyone seen Radkes #'s this year? What is going on with him??? He's in his mid-30's and is beginning to decline?
  9. It speaks volumes that Rowand's ex-teammates were calling and text-messaging him yesterday morning. I'd love to see Aaron in a Sox uniform again some day.
  10. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ May 12, 2006 -> 03:25 PM) Shocking f*** him. Everything good he did for the organization was more than cancelled out by his big mouth. If and when he ever makes the hall of fame I hope they send his sorry ass in an A's uniform. We dont want anything to do with him anymore. Nah. Despite sporadically acting like an asshat for the past six years, I still like the guy. What he did for the organization was tremendous and, in my eyes, overshadows the negatives.
  11. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 12, 2006 -> 11:32 AM) Excel is MAGIC. SigmaPlot is significantly better.
  12. QUOTE(AbeFroman @ May 12, 2006 -> 08:21 AM) Torii is in the last year of his deal... the Twins will probably deal him if they are still far back in July. Still, I'd rather not see the sox pay Torii Hunter half of his 12 million dollar salary just to hit .265 and play good defense. I'd rather keep BA in hitting .200 (hopefully by then) and playing good defense and see that money appropriated elswhere. Keep in mind that Hunter and Santana are MIN's only two marquee players. Their ticket sales would drop significantly if they unloaded Torii. Plus, we don't need a CF. We need another reliable arm in the 'pen.
  13. Well, at least he didn't try to kiss Suzie Kolber.
  14. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ May 12, 2006 -> 07:58 AM) I say if Brian continues to struggle with the bat, Kenny should look to get his hands on Torii Hunter, come the trade deadline. Then we could look to sign him for 3-4 years. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing what Brian can do, but Torii will probably be available come July. The Twins don't have the horses this year, and probably won't want to pay him. I doubt that the Twins would trade Torii to a division rival.
  15. QUOTE(G&T @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:54 PM) That's the other problem, it's supposed to rain until Monday. Good thing the Sox will be playing in domes for the next week.
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 11, 2006 -> 11:32 AM) this guy is a bullpen guy, which makes me believe that BMAC will be starting on monday, and maybe after that. Ah, I see. I assumed that he was a starter.
  17. QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 10, 2006 -> 07:59 PM) new gm of royals?? Is this just speculation or is somebody reporting that he interviewed?
  18. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ May 11, 2006 -> 10:31 AM) This is the problem with an extremist government. If the republicans have control, you get this s***, if the democrats gain control, you will see other kinds of sick s***. The death of moderate political thought in BOTH parties in America is a bigger problem than people think. Agreed. This is also a classic power struggle between a conservative government and a left-leaning press that is trying to influence government.
  19. I wonder what McCarthy will think of this? It sounded like he wanted to get into the rotation if what's-his-name-from-last-night didn't pan out. Looks like Ozzie REALLY wants Brandon to stay in the long-relief role for now.
  20. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ May 11, 2006 -> 09:19 AM) Show me where I EVER said Jenks "can't close" and I SAID that I "worry" that teams will eventually figure him out if he's our only closer. So, you "worry" that other teams will figure out Jenks, but don't have any evidence of it. Umm.... OK. Guess I misunderstood you. I'm not sure what your point is, though. Sounds like kind of an irrational fear to me.
  21. QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ May 11, 2006 -> 12:38 AM) I can't stand this guy when I have to listen to his broadcasts. Hawk may be a homer but atleast he gives credit to the other team where credit is due. Hudler is just a pure jackass who RARELY gives any credit to the opposition, or atleast the Sox being that's the games I'm usually forced to endure his jock-like lingo. IE., last night against Haeger... Angels have been hitting horribly, no doubt about that. So they finally tag Haeger, a rookie knuckleballer making his first ML appearance, and Hudler starts talking about how the "Angels are back" and pimping their clutch hits (nevermind the fact that Haeger gave them all their baserunners via the walks). Huddy, your team isn't "back" nor are they "clutch". They took advantage of a 22 year old kid making his first start who couldn't control his 73mph knuckler and can only hit 84 with his fastball. I watched the Angels broadcast last night and Huddler and the rest of the crew were giving B-Mac crazy props. Huddler wasn't the ring-leader, but he did give McCarthy some serious respect. Agreed about the second point, though. Huddler is annoying as hell and a douche.
  22. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ May 11, 2006 -> 09:01 AM) What is with everybody's knee-jerk response that I'm bashing Jenks because he had one bad outing? I'm not. I'm SAYING that I'd like to have more options besides Jenks and his--face it--94 MPH fastball right now. Southside, you're right: it was unfortunately a reminder of the 2004 Sox when we had the guaranteed loss when the fifth "starter" would come on (remember Arnie Munoz? BLAHHHH!). But whatever. This all happened because Jose was hurt so it's sort of moot. But it was what it was: Jenks didn't have it last night, and by the time he left, we weren't coming back. Whatever, one game. Big deal. But I stick by my concern that everybody will "figure out" Jenks if we only rely on him. I don't see any evidence that teams will "figure out" Jenks. It's just a matter of him commanding his offspeed pitches. When he does, he's lights-out. When he doesn't, he tends to give up some hits (and A LOT of hits when he's not locating at all). He's been used a lot recently, so maybe that has had something to do with his fastball being in the mid-90s last night. Who knows. Bobby's not Mariano Rivera, but he's already succeeded on the biggest stage of all. How about we wait a few weeks before declaring that he can't close or that the league now has him "figured out."
  23. Well, we might as well just pack it up now and quit. Bobby's obviously going to suck this year. :rolly QUOTE(knightni @ May 11, 2006 -> 01:14 AM) His curve hasn't been thrown for a strike successfully since late 2005. Not true. He was throwing it for strikes a couple of weeks ago. Bobby has sucked lately, but we're talking two bad outings. Remember when Foulke would pitch awfully for a month straight? Let's wait until Bobby pitches poorly for an extended period of time before calling for his head.
  24. QUOTE(The Critic @ May 11, 2006 -> 07:12 AM) I love how they fall right in line with the whole "Bartman Curse" thing. Yep, a foul ball triggered an 8-run inning.....uh huh...... Yep, and I love this quote as well... Only a newspaper in a wacko city like San Francisco would use a phrase like "savage intolerance" to describe the overwhelmingly pro-Cub Chicago media. Yes, people in Chicago expect their teams to win at some point. And the '03 Cubs were absolutely stacked with talent. Sorry, but Dusty has to take some of the blame for that meltdown.
