Forbes: Sox Worth $692M
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 07:38 AM) Don't you think that $23M could have gotten them a division title if it was used last year? Depends on how it was spent. Where are you with the Sox? You complain they give Ramirez and Danks their contracts, then complain they don't hand out more of the same. I do agree, if they chose, they could spend more and not go broke. The only source that ever has stated they break even is the White Sox, and they certainly aren't going to mention while they play in a publicly funded stadium with a sweatheart deal and fans that complain about everything, that they are turning a decent profit year after year. I also think the payroll is at a level now, where it is reasonable for them to win.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 03:15 PM) I just dont trust Thibs to play Rose for 5-10 minutes and watch the Bulls lose. He just has not shown the ability to rest injured players. I don't think you are being realistic if you really think Thibs would undercut the medical staff and play Rose more than his limit. He's not an idiot, and if the Bulls trusted him like you trust him, they should hire a different coach.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) True, but my point is that Howard was cleared to play and obviously judging by his play, wasn't really healthy. cleared by doctors =/= healthy I and most people understand Rose won't be 100%, but his doctor even said playing small minutes in real games is the last part of his rehab. If he isn't playing games, he's going to have a tough time getting to the level he apparently, if everything is straight about his rehab, needs to be at. Even if he waits until next season.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) He knows his body better than anyone of us do. He'll eventually return and I hope it's next season he doean't feel "pressured" to come out of the gate wlite like some of you guys think he will. I can't wait to see him in training camp! I think he falls behind in his rehab if he doesn't get into games this year. As I've stated, there probably are other forces besides Derrick and what he feels his body is telling him. Maybe it is his brother, maybe it's not. Maybe it's Adidas. Maybe it's the Bulls. If his body is telling him not to play, why is he scrimmaging and playing one on one in practice? There is something more than his knee feels a little funny when he's going to his right. We probably will never know the entire truth.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) and this is from his supposedly loyal fan base... He'll come back when he's ready, you guys realize that it'll take more than just a dozen or so games for him to get close to his MVP level (if he ever get's there after the major injury he had). It's a long process and he might not even make the Bulls better while he's getting his game back. He isn't going to turn this roster into a legit contender by himself. He couldn't a couple of years ago when the Bulls were better and the Heat weren't as good as they are today. I don't want us to risk our franchise player's career just because I want to see him out there. Of course T would love for him to be playing right now but if he isn't feeling it physically or mentally, I'm willing to be patient until he thinks he's ready. All this silly stuff will blow over when he finally does come back...and he will. The problem is playing in real games is part of his rehab. He doesn't want to take that step for some reason. Watching some of the clips of him practicing, and some of the comments for those who have seen him, there doesn't seem to be much reason he shouldn't be moving on to the next part of his rehab. The longer he sits, the higher the expectations when he does return.

2013 Spring Training catch all thread
Forbes estimates the Sox are worth $692 million and says they profited about $23 million before taxes, etc. last season. They have the Cubs worth $1 billion and say they profited more than any other team last year at about $32 million. Not bad for 100 losses.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 01:25 PM) Re: Rose I couldn't see a team risking it with someone of Rose's ability, but do NBA teams have repercussions for players they feel are "milking it"? The longer this goes on while he continues to scrimmage in practice tells me there is more to this. I really think insurance policies may be dictating when he will return. The Bulls know they aren't going to win this season. They aren't going to sell any more tickets. Maybe having someone else pick up Rose's salary this year is motivation. And who knows if Adidas has some sort of insurance against Rose missing a full season. Since he's been practicing, and practicing well for a while now, it is absurd he hasn't suited up for a game, unless there is something else in play.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 12:35 PM) First time ever as a head coach and you start in the Big Ten...with the worst facilities in the conference. Good luck Mr. Collins. Wonder how Crawford feels about the Champaign-Urbana area. I actually think this isn't a bad choice for either party. If Collins can get NU just to the tournament, he's a success, and he will get some time to do so. NU needs a guy who can recruit. Collins has a name, is young, and probably really willing to go all out recruiting. I think Carmody was a pretty good coach for NU, but this hire is definitely worth a shot. I don't think they will ever become a consistant power, but all they need is a successful couple of years for Collins to be considered a huge success. If Chris has anywhere near the baskeball IQ of his dad, he should be pretty good with the X's and O's.

We often mention it with baseball contracts, but odds are, Rose's contract is insured with the Bulls and maybe even Adidas. I wonder if that is playing a role in the delay.

