Game Thread: Sox v. Tigers 3:10pm Sept. 3, 2011
I love hearing Mitch Williams speak about pitching. It seems he's forgotten he couldn't throw a strike to save his life a good part of his career. 544 walks in 691 innings, and he's talking about where he would pitch a guy and walking guys on purpose. LMAO.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 03:36 PM) Yes, because giving up an RBI double to Miguel Cabrera in the first inning is so uncommon. I get what you're trying to do here. While I don't agree with you at all, I can respect your consistency. But does Albert Pujols have to come here and suck for you to recognize that Greg Walker might not be the right guy for the job anymore? I've never seen a fan in my life so obsessed with protecting his team's hitting coach. Why are they getting tagged in the first inning then settling down? They aren't ready to pitch. If the Sox never scored their first time through the line up, you would blame Walker. He's always been the problem according to some. Who are you going to blame next year?

3 games in a row the Sox give up runs in the 1st inning. Why doesn't Cooper have his pitchers ready to pitch?

Rios made a nice play. Maybe he feels like playing today. Hopefully he won't wait until September to feel like playing next year.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 02:13 PM) How has KW behaved like a little kid here? Sure you can criticize him for making a mistake in picking up Dunn, Rios and Peavy. But he gave Ozzie the go ahead to play whomever he thinks can produce the best, contracts and salary be damned. The last time I remember KW saying anything publicly about Ozzie or his coaches was a month or two ago when he said he thought they were doing a good job. Even I got pissed off at KW that time. But KW has been silent in all this latest BS with Ozzie's contract and Cowley's personal attacks. If anyone has been acting like an adult in this latest round of BS, it's KW. And if anyone is to blame for this dysfunctional organization, it all starts with JR and will never change as long as he owns the team. Passive agressiveness. Said he wasn't going to bring up Viciedo because Ozzie wouldn't play him. Making comments about Beckham's swing was out of line. You discuss that stuff in house. It looked to me like KW was laying the groundwork for scapegoats for his failures. You can't doubt KW, while publicly remaining relatively silent, behind the sceen is a total ass. I'll agree, he's handled this Cowley stuff well, but for good reason. He knows his ass is on the line.

Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (Cali @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:21 PM) I was convinced this off-season would result in changes.... After this, I'm not so sure anymore. f***ing JR... There is going to be changes. Of the 3 main fan targets, KW, Ozzie and Walker, at most, IMO only 1 returns. Probably none at this point. I think KW has the best shot, but the JR loyalty thing is a two way street. He's loyal to his investors and they have to be not too impressed with the way KW has spent their money.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) With an MVP season from Konerko, AJ hitting like he is, Buehrle and Humber . . . Lot's of stuff for this group to be a 90-win team. Too many folks wore rose colored glasses before the season started. Not really. The division sucks. You get 18 games against Cleveland, KC, Minnesota and Detroit. Always get 6 vs. the Cubs in interleague. .500 talent should mean several games over .500 with the schedule they play.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) I'm not a PECOTA fan, but It was laughable that people thought this was a 90-win team before the season started. I had them at .500 too and was right. So Ozzie is just doing an average job? He has .500 talent and they are playing .500, correct? Would they be .500 in the AL East or AL West?

Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) Walker is also looking out for his future. He can't be spilling secrets and then expect another team to bring him on board. Even though the extent of his future in professional baseball should be nothing more than a base-coach, who knows what JR has lined up for him. Walker has already stated numerous times when he's done with the Sox, he's done with major league baseball. It may be hard to believe there is a class act with the White Sox sometimes, but he certainly is one. I'm sure the source of the story is Cowley because this comes out the day after he gets pummelled on the radio. Cowley got it from Oney who got it from Ozzie. The "blowing up" of KW begins. Now Cowley is having someone do the dirty work for him.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) 1.) The Manuel teams were largely Schueler creations. 2.) Add Todd Ritchie, Billy Koch, David Wells, Roberto Alomar, Ken Griffey, JR. to Peavy, Dunn, Rios, and Swisher. Only Wells and Swisher did anything after leaving the Sox. Seems like Williams has a knack MLB veterans who are past their useful life. Guillen batted Dunn 4th and Rios 5th into August. A lot of this is on KW, without question. A lot of it is on Ozzie as well. They have behaved like 2 little kids trying to become JR's favorite. Its time for adults to make the White Sox decisions. That means getting rid of both.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 08:48 AM) I truly am getting tired of Reinsdorf sticking his nose in there so much. It seems like Williams has no power whatsoever. He is the General Manager. Let him make the decisions or just have JR become the GM himself. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure DVS's source on this latest thing is Cowley, who probably got it from Oney who got if from Ozzie. Funny how this gets into print the day after Cowley gets scorched on the radio. Maybe its the first strike in Cowley's attempt to "blow up" KW, which really wouldn't be bad IMO, if it won't save Ozzie.

