As long as you catch the ball before you fall out of play its OK. Once you are out of play, and I believe that means making contact with a seat or the ground or whatever the ground rule, you are out of play. You catch a ball while you are out of play, it doesn't count as a catch.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 02:28 PM) At that point I dont know why he didnt jump over and catch it in the bullpen. He had time. That would still be points for the White Sox.

QUOTE (Utah Sox Fan @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 02:24 PM) Showing some power in this line up that I didn't know we had, especially if Flow-Tyla can keep it up. Good show. Viciedo, Flowers and Dunn biggest offensive tool is HR.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) Your source contacted me and said otherwise. That was a pretty good comeback.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 01:08 PM) Has Alford ever apologized for his "mistake" of trusting Pierce and for the statements he made to the press at the time that amounted to calling the victim a liar? I'm sure a lawyer would advise him not to say another word.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 12:48 PM) From the official report on the matter. sick f*cks That says they wanted her to meet with with Pierce. Where is the stuff about Alford telling the AIA guy what to do?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) How does the girl being an athlete have anything to do with a fake prayer meeting? Was Alford at this fake prayer meeting and who is the source regarding the info ?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 12:20 PM) Right, so trusting Pierce was a mistake that is completely forgivable. Issuing a statement that you support your players, believe he is innocent and that an investigation will clear him is a 100% reasonable thing to do. But, uh, you keep forgetting a critical part. You know, the part where Alford decided to pressure the girl into silence. The part where he tried to prevent a legitimate investigation into a sexual assault from taking place. The part where he abused his power and position to attempt to silence the voice of a victim. The part where he was a moral monster. That is his mistake, not trusting Pierce. Plenty of people believe friends and family members to be innocent without trying to silence the alleged victims, because that is an unquestionably s***ty and immoral thing to do. I really hope you have some sort of blinders in this case and don't actually think Alford's actions are legit simply because he "trusted the wrong person" when applied broadly. Because that's a pretty f***ed view. One other thing to consider is the girl was a student/athlete. The athletic department probably was more involved because of it. I don't find his actions legit, I believe he should have stayed out of it, let the others handle it,but he cared about his player and knew if he was convicted of this crime he didn't believe his player committed would ruin the guy's life. If you think a person close to you is being falsely accused of rape, wouldn't you think the person accusing them is lying? But again, it all came down to trusting what Pierre Pierce had to say. If he truly thought he was lying, he would have thrown him off the team. Why isn't Bernstein going after the University or the AD? They didn't even throw him out of school.

QUOTE (IowanSoxFan @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:04 AM) Today seemed like a good day not to go to class. That was a typical day when I was in college.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 12:13 PM) Oh shut up. Dick is not "questioning Bernstein" here, he's trying to make excuses for Alford's actions. He's trying to tell me his only mistake was trust. I don't even have to bother to find a post a page or two back to quote because he does it right after yours! Bulls***. You said his "only mistake" was trusting Pierce. When I called you out on that, you stood by it. No, his major mistake was pressuring the girl to keep quiet. Not that he trusted the player until proven otherwise--I don't think anyone would really give one s*** about that. This is specifically about his actions to cover this up. Regardless of whether or not he believed Pierce or now regrets the incredibly s***ty actions he took is not relevant to your claim that "the only" mistake was trusting Pierce. You only confirm this again with your last line, as if the only reason he's criticized is for believing his player. Even when denying that you're excusing his actions, you can't help but try to excuse his actions. And why did he pressure the girl? Because he trusted and believed Pierce which turned out to be a huge mistake. Pierce was immediately suspended after he was charged and did sit out a season.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 11:59 AM) But other folks like Dick Allen are trying to justify actions taken to silence a rape victim because 'trust' I'm not trying to justify it, and as I stated if you asked Alford to give you an honest answer, he would regret having any role in that, but Alford believed his player was being accused of something he didn't do. Hard to believe I'm sure. Only time it's ever happened, I'm sure. If believing someone who turned out to be lying to you makes one a scumbag, everyone is a scumbag.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 11:17 AM) Yes it was. Alford: PP, did you rape this girl? PP: No, coach! She's just lying! Alford: Are you sure? PP: Yeah, coach! Alford: Whew! I thought we had a real problem here! I'll just get the christian athlete association to tell this liar to keep her mouth shut. Steve Alford: Moral coward, or dumbest man on the planet? You decide! False accusations, especially college-aged women for that particular crime are pretty common. But I'm glad you have the scoop on how the conversation went. Alford has at least one daughter. If you really think he would trade rape for a few wins, IMO you are way off. He trusted his player, something that if he didn't do, and Pierce wound up innocent, he would have been ripped for that.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 10:53 AM) LOL, yup, Bernstein is likely a scumbag because he calls out known scumbag Alford. I am not saying that just because of Alford. It was mentioned he calls out a lot of people. It is not uncommon those types of guys are pretty sleasy when it comes to their own personal business.