2012-2013 NBA thread
What I don't understand about Rose is that by all reports, he is scrimmaging and dominating in practice. I know real games are an entirely different thing, but if he doesn't trust his knee enough to try it in real games, how is it he is apparently trusting it enough to practice? I do think Steve is correct when he says Rose doesn't want to come back until he is ready to dominate. I just wonder how he's going to come to that conclusion if he hasn't yet. It's not like he's going to be able to get anything closer to real game situations in the summer than the current practices. I also think Rose is totally misguided if he is being swayed by anyone (Adidas, his buddies, Reggie........) other than the Bulls. He should listen to them. This is the team that limited Michael Jordan, the greatest money maker of all-time. They wouldn't force him to try something before he's ready.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) What kind of ticket do you need to buy to have access to the patio area above the bar in right field? I think that is being upgraded to an all you can eat group area this year. Maybe on days they aren't booked the $10 deal applies. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/cws/ticket...party_porch.jsp

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) But you understand that doesnt put you near the talent level of the contenders in the conference. It looks good compared to other Iowa classes but compare that to what Crean is bringing in. Its night and day. At this point its a better goal to finish in the top half of the conference I dont think theres much of a chance of actually competing for a regular season title. If they knew how to close out games, they would have finished in the top half of the conference and contended for a title this year. They didn't get it done, and obviously a year of experience isn't a guarantee they will learn how, but I'm thinking a year older will help them immensely, especially since they are only losing a reserve. A pretty good reserve, but what is coming in should be better than that.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 01:38 PM) Its just hard to convince people that X team is going to be a Big 10 contender, when OSU, MSU and Wisconsin have been there every year for the last what 10 years? You add in Michigan and Indiana, and its just pretty brutal to get to the top. Not saying Iowa wont, just that its a steep hill to climb to go from the middle to the top Obviously the only way to convince anyone is to actually do it. We will see. I think McCaffery has positioned them to be really good in coming seasons.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 01:02 PM) How so? Iowa is nowhere to be found in the top 50 recruiting rankings for the past forever. 2012 was a nice class but still isnt in the same realm as the top classes for conference foes. Compare that with OSU, IU, MSU, Michigan and even Illinois. Last year they ranked in the top 50. White, Basabe and Marble are all really good players. Maybe not lottery picks, but guys that can win you games. If no one transfers or flunks out, if Woodbury gets stronger and plays anywhere near someone 7'1", they will contend for the Big Ten title next year. If they could have closed out games this year, the only team they really couldn't or shouldn't beat was Michigan. Peter Jok was rated #10 prospect in the country by Van Coleman, and they have Uthoff coming to play next year as well. McCaffery is really turning that program around.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) They have an outside shot next year if there are a lot of early departures across the Big 10 which is possible (would require Zeller, Oladipo, Thomas, Harris, Burke, Payne, etc. to all go pro). But their chance of winning the Big 10 would more be a result of the conference being bad than Iowa being really good. They will be really good next year regardless of early departures. Of their 9 conference losses this year, 7 were by 4 points or less. Their conference tourney loss was by 3, so 8 out of 10 by 4 or less, starting 3 freshman a sophomore and a junior most of the season. As Al McGwire used to say, the best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores. There is reason for a lot of optimism as they only lose 1 player, and gain a couple of guys who are supposed to be pretty good players.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 26, 2013 -> 11:37 AM) Hire someone from the Matta tree, its been fairly successful so far. Chris Jent or Jeff Boals are about ready. As an Iowa alum..........Todd Lickliter? Really? He seems like a nice guy, and probably is a decent enough coach, he was National Coach of the Year at Butler, but you throw him in a major conference, you better not give him too long of a contract or you will be paying him to coach NAIA which is exactly what Iowa is doing now. Stevens is an interesting case. If he ever leaves Butler, the expectations are going to be enormous. It would be interesting to see how he does.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 01:24 PM) I hate that it took a competitive league and made it into an uncompetitive joke. LeBron going to Miami made winning championships and uncompetitive joke, just like the NBA has been almost it's entire existence. It shouldn't stop teams from becoming good. Only 9 franchises have won championships the last 33 years, since Magic and Bird came on the scene.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 12:29 PM) You don't need to be personally invested in him/the Cavs to see what an asshole the guy was. No one would have questioned him leaving the Cavs. It was the bulls*** parading around the country getting other teams to beg for him that pissed me off. Especially since it was all for show. It was all for attention. He knew where he was going before FA hit. Unlike Wade and Bosh, who went on a country-wide tour, at least several teams, Bulls included, went to LeBron in Cleveland to sell their proposals. There is no question "The Decision" was a mistake. LeBron would be the first to tell you that. I actually think he's a pretty good guy.

People want it both ways. They criticize players who use their no trade clauses and don't move from contenders to playoff teams, saying they don't want to win, yet they criticize LeBron for moving (and taking less money) to a stacked team.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) Eh, Lebron barely got past the Celtics last year and that was with Wade by his side. His lack of overall playoff success is kind of being downplayed because of last year and the current streak. He won the title last year. If he wins it again, this "overall playoff success" BS is just that. The roster he played with in Cleveland wasn't as good as the roster MJ played with when he couldn't beat Detroit. Of course the first 5 or 6 years of MJ's career, the critics were saying he would never win. LeBron dominated in the finals and is dominating this year. MJ starting winning championships at about the same age LeBron is now. Haters are gonna hate, but LeBron is the best in the game, and one of the best of all-time.
