QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Jul 19, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) Do we have a Kenny Williams, Jr. watch going? .114 AVG / .279 OBP (fairly good for such a bad average) / .229 SLG. And he hasn't played since June 27th.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 19, 2008 -> 12:10 AM) the other thing with Getz is that it just seems as though he's an Aaron Miles clone. Sort of... only with better speed (Getz is fast) and a higher OBP (on his career, Getz has more walks than strikeouts). Speed, OBP, and his ability to play CF as well as 3 infield positions... I think those three factors could be the keys to his success at the next level. That doesn't guarantee he'll have success as a starter, but he's got skills that should keep him around in the majors.

Yep. Brandon Allen continuing to feast on AA pitching. Hits a 3-run homerun to give the Barons a 3-1 lead in the 4th.

Here are a few interesting stats from the Baron's Game Notes... The Baron's pitching staff is first in the Southern League in ERA (3.58); shutouts (10); fewest homeruns allowed (36*), and fewest hits allowed. They have allowed the 2nd fewest walks. The starters have tossed 45 quality starts this year. Seventeen (17) times, a Baron's pitcher has thrown 6 or more shutout innings. Birmingham, as a team, has thrown out 42% of opposing base stealers (47-111), the best percentage in the league. *The 36 homeruns allowed is about 1/2 of the league average. Pretty impressive.

Charlotte @ Louisville Whisler pitching Charlotte is in 2nd place in the IL-South, 5 games behind Durham. Tonight's opponent, Louisville, is in 1st place in the IL-West Division. Birmingham @ Montgomery Poreda with the start The Barons are in 2nd place in the SOU-South, 2 games out. Montgomery is right behind them, 3.5 games out. Games Notes (pdf) Stefan Gartrell is 26-87 (.299) over his last 25 games. Myrtle Beach @ Winston-Salem Ely on the mound I find it interesting that 4 of the 6 infielders now on the W-S roster are from last year's Great Falls team... Retherford, Paiml, Persichina, and Mollenhauer. There are also four pitchers from that team: Anthony Carter, John Ely, Henry Mabee, and Wander Perez. Charleston @ Kannapolis Rice pitching Kanny has picked it up lately and is now only 3.5 games out of 1st. Wily Mota, one of the two pitchers we got from Boston for Aardsma, was released. Reliver Santo Luis is leading the team with 92 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched. Game Notes (pdf) Orem @ Great Falls Skogley pitching GF shortstop Tyler Kuhn is currently 4th in the Pioneer League in hitting with a .360 average. Outfielder Johny Celis is 7th in the league with a .330 BA. Orem is the top team in the league with a 20-9 record in the Pioneer-South. Great Falls (16-13) is in 2nd place in the Pioneer-North, two games out of first. Johnson City @ Bristol Infante pitching Bristol is in 2nd place in the App-West, 3.5 games out of first. First baseman Jorge Castillo leads the team in hitting with a .368 average. Castillo is 4th in the league in batting average. Bristol is 2nd in the league in team ERA (3.98).

If I was sitting next to someone who booed Konerko, I'd smack 'em with my damn program. I really don't understand the stupidity of booing a struggling hometown hero. It's more than classless. It's pointless and moronic.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) um... did we make a trade that hasn't been announced? Because some guy named Freddie Thon, a firstbaseman who MiLB says is on Bakersfield, supposedly played today for Winston-Salem. And is that Dickie Thon's kid? Don't know if there is a connection to Dicky Thon or not. Freddie was playing for the Joliet Jackhammers in the Northern League when we picked him up. http://www.northernleague.com/cgi-bin/reca...i?id=1212703169

