Although I'm not excited about the possibility of Owens in CF, I don't think he's the worst option in the world either. Yes, he has zero power, but.... He has a career .291 BA with a .359 OBP in the minors. If he's able to get close to that at the major league level, then hey.... I'd like more but... I wouldn't complain about that. In regards to his much maligned defense (throwing mostly)... keep in mind that during his time up here in 2007, he was playing with an injured left shoulder. (He ran into a wall in Charlotte earlier in year chasing down a flyball.) So, what we saw throwing wise was not and should not be considered the limit of his capability. The key advantage of having Owens play is that, if he is able to get on base at a decent clip, his speed would be a revelation for this lineup.

Thanks for finding that Jordan4life. Some great stuff in there. Here's one of my favorites quotes from the thread... "People! Gavin Floyd sucks! He will be out of this league in 2 years, book it! He is not the present nor is he ever going to be the future. I've seen him pitch for years and doesn't even deserve a shot in our bullpen. Philly has been dying to get rid of him for years. He got lit up in AAA, they still brought him up, got lit up in the NL, they brought him back down to AAA, got lit up again. And now he is still getting lit up in Winter ball. He's done and Kenny bit on him."

I always liked the Fixx song "Stand or Fall". It had a stupid video, but it's a good song.

Well... for what it's worth.... A Chicago Tribune poll after the McCarthy trade showed that 69.9% of fans thought it was a mistake.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) Not to most whitesox fans, while some really liked B-Mac here Danks was just as good a pitching prospect and threw from the left side and Massett had ability to make an impact out of bp. Ive always been a Danks fan partly because a good friend of mine is a Rangers fan so knew about their system. As for the Freddy deal everyone knew he had nothing left and getting any return was a success, not to mention Gio has always been one of my favorite wsox prospects and I was a big Floyd fan. I think it was the exact opposite. I remember large numbers of WhiteSox fans and media hating both deals when they happened. In fact, KW took an incredible amount of heat for the BMac deal. And most people thought we could have gotten a MUCH better deal for Freddy at the time.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) I can't imagine how we could possibly trade him if he cleared waivers and no one grabbed him. I think he'll be part of a deal, not a stand alone trade. Besides, people clear waivers all the time and still get traded.

My guess is that Mac cleared waivers without anyone claiming him, so they outrighted him to Charlotte rather than releasing him (and eating the contract). All of which leads me to believe he will be traded pretty soon.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) Macdougal was just outrighted to Charlotte. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i belive that's another one bites the dust off the 40. Correct. That reduces the number of players on the roster to 32. 32! Pretty interesting. Makes me wonder which 8 players fill the slots. Official release.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 09:38 AM) 2 - The AFL is a hitter's paradise, so it doesn't really shock me to see Danks doing so well there also. On the other hand... there are alot of supposedly very good hitters in the AFL who were drafted ahead of Danks, or have AA and AAA experience, who are not hitting nearly as well as he is. So... we can revert to the small sample size argument... but just saying he should be hitting this well (.341 BA/.417 OBP) because he's in a hitters league really isn't true.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) Can I ask why everyone thinks Jordan Danks will be ready for a starting job in 2010? I wondered that myself until I saw him. (I went to a few AFL games.) The guy is a freak athlete. Large and fast. I've already heard Sox people suggest that he is the best defensive CF in the Sox system right now. And it appears he already has good plate discipline. If he hits for a decent average in the minors he will move through the system very quickly.

I'd bet my lunch money that Dave Dombrowski has already been on the phone with Wood's agent.

I've read every article on this I can find. Seems that the Sox spin is that they believe... - Marquez is another Gavin Floyd type... a former first rounder who just needs a little Cooper tweaking and a chance to play. - Nunez will be a solid power arm in the bullpen and is only a year away. - Betemit will be a much cheaper veteran utility guy than Uribe... and that he provides security in case Fields struggles at third. If all of the above are true, I could live with the deal. But... I still can't help thinking we could have done better at the winter meetings.

Beckham 2-5 Thursday night. Batting average up to .403... 4th in the league.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 10:21 PM) I'm going out to dinner with my boss/mentor tomorrow and possibly some others in my field. As the girl from Chicago I'll probably be asked to pick the place or have some suggestions. But I haven't lived in the area for nigh on a decade. The conference is at the Hilton on North Michigan. Anyone have any suggestions for places within walking distance. My boss hates pizza so that's out. Thanks in advance. I'd call the concierge desk at the Hilton and ask. I'm sure they get requests like this all the time from business travelers, so they should have a good list of suggestions. (That's what I do when I'm traveling and have to set up a dinner.)

Tampa Bay is absolutely LOADED with young pitching. They have 8 pitchers including current staff and MLB ready minor leaguers who could legitimately compete for starter positions next year. That's obscene. So... possible that some of that could be moved

QUOTE (BearSox @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 10:35 PM) Yeah, he got hitters out, but that was his first time around. He still has a lot more to prove to me, and a lot of other people, before I declare him some sort of phenom. Too late. He's already been declared a phenom.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) yes, but Beckham went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and 2 RBIs. he started a little slow, but he is flatout mashing. Yep. Up to #7 hitter in the league. .396 BA; .484 OBP; 1.126 OPS. Looking very good. I think it will be very interesting to see how he does in spring training.

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 12:35 PM) Sure KW would love that, but JP won't want to come here. Really? He's already stated he'd be willing to play on the northside... so obviously Chicago is an acceptable location. Has he said he wouldn't play for the Sox? I like knightni's customized 3-way deal with the Mets. Good thinking.
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) The Padres need a closer now. Do they have anyone worth trading for? A pretty good starting pitcher. Gotta think KW would just love to trump the Cubs on acquiring Peavy.

Didn't realize there were so many Salukis here. I spent 3 years in Cdale (getting an MBA) in the late 80's. Not sure how I would have gotten through graduate school without Tres Hombres. They used to have a thing called the International Beer Club. Once you drank all 50 different international beers they carried, you'd get your name on a plaque on the wall. It was an elite group. I was very proud when I accomplished that.

Link This is so funny in a sick trainwreck sort of way... Dude wants to sell his car, so he goes to a body building forum board, and posts a few photos. And to entice buyers, he has his ugly girlfriend pose in them. Some of the comments are hilarious.
