IN ban on gay marriage thrown out by US fed court
CrimsonWeltall replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 12:39 AM) Not to run too far off politics into religion, but I would also point out that churches that take strong political stances against gay marriage are turning people off to religion big time when their mission is supposed to be the exact opposite. I'm not saying that churches should change their religious position on gay marriage, but changing their political position, or at the very least not taking a political position figures to benefit your church more in the long run than yelling and screaming about the issue, to the extent that you don't even care whatever terrible political positions a candidate might take so long as they are against gay marriage. Not only will they change their position, but in 50 years, they'll be saying they were the ones who led the fight for gay rights. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 4, 2014 -> 09:53 PM) Here's the opinion overturning the WI and IN bans, written by Posner (full ruling at bottom of article): http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/wisco...tutiona#1hj1d9c His ruling is basically a direct rebuttal of the "marriage is for biological parents' procreation" argument. Posner destroyed the WI and IN attorneys defending their bans: http://media.ca7.uscourts.gov/sound/extern..._08_26_2014.mp3 -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 11:08 PM) Couple things that bothered me in the first one..... Why is the boy choosing this stranger over his family? I get his initial motive to let the guy in the house, but then once it became apparent that it was either him or them, the kid still decided to help the random guy out. They didn't give the kid any reason for his motives to hate his parents. Why does the sister keep running off and disappearing? These kids aren't 4 or 5 years old. The older sister especially should understand the gravity of the situation. What is the purpose of the boyfriend even existing in this movie? He is dead within 10 minutes and has nothing to do with the black guy entering the house, or the purgers finding the house. He serves no purpose other than to upset the daughter. The whole "It's either he dies, or we die" struggle with the black dude, then once the black dude agrees to die, the dad says "Nah, f*** it, let's put our lives on the line for you." The purgers said they wanted the black guy ALIVE. Yet the dad tells his wife to stab the letter opener in to his wounds a few times to get him to cooperate. Uhhh....how about you hit in in the face a few times? Smash his hand? Do something that won't put his life at even more risk. So the purgers appear to rip down some sort of gate in front of the front of the house. Why does this then disengage all the sealed windows? Right after they rip the gate off, people start crawling in through side windows. How does that make sense? The neighbors come in, slaughter everyone, and then decide to kill the family themselves? Why put themselves in danger? Why not just let the purgers murder the family? It's not like it makes a difference in the family knows that the neighbors hate them right before they are killed. The way way way too predictable ending where the black guy who has been missing for a half hour and has been bleeding out, comes in and saves the day, kicking everyone's ass, and then immediately goes back to being severely injured and dying. Oh, well this is actually hours later once they wait for 7 am to come. So this black guy is bleeding out for about 10 hours or so? That's all I can think of right now. Just a terrible, terrible execution on what I really thought was a cool and fun premise. You have one hour to give us the black guy. We're going to get our top secret, super purge weapon that will destroy your impenetrable security system. It's a pickup truck.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 06:40 PM) I don't think you can argue such a threat existed if we're assuming (for argument) that Wilson fired at Brown while he was fleeing or when he turned around with his hands up. I don't think anyone here would disagree.
-
IF the officer's version of events is substantiated (by those dozen+ witnesses we've heard about, fractured orbital, etc), there's no way he's even going to be charged.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 09:29 PM) Thats simply not enough for me. ...how about 2 separate videos that have absolutely zero rioting in them?
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) Based on what info? Based on the videos, and what the Al Jazeera reporters said. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) Why would the cameras be rolling with nothing going on, doesnt make sense. ...they were filming a news segment. The reporter was in front of the camera with the 2 big lights on him.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 10:14 PM) Thats a hell of a jump. If I am walking through an area where there are riots and I dont listen to multiple warnings about gassing and then get gassed, then it would be more accurate to the scenario. There was no rioting, or even protesting, going on at the time. The police gassed reporters...for being reporters.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) Okay, but that doesn't happen when they're still 35' away. The police SUV was 35 feet away, not Wilson. Wilson was chasing him. I forget where I read it, but I saw one source that said Brown was only 5 feet away when Wilson stopped firing (whether this was due to Wilson continuing to move forward while Brown was surrendering or due to Brown charging Wilson, who knows).

