  1. QUOTE(joeynach @ May 5, 2006 -> 05:07 PM) I was in reference to Magglois Injury in 04 when he collided with Willie. Maggs was held out of the lineup for several days, but when came back everyone breathed a huge sigh of releif with just a calf or muscle strain. He continued to play for sometime before finally going down with the nagging problem being diagnosed a meniscus tear. Then when he came back for that 1 game in cleveland July 31 I think it was and re-strained the muscle he was done for the year. So far to me this whole situation mirrors something just like that same situation. An injury that should be minor, why has it been a months worth of bothering him. Now 5 str8 days out the lineup this weeks, sometime out of the lineup last week. All sounds a little fishy for a mere strain and nothing else. I don't recall the specifics of the initial diagnosis of Maggs' injury, but I can't imagine that any doctor would confuse a meniscus tear with a calf strain. As was mentioned earlier, a calf strain involves a tear of the muscle. That's NOT necessarily a minor injury, with "5 str8 days out of the lineup" being on the less-severe side of the injury.
  2. QUOTE(qwerty @ May 5, 2006 -> 03:58 PM) Dye's arm strength doesn't mean s***... he has vlad like accuracy. Which is why he plays RF. But he can still get the ball back into the infield quickly and reads fly balls better than most RFs. If range were the only factor used to evaluate his defensive skills, he'd be playing 1B. Uh, not really. He's a good offensive player who tends to make a lot of clutch hits. A-Rod and Tejada are in the "elite" class, but I don't think that Jeter is. What I've seen him do suggests otherwise. Range isn't everything. What I see a player do during a game (and especially a playoff game) carries much more weight than stats on range or fielding percentage. Popular opinion influences everybody to a certain extent. I was actually beginning to believe that Ozzie's "Sunday Lineups" were killing the Sox last week. If you want to bring offense into the argument, sure. But if you're only talking about defense, I see very little difference in range or arm strength. But after the plays that A-Rod botched at 3B in the playoffs last year, I'll give Jeter the slight defensive edge.
  3. Dye might even be available to pinch-hit sometime next week. Unless he won't be able to do anything for the next two or three weeks, I don't see the point in putting him on the DL. As is stated above, there's really nobody worth bringing up at this point anyway.
  4. QUOTE(YASNY @ May 5, 2006 -> 03:07 PM) For some reason, the Sox winning the pennant had more of an effect on me than them winning the World Series. I've examined that countless times, but still haven't come to a reasonable explanation for it. The fact that the Angels had pretty much owned us for the previous three years might've had something to do with that. In addition to that psychological disadvantage, I thought that a Colon-less Angels was going to be more difficult to beat than a Clemens-less Astros. After the Rocket left early in Game 1, I knew that we were going to win it all.
  5. QUOTE(joeynach @ May 5, 2006 -> 03:25 PM) I am starting to get really frustrated with this whole dye situation. This injury has now been a huge question mark for our lineup the last 2 weeks. I dont know why they dont put hom on the dl, he obviously is injured enough to be so. What it sounds like is they are not too sure why he is so hurt from just a calf strain. To me it sounds like a tear to partial tear and possible torn miniscus. I think him not being on the DL is an absolute joke and unfair to this team. To have that question mark hang over the teams lineup everyday in the clubhouse is not fair to the other 25 guys. Someone should be called up to get some playing time since JD has basically been not ready to play for at least 7 days. You might as well Dl him maybe retro to last week and call someone up and give JD another 7 or 8 days off while you really investigate the source of his limping and calf situation. I'm not an M.D., but isn't the meniscus in the knee? One should easily be able to differentiate a knee from a calf injury. If he does have a calf strain, there are varying degrees of severity. He could be out from anywhere from a couple days to a month. My guess is that it's a low-grade strain, but I'm not sure why they haven't taken an MRI of his calf yet.
