  1. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:27 PM) So what are Sox fans suppose to do oh wise one? Complaining about the current state of team precludes the want of the team to rebuild? Makes sense. Why not try to win? If they lose, they are in the same place they would be if they do what you are suggesting, just with a bigger payroll, and you aren't signing the checks so that shouldn't matter. The evidence points to about 10 years or more of being horrible if you really want to rebuild, and then you still may have problems.
  2. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:28 PM) What's a better alternative? I alrady pointed it out. The pitching is fine. There will be plenty of money to use to acquire hitters through trades and free agency.
  3. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:20 PM) It was a generic time frame. Ok, so maybe it's five years. I don't care. It's amazing how critical everyone is on this board over posts. Wow. It's amazing how many complain that the Sox suck, but then only want them to be worse, and given the current state of the Sox farm system, and what their veterans would bring back in a trade, 5 years is way too optimistic.
  4. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 13, 2013 -> 06:11 PM) We don't have an ML-caliber offense. Tearing down is the only way to become a yearly contender. I will gladly take 2-3 years of crap in order to have sustained success rather than years of mediocrity. Can you point out some examples of total teardowns that led to "sustained success" 2 or 3 years later.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ May 13, 2013 -> 05:34 PM) Stephen A. Smith talking courtside about how Derrick Rose is hurt...Derrick is seen shooting threes RIGHT behind Stephen A. Stephen A was saying before this series that it would be disespectful to the Heat for Rose to come back against them. He was being serious. He is just as big of clown as Skippy.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 12, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) Have you seen Upton's stats? Don't you think a lot of NL teams believe he might do better back in the senior circuit? The White Sox are never going to take on an extra $42.5 million commitment for Upton. Maybe it's not $30 million we would be asking for, but there has to be a number between 0 and $30,000,000 that would satisfy both parties (at some point soon). It is a small sample size. Dunn has those same stats in 2011, the last 4 months of 2012, and 2013. At least Upton can run and field. Put it this way, anyone a team would be willing to trade for Adam Dunn, and send money, you probably want no part.
  7. Why would the Braves trade for a guy who is worse than the guy they are trading and send money back? If Rick Hahn can get rid of Adam Dunn's contract, he deserves a lifetime contract.
  8. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ May 12, 2013 -> 10:47 AM) BS. Had the Santos and Quentin trades went right we'd be able to acquire any bat on earth. Nestor Molina had absolutely ridiculous stats the year we acquired him. Looked like a KW steal. My point is that I think his strategy IS sustainable. His stats were ridiculous, but he wasn't considered a top prospect with Toronto. I do agree, his approach was sustainable. The White sox haven't produced a bat in almost a decade and they still were contending. If guys were just average offensively thus far this year, we would be talking about who they would be adding to make a run at Detroit. As long as you have some projectable arms, teams will dump payroll eventually and will take some lottery tickets in exchange for payroll relief.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:46 PM) We're just about the worst, and this year hasn't exactly gone well so far for our minor league system. I don't think he was hired with the thought of having "just about the worst". I see very little trending upward with the Sox farm system right now. This system does a good job of developing pitchers in the minors and preparing them to succeed in the big leagues. The downfall is that they couldn't develop an offensive player from the system if their life depended on it. In additon to his lack of devopment, he also reccommendef Teahen and Keppinger. It is alright to be wrong occassionally, everyone is. He just is never right.
  10. The White Sox trying to win still left them in position to draft Sale, and they could have drafted Trout. The Cubs tank and it looks like Appel is going to be their pick. Who would you rather have?
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 02:31 PM) I only want changes IF they improve the team, Dick Allen. How does losing Ramirez on a waiver claim improve the team?
  12. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 11, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) I'm curious what this would look/sound like...would it be an Ozzie Guillen throw-his-players-under-the-bus moment, or some other public display? Because it's hard to gauge what it would be otherwise if it's not something made public. The Sox continue to be one of the few (if not only) teams that performs infield practice every week, even on the road. This is what I don't understand. First off, no one here knows what Robin and his staff say to these players, and secondly since when does yelling, making scenes and publicly calling out players work? We had that, and the same problems. If the White Sox don't get better players, any manager the could ever have would be seeing the same things.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2013 -> 02:00 PM) The fact that the players are continuing to struggle with basic fundamentals, seemingly nothing happens in response...and the team itself continues making mistakes that should have been fixed in February...is at the very least disconcerting regarding his current leadership techniques. BS. They take more infield and outfield and do more drills than any other team. Guys don't drop balls, or boot balls, or overthrow the cutoff man or forget to cover home on a passed ball, or try to backhand a pitch 2 feet to their left because of the manager. This is a systemic problem. As Ozzie used to point out, players should know how to play when they get to the major leagues. White Sox prospects for years have looked like they just took up the game a few weeks prior to their call up. I do agree with Marty on Buddy Bell. He IMO, is the most overrated baseball man in the game. He was a really good player, but has nothing to show for the genius he is credited for being since. When he managed, his teams were terrible. Not necessarily his fault, but they all were better the year before he took over, and the year after he left. He has been a big shot with the Sox minor league system. I don't think he would win any awards for that. He talks up all of these prospects,a nd they all seem to fall on their faces.