And Allen hits another homerun in his second at-bat!!! Also off of Mr. Untouchable... David Price. Coming into tonight's game, Price was 8-0 with a 1.68 ERA this season and had given up ZERO homeruns all year.
-
Allen hit a homerun in his first at-bat with the Barons!! Off of David Price too!!! Attaboy Brandon!
-
There's speculation on the A's boards that Gio will be called up to take Blanton's spot.
-
Brandon Allen promoted to the Barons.
-
Brandon Allen was promoted to Birmingham.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 11:40 PM) I would imagine that if the Sox needed a short-term middle infielder or if Uribe went down with any injury, Getz would get the callup...if it were a long-term thing to either Alexei or Cabrera, Richar would be called up. Maybe that's wrong though. Jason Bourgeois has re-emerged on the utility-man screen too. He's up over .300 on the year now and has been absolutely unconscious in the last 6 or so weeks. (Batted .393 in June; batting .348 so far in July.) Nice thing about that is that it gives us some choices and depth in case of injury... something we didn't have last year.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 01:35 PM) Anyway, according to the Barons broadcasters, significant and "exciting" roster moves are coming today. They couldn't talk about them last night. Ohh man... Now you've got me hooked. It's going to be interesting to see what they mean by 'significant and exciting' roster moves. More than Loiza making a rehab start there tonight I hope.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) They should have just demoted him and promoted Brandon Allen or C.J. Retherford. W-S is making a playoff push in the second half and Micah could have helped down there. Good point. That would have made alot of sense. I would have flipped places with him and Allen. I really like CJ but I'd like to see him get a whole year in W-S before moving up. He jumped a level to get here and his OBP is suffering for it. I'd like to see him have a second half in W-S and then move up to Birmingham next year with a strong finish under his belt. Brandon's BA has dropped into the .270's but his batting eye seems to have improved significantly. He's got a .370 OBP and he's right around a .900 OPS. It would be very interesting to see how he'd do if he moved up a level. And flipping those two guys (Allen and Schnur) would have been a swap of two guys playing the same position. So why didn't it happen? Makes too much sense.

QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) Can't see it either. I see IBP, when clicked brings me to the home page. Ditto.

I say we sign him if for no other reason than to block the Tigers from signing him. I don't want to see the Tigers acquiring pitching that could help them in a second half run.

The Olympics are from the 8th through the 24th of August. I doubt the Sox have plans for any of our minor league players that would get screwed up by being gone for 16 days in August.
-
He could probably become the starting 3B for the Twins.
-
Watching Alexei's development. Seeing Dye rebound from last year. Having a bullpen again. And Carlos Quentin.

Seems unusual to be thinking "what are we going to do with all these middle infielders?", doesn't it? I like that kind of problem.
-
Logan Johnson hasn't played since July 1st. Probably hurt but I don't remember hearing about it.
-
I'm amused by some of the evaluations of Richard's skills and potential after watching him throw 13 pitches in an all-star game.

Winston-Salem lost 6-4 Not a horrible outing for Ely, but no prize-winner either. 5 innings; 3 runs on 4 hits; 0K's and 3 BB's. Retherford went 2-5 and had 3 RBIs. Allen hit his 14th homerun. Kannapolis beat Rome 8-2 Jason Rice with a very good game. 5 innings; 0 runs on 3 hits; 5 K's; and 1 BB. Miranda went 2-4 with a homerun. Jim Gallagher went 2-4; raising his season average to .270 Christian Marrero went 3-4; also raising his season average to .270. Charlis Burdie, recently promoted to Kanny, closed the game. (Burdie was absolutely lights out at Great Falls striking out 22 in 11 innings.) Birmingham beat Carolina 5-3 Decent outing for Harrell. Very decent considering it's his first AA start since coming off the DL. 5 innings; 3 runs on 7 hits; 6K's; and 3 BB's. Link picked up the win. Check out the season stats for Link. 5 Wins - 1 Loss; 1.69 ERA; 26 saves; 0 homeruns allowed; .208 BAA 37 innings pitched; 36 K's; 16 BB's Nanita and Schnurstein each went 2-4 Javier Colina went 1-3 and had 2 RBIs.
