  1. QUOTE (Wanne @ May 9, 2010 -> 03:56 PM) Did they ever show Beckham's check swing? No, but I thought he went. Didn't seem like a questionable call. Unhappy yes... but not questionable.
  2. Gavin is starting out just like last year. Pitched poorly until mid-May. Then he pitched great for the next 3 months. Hopefully, he turns that corner soon.
  3. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 8, 2010 -> 07:58 AM) 2005-2008 winning pct - .540 (87.5 wins per 162 games) 2007-2010 winning pct - .488 (79 wins per 162 games) If the Sox end up averaging less than 80 wins over a 4 year span, shouldn't KW's job be in serious jeopardy? No. Because it's not a good metric to evaluate what happened. Look at the year by year numbers and the flaw in logic becomes more clear. 2005 - 99 wins 2006 - 90 wins 2007 - 72 wins 2008 - 89 wins (90 if you include one playoff win) 2009 - 79 wins 90-wins is a pretty good measure of a quality team/season. And the Sox have reached 90 wins in 3 of the last 5 years. The only year in which we were truly "bad" was 2007. People seem to forget, that last year, we were only 2.5 games out of 1st going into the last week of August. So... no... using rolling 4 year averages (to evaluate the last 5 years) does not make a compelling argument for a GM to lose his job. Especially when year by year performance numbers suggest he's fielded a pretty competitive team 4 out of the 5 years.
  4. This is a high school story, not college... but I thought it deserved to be noted. http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1082543 Nicolaus (Calif.) East Nicolaus pitcher John Kukuruda threw his fourth-straight no-hitter on Friday night, breaking a long-standing California state pitching record. There's more of the story at the link above.
  5. Pin this game on Ozzie. If he put Thornton in to start the 9th, this game would have been over 3 innings ago with a White Sox win.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 7, 2010 -> 02:36 PM) If someone ran out on the field and was beaten with a baton, you would think of that as an appropriate response? And would the answer change if he was wearing a Cubs hat?
  7. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ May 7, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) Is it wrong if me if I would actually like to see a child run onto the field and get tasered? And is it wrong of me if I would actually find it hilarious? Yes.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 7, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) And having video of himself flailing at balls 6 feet out of the strikezone in the big leagues in September might help. That's one of the reasons I'm happy to see him in AAA this year (rather than repeating AA). He needs work on offspeed stuff and strikezone recognition... And AAA is full of guys with offspeed stuff they can't throw for strikes. It's a perfect marriage.
  9. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ May 7, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) I don't know if you guys have already seen this, but it made me throw up a lil bit in my mouth... A Steal? I like it. If they perceive that past trades with us worked out well for them, it should make future trades easier.
  10. There's a saying in Cuba that translated means... "Are you stupid or are you from Pinar del Rio?" Alexei is from Pinar del Rio.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2010 -> 07:20 PM) How do you see Shelby III's prospects at this point? I know he has always been one of your favorites... I like his tools especially his combo of speed and power. Worried about his swing and plate discipline. He's too inconsistent... And at 25 in AA... the clock is ticking. If he doesn't have a good year offensively in 2010... That will be bad... for him.
  12. I'm really not a big fan of looking at a guy's stats as a determinant of potential, until after he reaches AA. As far as scouting goes, I'll defer to the Braves' scouting staff. They drafted him in the first round. They don't miss on too many low round picks. Regarding power... he's young... got good size... a projectable build... and great bat speed. I'd be willing to bet that the power will come. He's making much better contact so far this year. If he's able to keep it up (fingers crossed), I think we'll see the power numbers start rising.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 6, 2010 -> 05:01 PM) I still like Short the most of any position player on that team, although legit arguments can be made for others. IMO, Gilmore is definitely the most talented player on that team.
  14. Eduardo Escobar is 8 for 18 over his last 4 games. Season average up to .270 now.
  15. Nathan Jones had a 2-hit shutout going through 6 innings. Gave up 3 runs in the 7th... and WS went on to lose 5-4.
  16. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 6, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) Oooh, I need to make me some kids... Rent them. It's much easier and less expensive.
  17. Eric Byrnes has found a new team. He's playing in a recreational softball league for a team sponsored by Dutch Goose... a burger and beer pub in Menlo Park, CA. LOL Sounds like fun actually.
  18. I thought Kenny and Boras kissed and made up over the winter (during the Damon discussions). And besides he owes us one for giving Andruw Jones a shot at regular playing time.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 5, 2010 -> 10:20 PM) I read somewhere that he had a personal issue or something that he talked to the team about. Yep. He went to management after his latest meltdown and asked for help. First time he's actually fessed up to having a problem.
  20. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 5, 2010 -> 07:00 PM) "My Team" W-S currently in progress. Up 1-0 so far. Escobar so far 2-2. Short, Escobar, and Gilmore... all only 21 years old. I like it.
  21. QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ May 5, 2010 -> 09:28 PM) Phil ain't coming back. X1000 Nice idea to think he'd come back. Proving the existence of Sasquatch and Unicorns is much more likely.
  22. Cleveland has now had 5 consecutive games where 10 or more Indians batters have struck out. First time that has happened in their history. Ouch. That has to be frustrating to watch as a fan.
  23. Back to talking about minor league outfielders... Brandon Short is on a 22-game hitting streak... The longest current streak in all of minor league baseball.