  14. I don't understand why Marty wants to get rid of Ramirez's contract. Doesn't Chairman Reinsdorf make enough money?
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 11, 2013 -> 11:53 AM) Let the record show that we can't blow anything up because there's nothing in the minor leagues that's going to be any better. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Ventura. With guys like DeAza and Rios and their lackadaisical play this year...we don't have any viable options in the minors who are deserving or meriting full-time play. Although, let the record also show that DISCIPLINARIAN is not the first word that comes to mind with Ventura (it wasn't with Ozzie, either). And this isn't like the Pierre/Viciedo and Lillibridge/Dunn (2011) debates...it's Jordan Danks and D. Wise. Neither of those guys are part of the future of this organization. They're the final player on the roster of a very good team, but not both of them...one would be in the minors or released...or expendable, like Conor Gillaspie. How do you know how Robin deals with players? I love how everyone thinks if a guy isn't ranting and raving he doesn't care and has no control. There are all different kimds of leaders. Robin by all accounts from people who actually know, happens to be one.
  16. QUOTE (flavum @ May 11, 2013 -> 10:34 AM) What I would do... Keep Chris Sale and Hector Santiago Since they aren't going to compete in 2013 or 2014, try to make good deals with the rest of the roster--not necessarily trading all of them, but listen on anyone else on the roster, and try to build a winner for 2015--but also have an organization in place that's better suited to compete every year. Hopefully over the next couple years, some of the players the Sox drafted come along, Erik Johnson, Scott Snodgress, Chris Bassitt, Chris Beck, Micah Johnson, of course Courtney Hawkins, Trayce Thompson, Keenyn Walker....and then further along some of the international signings they made last year get in the system and produce some fruit. In my opinion, it's time for the Sox to take their medicine for a couple years (not five). Keep in mind this will be five years without the postseason, and the Sox are a coin flip away from not making the postseason since 2005. So whatever they've been doing hasn't worked. As far as the front office, I'm not down on Hahn yet. It's an incomplete grade at this point. I wish Kenny Williams would leave the organization, so there's a clear decision maker in Hahn. And of course Ventura will be out after 2013 or 2014. I'm hoping he steps aside after this season. I do agree KW needs to go for Hahn's sake. If you want him to be the GM, let him be the GM. KW may not be interfering in anyway, however, his presence and veto power, even if he would never use it, has to affect Hahn in some way.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 07:42 AM) No quick fixes here. First step is to get rid of as much money as possible (and Buddy Bell.) 1. Get rid of Buddy Bell. 2. Release Gimenez, bring up Phegley. See if either him or Flowers can be at least a back up catcher. 3. Put Ramirez on waivers, hope someone picks up that contract, replace him with Keppinger. 4. Deal De Aza, Rios, Peavy for certain. Put Danks in CF, Viciedo in RF. Heck, put Dunn in LF if for nothing else to keep him in shape. 1 and 2 make sense. The others........you obviously want the Sox to be the Astros.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ May 10, 2013 -> 09:45 PM) Bulls just haven't had a single thing go their way. I'm really enjoying Van Gundy tonight. Calling a spade a spade. Thibs is his former assistant.
  19. Hamilton has only homered vs. the Astros this year.
  20. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ May 10, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) Also, kind of funny that another report I saw on some no name pitcher, the scout says "Has above average velocity (88-89 mph)". Lol, back in 1985, high-80's was above average? Pitchers were using PEDs probably more frequently than position players. Also, many of the guys who you might think or the stadium gun shows throw in the low 90s, aren't really. They are juiced up a bit. Also, if it were a HS pitcher throwing in the high 80s, they would probably project him to get into the 90s, and finally, yes, back 30 years ago or so, there were only a few guys on a staff that threw 90+. Now it's just the opposite. Guys are throwing harder these days, no question about it.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 8, 2013 -> 06:18 PM) By the way, who would actually want to see the Twins play, compared to about 20-25 other teams in MLB? If those were the numbers against the Red Sox or Yankees, you'd have a much stronger point. Yet you talk about the sky falling when the Sox attendance in April when it's 35 degrees against Seattle and, yes, the Twins, is around the same amount.
  22. This team just needs to score runs. They played TB, Texas, KC and the Mets, all of whom had their aces at one point, and were .500 against them despite hardly being able to score. They have scored the fewest runs they have scored through the first 30 games since 1968. If they can get some offense, despite what Andrew thinks, this is a good team. If they continue to hit like they have hit, they will get buried.
  23. QUOTE (Andrew @ May 8, 2013 -> 11:37 PM) This a fan-board, right? If you have to ask, you're full of s*** too. Go to WSI. I invest in the Sox, year in, year out. Ok by you, Caulfield? For a guy who has all the answers, why are you wasting your time on a message board? Clearly, you should be running a team.
  24. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 8, 2013 -> 02:36 PM) Ramirez is batting 2nd tonight! NO Keppinger! Gillaspie clean-up!! Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's just the lack of success, but Keppinger's effort hasn't impressed me this season especially for someone described as scrappy. To me he appears to be mailing it in, content he got paid.
  25. QUOTE (bmags @ May 8, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) The strike kind of killed baseball good will in mid 90s. It wasn't the reason the Sox didn't have this "sustained success" that apparently is a requirement.