If you don't want to wait until the end of the year, at least wait a week until the end of the month. Dem monthly sales quotas. If you don't like the price they're at, walk away. They HATE people leaving the dealership. I've had salesman suddenly "find" rebate offers and other ways to lower the price overnight.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) I'm not sure. I wonder if the Ferguson PD has any training and certification requirements on hand-to-hand unarmed combat. Based on photos of the two individuals, I wouldn't handicap a fight between the two in favor of Wilson even if he had a police baton.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 06:16 PM) Force, sure, but there's a force continuum. Punching a cop in the face doesn't entitle them to shoot you. If he doesn't have a non-lethal device like a taser, and if Brown is charging him, what other options does he have?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 07:05 PM) also fwiw, a customer at the convenience store called the police, but the owners and the employees didn't. Maybe didn't think it was worth the hassle to report a $20 (or however much some gas stations cigars would be) theft. Would help if we knew more about the nature of the scuffle in/at the vehicle. If Brown was physically violent at that point, and then started coming at the cop again after the short chase, I think he has a reasonable need to use force.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 05:20 PM) What was the basic layout here? I always assumed, and I guess i'm not sure why, that the police vehicle was facing one way, and the shooting and everything happened behind it. Is that totally wrong? Or do we even know at this point? Here's a video taken shortly after the shooting (WARNING: contains dead body). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdL9dqkyjhM All statements indicate that Brown was facing toward the cop when he was shot, so based on his body in that video, I'd say the cop was to the left in the video. The police report said his body was 35 feet from the vehicle, so that's gotta be that first police SUV on the left. I doubt the officer moved his car after the shooting. That SUV's dash cam, if it had one, would have been pointing at where Brown died.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 18, 2014 -> 06:02 PM) Mini-cameras on the shoulders/collars of the officers are going to be the only solution. It's doubtful at this point any officer or "community witness" is either going to provide honest/truthful evidence. How would either side trust the other? We would know what happened if the officer's car had a basic dashboard cam.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:54 PM) Because it's not really a reward for being bad purposefully, it's a reward for being bad period. But it includes teams who are bad purposefully. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 08:54 PM) No 50 win team is tanking the next season to get another playoff piece. The teams that tank are teams that aren't going to be very good anyway. Philly tanking next year is a smart move on their part because there's no way they're making the playoffs. Yeah, it's a smart move because they're going to be rewarded with a high draft pick. If that reward wasn't there, they wouldn't be doing it.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 07:37 PM) I gotta say, I'm not sure why "tanking" is that big of a deal and why the lottery system needs to change. Why reward teams for intentionally being bad? Why should fans be subject to watching teams that lose on purpose?

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 04:39 AM) I honestly almost never used The Bee since I didn't get it until after they nerfed it. I usually rolled with a Sham or an Evo depending on whether I was facing gun-based enemies or not. I did plenty of damage with the slag/Unkempt Harold combo. Pre-nerf Bee was totally broken. Everything went down in an instant.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 07:25 PM) You're right. Beating your wife is not technically against the NFL rules so it makes total sense that the punishment is less severe. I said nothing like that. I was contesting the implication that Mathis got 4 games for something innocent/benign, not agreeing with the 2 game suspension for Rice. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) Look at it how you want, it was prescribed by a fertility specialist and he got off it after his wife got pregnant. He broke the rules and took a banned substance that both masks PEDs and arguably is one itself by boosting testosterone. Even if you believe his story, his ignorance and laziness are not good excuses for breaking PED policies. -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 05:22 PM) Robert Mathis got 4 games for taking clomid to raise his sperm counts so he could have a child. Robert Mathis got 4 games for taking a PED masking agent that was on the banned substances list. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 01:44 PM) So weird that he's on there. The only player not from the 90s on the entire list, and he has 273 career SBs, so he wasn't some slow poke. Right. For one, I figured this was some kind of metric that only applies to modern players because it might require data that wasn't recorded a long time ago. Secondly, ain't no way there weren't more slow guys 100+ years ago when players were far less athletic and smoked like chimneys.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 01:23 PM) Yeah, he's the only one on the list that's even a tad bit surprising to see. Well, him and speedster Cap Anson. How is Cap Anson even on this list?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 13, 2014 -> 07:10 PM) But if you can get drugs in prison and be a kingpin and be a thug, how bad can it be for some of the guys used to a life of crime? You get a good 3 meals a day and a place to live w/out rent the rest of your life. Would you trade all your freedom for free rent (in the world's worst apartment) and 3 crappy meals a day?