  6. QUOTE(qwerty @ May 5, 2006 -> 01:55 PM) Jeter's lack of range makes easy plays look harder than they are in reality... same goes for alot of players. He has never had a season that was gold glove caliber and never will... doesn't matter to win the award though as we all know. One needs to consider more than range when evaluating a player. Dye has limited range, but still makes plays in RF becuase he gets great reads on balls and has a relatively strong arm. Pods has enough range to be an elite CF, but he lacks the ability to make good reads and has a below-average arm. The knock on Jeter's range seems to stem from blatant Yankees-bashing. People hate the Yankees and hate the over-exposure on SportsCenter, so Jeter becomes an "overrated player" in the eyes of non-Yankess fans. :rolly I'll admit that his range was mediocre at best in his prime, but the bottom line is that he makes difficult plays (yes, even ones that would cause Uribe to break a sweat), makes the routine plays with few errors, and has an accuarte and relatively strong arm. And his "Baseball IQ" is about as high as it gets. Regarding defense only, I'd take Jeter in his prime over Valentin or Royce "The Choice" in their primes any day. Back in his prime (late '90s), I don't know of many SS I'd rather have, except of course for Vizquel and possibly Renteria.
  7. QUOTE(qwerty @ May 5, 2006 -> 01:19 PM) Jeter has consistently been in the bottom third range wise in the majors. I would personally have a guy who makes some more errors but gets to many more balls that should not go through for a hit. If there was an option between jose valentin or royce clayton i would take valentin every single time ( jeter is much like clayton fielding wise). Jeter's range was better back in the '90s than it is now. Granted, he wasn't THE most mobile SS back then either, but he made (and still makes) tough plays, as well as routine ones, with minimal errors. That's what really counts. Of course, Jeter also broke into the league when Vizquel was still a bad-ass and winning GGs year after year after year, so it's no wonder that he didn't win one back then. But I think that he was certainly deserving of serious consideration.
  8. QUOTE(Felix @ May 5, 2006 -> 12:30 PM) Gold gloves mean absolutely nothing now. Just look at Derek Jeter winning one, or hell, Torii Hunter (who didn't even play for the last few months). I'm not so sure about last year, but Jeter should've won at least one back in the late '90s.
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 5, 2006 -> 11:12 AM) Thome can play 1B during interleague all he wants, that's not the situation in question here. Pauly can play 150+ games simply because he's capable of it, why not let him. And yes Gload and I guess Mack can give him days off. I'm not sure where the disagreement is. Well, it's my understanding that Ozzie doesn't want Thome playing 1B at all this year, which I don't really agree with. I don't see the problem with him playing maybe 4 or 5 interleague games at 1B. As for Paulie, there's really no need to start him at 1B 158 times this season with Mack on the bench. I'd like to see him get a few days off in August and September, just to keep him fresh down the stretch.
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 5, 2006 -> 11:07 AM) I don't think he'd hurt himself at 1B but I just don't see why we'd risk it. Pauly can play 150+ games over there, it's not a particularly taxing position and assuming he remains with the team Gload can relieve Paul at 1B every once in a while. Perhaps I just don't see the need for risking losing your best hitter by putting him out at 1B. I don't see why Thome couldn't play a couple interleague games at 1B. And I don't see why Paulie needs to play 158 games at 1B again, especially with Mack and Gload on our bench.
  11. QUOTE(The Critic @ May 5, 2006 -> 09:41 AM) I wish him well with the Marlins, but I don't miss him at all. ^^^
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 5, 2006 -> 10:28 AM) Thats just the thing. With thome in the lineup, moving Pods over hurts our production, it doesnt help it. You can play small ball all you want, but you play whichever kind of ball helps your team most in the situation. Ozzie knows this, and that is why we have been scoring this many runs, and winning this many games. And I trust his view and the teams record alot more than one guy with one opinion.
  13. QUOTE(Tannerfan @ May 5, 2006 -> 09:33 AM) Another aspect to Ozzie's style, is the crackdown on drug use in MLB. The articles I've read mention a crackdown on the use of "greenies" in the clubhouse. This could mean starters who are use to a couple of pills helping them through the fatigue of playing every day, needing more days off. The White Sox were on top of their game in October last season and Ozzie's philosophy is why. Add in a crackdown on steroids and amphetamines, and we should be better off at the end of the season then every other team due to playing the entire roster during the season. This is what may have prompted KW to make the deals for Mack and Cintron, rather than spending to bolster our bullpen. If so, that's an interesting gamble... and one that may pay off.