... it's about time
According to the Sun Times, and not Cowley, although he could be ghost writing, Walker and KW got into it recently about KWs comments about Beckham's swing. KW fired Walker but JR smoothed things over. If true, it really makes you wonder what JR thinks of KW's sudden whims and what kind of power he has left. One thing seems certain, it looks like Greg Walker is in his final few weeks as the White Sox hitting coach. Someone else will have to take the blame next year. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...frontation.html

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 04:39 PM) Great post. The bottom line is some people can't handle people who don't agree with them. That's fine with me. Ptatc had a good take on Oz IMO. Yes Ozzie is going to win big the rest of his career. Unfortunately it appears it won't be with the Sox. Dave Martinez lovers will find plenty to criticize once we are 30 or so games into the season. LaRussa ... we all know there will be plenty to criticize there. My guess is when you match up Ozzie with whomever replaces him ... Ozzie will have the better resume and the better future. Ozzie doesn't have as good of winning percentage as a White Sox manager as Gene Lamont. He averages less than 2 wins a year more per year than Jerry Manuel even though the highest the Sox payroll was ranked during Manuel's tenure was lower than the lowest it was ranked during Ozzie's. He averages less than 2 wins a year more than Jeff Torborg even though Torborg worked with the lowest payroll in baseball 2 of his 3 years as a manager. Your love for Ozzie is impressive, but he's not nearly as good or as irreplaceable as you think. Except for actually winning playoff series, and maybe that was all Ozzie or all KW and not the players, the Sox during the regular season have pretty much been the same since about 1990. Even Terry Bevington guided them to 85 wins one season. The PR campain Oney and Cowley have going stating the Sox will slip back to losing 90-95 games while Ozzie collects WS rings if he leaves isn't based on reality. I'd love to see Ozzie deal with Loria. That won't end pretty either.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 07:28 PM) Per MLBTradeRumors Heyman says Chairman Reinsdorf wants to keep both Guillen and Williams "at this point." I would say that's SOP at this point. If they both come back, my season ticketholder partner and I are both ALL OUT. Enough is enough of this nonsense. I sense if one goes it will be Ozzie as JR has pointed out in the past the GM makes the decision on the manager and if the Sox want compensation from Florida, than they have to still at least fake interest in him coming back. I can't see how JR's partners can be too happy with KW spending all their money on dead weight. I think both have to go. If one "wins" their ego is only going to become even bigger.

Speigel vs Cowley on WSCR
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 10:09 PM) There is a big difference between talking about a power struggle and insinuating that Kenny is cheating on his wife. If Cowley reported on everyone in the White Sox organization who has cheated on their wife, he'd wouldn't have to write about anything else. He'd be like Maury with the DNA tests. The thing is, the whole Cowley agenda is confusing. He calls KW a liar, which he may be, but isn't Ozzie a liar? On one hand using the information Ozzie provided, he fought KW to keep Pierre, yet KW forced him to play Dunn and Rios. On the other hand, Ozzie went off about how he made the f***ing line ups, and anyone who didn't like it should go cheer for another team. What is it Oz?

Ian Gac, Carolina league MVP
26 year olds in A ball should put up some numbers. On the other hand, I wonder if Dunn could have hit .220 in A ball this year.

9/2 - Sox @ DET; Danks vs. Ver-Zeus-Der
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) 0-2 and he becomes afraid of the plate. There's a reason guys spend most of their careers in the minor leagues. The Sox have to win the next 2.

Speigel vs Cowley on WSCR
So Cowley said their last fight was when KW wanted to rid himself of Pierre but Ozzie said no. Of course KW backed down and Pierre got hot. The "skipper" would never be wrong. The only reason he played Rios and Dunn and batted them so high in the order was because KW said he had to do that. Is Cowley's tongue so far up Oney's ass he can't even see he's being played?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 08:30 PM) You do realize Thome's last year on the Sox was the option year and was making over $14M. I think he was getting $2M from the Twins. It would almost be disrespectful if the Sox offered Thome that same money. That was an awful lot of money wrapped up in a player that leaves you with very few options and was also having back problems. I still think it was a smart move financially and unfortunately his replacements didn't work out. His success last year had a lot do with how Gardenhire handled him. I don't think how he did as a Twin would translate to the same performance with the Sox especially with Ozzie as manager. If Ozzie would have said yes, he would have signed for about what Kotsay was making.

Exec's believe both Oz and Kenny could be gone
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) What's the comparison between Williams and Schuler? Similar if not worse for Williams. What's interesting is Schueler's best players were left by Himes. KW's best players were leftovers from Schueler. I think Schueler's teams averaged about a win a or 2 a season more if you take into account the strike year and prorate it. Schueler also became very afraid to spend JRs cash. KW has no problem in that department. Schueler wasn't fired though. Manuel was. They both have to go. A clean break, a fresh start. Everyone mentions how loyal JR is. Well, he's more loyal to his partners than anyone else. They can't be happy with the product they paid for.

Exec's believe both Oz and Kenny could be gone
I wonder if Greg and Marty and Joe and Oney realize Ozzie has averaged less than 2 wins a season more than Jerry Manuel and Manuel never had a team ranked as high in total payroll as Ozzie's lowest ranked payroll team. Good riddance Ozzie.

Exec's believe both Oz and Kenny could be gone
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 1, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) Production from Rios and especially Dunn were givens. I also think the Hudson trade hurts Williams here. I think Ozzie making out his line up card for way too long thinking he'd get anything out of those 2 is going to hurt him, as is how he is taking things public. I hope they are both gone.

It did take Viciedo 3 AB to match Dunn's hit total vs. LHP this season.

Williams On Hot Seat Too?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 01:31 PM) Or on the other side of the coin, how many people know any of the details of Kenny's deal? Not many, because he never talks about it. I've read where KW operates on a one year contract that automatically rolls over. Supposedly if he gets let go he gets full pay for a year.

That's White Sox loser
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) Even Ozzir Jr. disagreed with daddy's move to PH Dunn for Lillibridge. Ozzie took a chance exerting his managerial control . If Dunn gets a hit he's looks like a genius but he outsmarted himself and ends up looking like, well ,Ozzie to be kind. Let's hear it people. Get venomous ! Ask Cowley, Ozzie didn't want to pinch hit Dunn for Lillibridge. KW must of called the dugout and demanded it.