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 10:39 AM) Because it's not as topical anymore. Good summary. He's covered a lot of areas. It's not just against Alford. This too will pass, Alford apologists. Well, there is the Rutgers coach. If Bernstein is such a moral guy, and questionable behavior bothers his so much, sports really shouldn't be his bag. Usually, the holier than thou guys in real life turn out to be the biggest scumbags.
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 10:32 AM) A pretty good amount of time. They were all over him for 2 weeks leading up to it. Why did he stop? ESPN hired Lewis. ESPN radio is a direct competitor to Bernstein. He should go on and on about it everyday.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 10:28 AM) Bernstein is always overdramatic, that's his thing. But it seems like this is a consistent issue for him, the abuse of power in the sports world to cover up incidents like this. How has his rants changed things other than he gets to hear himself talk?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) Using a large media platform to bring up the issue again and again (Penn State, Stuebenville, Alford) is "doing something" How much time did Bernstein spend on Ray Lewis? Considering the things his 70 year old partner says, it's pretty hard to use that show as a platform for morals.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) As is every media outlet that ever reports on anything ever. Which is it, is Bernstein ranting for hours about some dumb topic largely irrelevant to the Chicago media base he serves, or is he making $$$ off of bringing this issue up? I think he's doing both. He's trying to appeal to the rest of the country and gain notoriety or whatever, with his moral stance on an 8 year old story, 2 Steve Alford hires ago, at the expense of his local listeners, who would rather be discussing or listening to other things.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:37 AM) Bernstein appears to have a personal agenda against Alford. So what? Opening day, the final four, the Blackhawks, the Bulls, Collins to NU and Bernstein talks in Chicago about Steve Alford going to UCLA, probably in the back of his egotistical mind thinking he can derail Alfords new job by rehashing 8 year old stories. No wonder sports radio is horrible.
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) Except he didn't throw him off the team when he pleaded guilty. Oh, and in the meantime he told the victim to shut the f*** up to try to protect the program. THAT'S the problem. No he didn't. He believed Pierce to be innocent, because that is what he was told. Maybe it was naive, and probably if you asked Alford, after what occurred later, he would regret he believed him. People plead down all the time to avoid possible jail and expensive trials, sometimes they were guilty sometimes not.
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:31 AM) Why should a radio station in Chicago care about it? LOL. Because it's a sports radio station? Are they limited to Chicago talk only? Again, big story because he went to UCLA now. People are learning a lot more now than when he was at Iowa or New Mexico. I guarantee a ton of people had no clue about a lot of it when they announced the hire. Unless someone has a personal agenda against Alford, his hiring at UCLA is about as much of a non story in Chicago as it was when he was hired at New Mexico and even less of a story as it was when said incident occurred when he was at Iowa and the player involved was from suburban Chicago.
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) Yeah, that wasn't the biggest problem. This wasn't someone giving benefit of the doubt (IIRC he pleaded guilty anyway). He pled down to a misdemeanor avoiding any chance at jail time.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:27 AM) Alford's problem wasn't that "he believed his story," jesus christ. Yes it was. If he thought he was guilty, he would have thrown him off the team, and none of this crap would have ever happened, and which he did when the second incident occurred which wasn't as serious, and Pierce told him he was innocent again.
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 09:13 AM) Alford's his friend or something, so yeah, let's do anything to make Bernstein look like the bad guy. It's a story worth revisiting since he's at UCLA now, one of, if not, the best program in the country. Do you think UCLA had the info when hiring him? Why should a radio station in Chicago care who UCLA hires as a basketball coach? There are scumbags being hired left and right in the NCAA, professional sports, etc. His own station hired Dan McNeil who has had several problems over the years. Did he go on a rant about him? I don't want to minimilze what Pierre Pierce did. Alford's problem was he believed his story. If it were someone you were close to and believed his story and realized what a false accusation could do to his life, isn't it at least possible what Alford did wouldn't seem so outlandish? False claims are made every day, especially college aged women. Unfortunately for Alford, this wasn't a false claim.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 3, 2013 -> 08:26 AM) He doesn't forget. Nor should he in this instance. I'd say he's just "looking for pub" if he hadn't been consistently after Alford for the BS he got away with from the onset. And Bernstein was also ahead of the story with regards to Penn State. How dare the man have some conviction in his profession - especially with regards to sexual assault! His rant isn't as much about Steve Alford, because if it was, he wouldn't have ignored it the entire time Alford was at NM, it's about getting Dan Berstein's name in the paper, on the internet, and on TV.
