Just when I thought I couldnt hate the UN anymore
samclemens replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 12:06 PM) A multinational organization opposes a prison camp for foreign fighters whose host government says that international law (Geneva Conventions) don't apply to their treatment and refuses to give them any legal process. And you think that's wrong. geneva convention only governs combatents who, among other things, fight for a "nation" and wear uniforms so that they are identifiable. last time i checked, these terrorists wore street clothes as a uniform (at least the 9/11 hijackers did), or wear normal middle eastern clothing over where the open fighting is going on. they also do not fight for any common nation, much less common ideals (many, many different sects of insurgents, all have different reasons [some want saudi arabia to fall, some want israel to fall, some want the US to pull out, or any combination; others are backed by iran- my point is that the insurgency is far from unified]). on top of that, even if you were to call insurgents and terrorists an "army" (which they are not), you cant ignore the fact that they consistantly break geneva convention rules every day, yet once caught attempt to hide behind the same rules they have no regard for whatsoever. unless you are going to argue that beheading non-combatants is not a violation of the geneva convention. the geneva convention governs conventional warfare. we are not fighting another nation. it is maddening and incredulous hypocracy when one of those bastards tries to hide behind rules they gladly broke before they were caught. -

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 03:28 AM) I'm not defending Carter. I think what he did was wrong, even if it was found to be legal in court. But if it was wrong for Carter to do it for two people who were spies, its wrong for Bush to do it for several hundred suspected people of interest and determined by an NSA shift supervisor and to do it in flagrant disrepect for FISA law. Really wrong. two or two thousand- no difference. rationalizing!

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Feb 13, 2006 -> 12:23 AM) God damn, the stress in life never ends. With ACT's less than 2 months away, I'm right on the brink of making my college choice. I pretty much have it narrowed down to my top 5 or 6, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I know alot of you went through this recently and I wanted to know your advice on what to do and what not to do when choosing a college. My top 5 are: 1.) Grand Valley State University 2.) University of Illinois -- Urbana/Champaign 3.) University of Akron 4.) St. Cloud State University t5.) South Dakopta State University t5.) Southeast Missouri State University GVSU is a decent school, depending on what you study. Grand Rapids is a fun town as well, especially since the campus is right downtown.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Feb 3, 2006 -> 09:22 PM) Good for Japan. However, in America, I'm a big one on stuff that has been scientifically supported. I don't need to read that solar eclipses are because God is quite possibly pissed. word. teach what works.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2006 -> 10:13 PM) Only 1 person I saw thus far in this thread had the gall to say "If I was a member of the King family". That's why you caught my attention. no response to anything else i had to say? i am still waiting

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2006 -> 09:54 PM) Why do I need to put myself in their shoes? You've already put yoruself in their shoes and told them what they should do and how they should feel. Mrs. King worked for many causes during her life. She believed in many things. She spoke at an anti-Vietnam-war rally 3 weeks after Dr. King's assassination. Her family was close personal friends with the preacher you're calling absolutely shameless. He formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr. King in 1957, and served as its vice president. And you're trying to tell me that you believe beyond any shadow of a doubt that they found the words of that reverend inappropriate? If my relative was a powerful political figure and wished for those political views to be expressed at her funeral, then I'd be damned if I was going to allow some random person out there in the middle of no where to tell me that the service was inappropriate. It'd be much more of a mockery if the wishes of the deceased weren't followed. If the family finds it inappropriate, then it was inappropriate. If the family believed in every word and wanted it to be said and heard, then who the Hell are we to tell them they're wrong? Give me an actual statement by some of her kids that they found the sermon inappropriate, or stop trying to tell the family what they should feel. I cant give you any facts- I was only giving my OPINION. do you understand? what i am now saying is a repeat of my last post in response to you. I could be wrong about how they feel, and thats fine, because its MY POINT OF VIEW and THATS ALL. to reiterate, i was not telling the king family, nor anyone else, how to feel. i was only giving my opinion. thats the beauty of free speech, stalin. so no, im not going to give you any quote from kings family or some s*** like that, because i dont have the energy or motivation to go get one, if it even exists. i'll stick with my opinions, like EVERYONE ELSE on this board who isnt being attacked for saying how they stand on an issue. and what is your problem anyway, picking out the 17th person to say what a joke that funeral was for a debate.

why is the official sox site putting this crap in their mailbag? that trade BLOWS. Please someone reassure me that I am as outraged as I should be that the organization is considering that move.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2006 -> 09:45 PM) $35 an hour...for 1 button pusher...times 40 hours per week, times 52 weeks in a year....so you're telling me that GM's health plan costs $72,000 a worker? Um, something tells me you're just a wee bit off in that number. have heard it from the horses mouth, a full UAW member who works at a saginaw plant. he also believes that the CEO of GM should make as much as the lowest paid employee; that every employee should be paid the same- does that ideal remind you of a economic system that failed in the early '90s? edit: i dont find it unfeasible considering the profit GM makes off each car that is sold to a distributor.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 3, 2006 -> 04:08 PM) They could also put enough money into alternative energy research that we'd very quickly be able to implement non-oil energy generation in lots of aspects of our infrastructure. If one of those companies gets smart, they'll plow back a bunch of those earnings and do just that. Why? Because they'd ensure that they'd not only be first and best in those areas, but they'd guarantee their long term future in the energy markets beyond just oil. It's smart for so many reasons. Which is why I can't understand why they don't do more of it. i like your ideas, but i also cynically must call it wishful thinking. i bet the US will drive SUV's until the earth runs out of oil. the automotive and petroleum companies are much too powerful and would never embrace that. seriously though, when the President makes a huge point about it in the state of union adress, and hes an oil man, you know that something has to be done, since they are even admitting the problem (rare).

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 7, 2006 -> 09:34 PM) It's good to know that you are in such a position as to know the exact thoughts and feelings of the king family and lecture all of us about how we should feel from your position of knowledge. Or, alternatively, it's good of you to tell the King family how to feel. They're clearly fools if they feel anything else other than what you say they should feel, and your wise advice will certainly be welcome to them in their time of mourning. put yourself in their shoes. if you had a family relative die, how would you feel if the funeral was turned into a stage for politics(for example, that comment on WMD's by that old reverand; absolutely shameless and unrelated to the funeral)? you apparently would be OK with your realtive's funeral being turned into a mockery. i would not. and i dont need to say after every post that it's just my opinion- that goes without saying for what anyone says on this board unless they link some article or facts with their post. but you're right, i must be as ignorant as you imply, since i dont agree with you.

the reason for the crisis: unions. it costs a minimum of $35 an hour in health benefits alone for a button pusher in a factory. i know this for a fact. how in the hell is a company supposed to survive when they have to pay people that much for a factory job? bottom line, the UAW has been absolutely raping and pilaging every last dime they could squeeze from GM. and now they are paying for it. you reap what you sow, socialists. and im a MI resident who knows people who were laid off, and i still say that.

and the gap between parties widens, and the election is so far away.

spin you however you want, from whatever side of the political spectrum. it was shameless political hackery, and was pretty deplorable. if i was a member of the king family i would have been outraged. stuff like this costs you votes. and for the record, jimmy carter was the worst president in american history (he has a gas shortage and a failed hostage rescue attempt to claim, and thats it).

"Tigers could be dark-horse contenders in '06"
samclemens replied to SSH2005's topic in The Diamond Club
no way. sorry tigers, but you have many a year to go until you contend for anything. not enough pitching, and certainly not enough hitting. their D was never stellar, either. maybe it was opposite day when this guy wrote that. -
and some people wanted to acquire manny this offseason. this just backs up my claim that he is a disease.
