I agree with pale sox. Trades, much like everything else in the world (but that's another argument), are not dualistic. Saying 'the cardinals won the trade' implies that they are.

Picking 5 seasons arbitrarily really makes a huge difference for the white sox and probably quite a few other teams.

Appraisers estimate the value of a home almost entirely on recent past sales, not future projections. They still do that, and its not the sole fault of either entity.