  14. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 5, 2006 -> 10:21 AM) Thats where you are fundamentally wrong. Baseball in October is not the same as baseball in the middle of the summer. The way Ozzie has managed this team with Thome in the lineup has been brilliant, and I get exactly what hes trying to do with the tools he has. You are stuck on last year's playoff run and that team's makeup. Well its just not the same as this year's. You need to figure that out. I agree. There's no point in playing ultra-conservative "small-ball" during the regular season against teams like the Royals and Devil Rays.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 5, 2006 -> 09:53 AM) Is it really neccessary to insult him just because he doesnt share your point of view? Since about 80% of his posts contain insults, I'd say the answer is yes.
  16. QUOTE(Damen @ May 5, 2006 -> 09:04 AM) Well, since I am a critic of the Sunday lineup, I'd like to point out, again, that there is a middle ground between subbing 3 or more guys at once, and "running the best players out there in every single game". Any guesses what that might be? In a three game series, you could either go with three games with one's lineup at 89% or one game at 67% plus two at 100%. In some cases, going with the second option is more favorable. Plus, as DBAH0 pointed out, it's not Ozzie's running Willie Harris and Timo Perez out there anymore. Mackowiak and Cintron could be starters on a lot of teams. BTW, how many games have Paulie and Thome missed so far this year?
  17. Nice post. I haven't agreed with all of Ozzie's moves this year, but I'm so sick of hearing this "Sunday Lineup" crap. Recent history has shown that the Sox need to rely on bench players every once in a while. Running the best players out there in every single game isn't an option until the playoffs.
  18. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 5, 2006 -> 08:27 AM) I don't think he'll be back here next season, but that's JMHO, and you'd have to look at who'd replace him (Owens, Sweeney, FA etc.) and who would leadoff for him so there's a few factors to consider here still. I think there's a strong possibility that you're right.
  19. You can have it both ways: The '90s Indians teams ran Lofton and Vizquel on the bases at the top of the order and then reverted to station-to-station ball further down in the lineup. If you have the talent, they're not mutually-exclusive.
  20. QUOTE(fathom @ May 5, 2006 -> 07:14 AM) It doesn't sound as promising as it did when he initially hurt it. They said he was limping in the clubhouse on Wednesday. That doesn't sound good. Then again, it could've been worse.
  21. QUOTE(kapkomet @ May 4, 2006 -> 05:18 PM) Actually, chisoxfn shouldn't be the one apologizing, I should be. No need for any of the admins to apologize. It's not like we're paying for this.
  22. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 2, 2006 -> 02:23 PM) Seriously, how many teams pitch their Ace 3rd in the rotation. If/when we're back in the playoffs, I'd be surprised if Count wasn't back in the #1 slot again.
  23. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ May 4, 2006 -> 05:09 PM) I wouldn't count on that just yet. Boone went 2 plus and k'd 5 the other night and I think the Sox like that 3 Lefty option. Nelson might make it to the team, but will have to prove himself at AAA first. You might see a position player like Gload being sent down and another relief pitcher brought up. With Thornton out of options and KW probably not wanting to give up on him just yet, I agree that Gload would probably be the odd man out. Mackowiak can play any position that Ross can and is arguably a better option at the plate. Nelson is a risk, but a very low-cost one with high upside. I really like this signing.
  24. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ May 2, 2006 -> 08:14 AM) and of course on America's worst TV show...Cold Pizza. The annoying and hard to look at Dana Jacobsen uses this on the tease. Dana's a fat cow. If you're going to have a host who knows s*** about sports, she'd better look like Kelly Ripa or Laurie Dhue.
  25. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 30, 2006 -> 10:39 PM) He says if he could have ANY PLAYER IN THE GAME.......he'd take Jonathan Papelbon. That could be the dumbest thing he's ever said, and that's saying something. The Yankess/Red Sox dick-sucking on ESPN just reached an all-time low. :puke
