  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:12 PM) Tyler Flowers is pretty freaking awful. He needs Tim Laker to help him out again, as his swing is significantly longer than it was when he was promoted. He was on a hot streak when he came up. He was striking out at a pretty alarming rate for a 25 year old in his 3rd year in AAA up until a couple weeks before his call up. He's always going to have problems with a long swing.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:54 PM) All I was saying is Ozzie should not rip the White Sox or Jerry in his Marlins' press conference, but he could at least explain his hatred of KW, which is what ultimately would be the reason he gets let go if he gets let go. What's wrong with that? And this is my take on why he basically is unwilling to listen to KW at all. Oz IMO thinks he's better than Kenny; I think that is a decent take. That would be real classy, and we all know, Ozzie is nothing but classy.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:50 PM) I hope you are not one of those who think Ozzie is the only problem child on this horrible baseball team and franchise which appears to have not much talent in the minor league system. It's too easy to just blame Ozzeroo. He's not the problem he's the solution. This team is losing despite having perhaps the greatest manager in the game. Loria is going to go broke buying WS championship rings when he brings in Ozzie. Ozzie's greatness is not questioned, I just wonder how you can think a team can finish below .500 with Ozzie at the helm? It doesn't seem possible to me. Ozzie is too good.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:39 PM) Man the Sox stink. Back under .500 after tonight. I'd think they'd stay under the rest of the year. At least the Sox have a few hits off Verlander. Why would they stay there? Ozzie is the manager.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:36 PM) It didn't happen like that. The report out of Venezuela was wrong. Still, Dunn got more money than Martinez. If KW gave Victor the contract instead of Dunn, Dunn probably only has Detroit to go to.
  6. If the Sox don't come back tonight, and lose tomorrow, they will have to win out and Detroit will have to lose the rest they play. The playoffs are not looking good.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:24 PM) Let's see if Ozzie is a man of his word and keeps quiet if he leaves http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,1570904.story Does Ozzie remember the crap he spewed the last time he left?
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:20 PM) That can't be true, or he would have taken the White Sox deal if he really wanted to play for Ozzie. Rational/logical decision-making would say that he could get well oer $2 million+ in 2014 for his services. Maybe there was deferred money or something like that, or maybe he didn't want to play for Ozzie. Funny thing is if the Sox gave Martinez what they gave Dunn, Dunn probably winds up a Tiger.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:15 PM) Lost out on Damon, Cabrera and Martinez because of a dearth of prospects and/or the willpower to get a deal done. You wonder how serious they were about Victor, or if it was one of their "token" offerings like to Rowand or Torii Hunter in which they had a 90-95% certainty they'd come up short but still gets brownie points for trying? The report said the Sox offered 3 years $48 million and Detroit signed him for 4 years $50 million. If it was a token offer, and the report was accurate, they were playing with fire.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 09:02 PM) The irony as well, both Martinez and Cabrera are Venezuelan. And yet Ozzie seemingly never wanted Martinez. Sure, we already had AJ, but by this point in his career, nobody was looking at Victor as more than a back-up/emergency catcher. I pasted a link on another thread, before the Sox signed Dunn they supposedly offered Martinez $48 million for 3 years. He took Detroit's 4 year offer for a couple million more.
  11. Floyd with another Peavyesque performance. Looks like its going to be good for 5 innings, then the roof caves in.
  12. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 06:28 PM) Aren't you dissin' your boy with this post? Absolutely not. Flowers is older than Beckham and swings and misses a lot. Unfortunately, contrary to Soxtalk consensus, the greatest hitting coach who ever lived could not make everyone a great hitter. Flowers has had a tough time making contact. If he doesn't figure out how to make more of it, he's not going to be very good.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 04:15 PM) If they can find someone who would take AJ's full salary, then going with that wouldn't be the worst idea in the world. He's still got an OPS comparable to AJ's despite the low batting average, and there's reason to believe he can get better from here too. Is the reason to believe he will get better the same reason Josh Fields and Jerry Owens were only going to get better?
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 05:32 PM) Or we could have won the division if the GM didn't bring in overpaid stiffs like Dunn and Rios. And waste so much money on Peavy. KW's one sentence in the media how Ozzie was allowed to bench the zillionaires was MASTERFUL in making KW look good. Totally shifted the blame from KW to Oz. Good job, Kenny. If you believe in reality of sports you understand why Ozzie plays Dunn and Rios. Teams have played guys because of their contracts. KW publicly stated that Ozzie didn't have to do that. If privately its something different, why isn't the honest Ozzie popping off about it? Ozzie hasn't been playing Dunn much lately in case you haven't noticed, then when there is a situation where perhaps the Sox can win a game doesn't pinch hit for him vs a LHP whom Adam is hitting .037 against because suddenly in Ozzie's opinion, Dunn has to earn his paycheck. Maybe if Ozzie wasn't so all over the place it would be one thing, but his inconstency shows on a daily basis. The Marlins will spend millions constructing new trophy cases if they bring him in, as Frank Thomas would say, no doubt about it, but his time here is up, and the White Sox will be better for it when he and his knucklehead nemisis KW hit the road.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 04:52 PM) @MDGonzales: Oz said his family is ready for everything So if Ozzie leaves town, Oney is going with him? But Oney says he has his own money, and his own job.
  16. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 05:20 PM) Yeah you win. Cooper sucks. Get rid of him too. Just keep Walker and rebuild around him. I'm glad you see the light.
  17. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 04:47 PM) The point with Betemit is the one and only thing he could do relatively well was hit. But with the Sox, he couldn't even do that. Just another of Walker's failed students. Danks, Floyd, Contreras, Buerhle, Jackson, Vazquez, Jenks, Thornton, Linebrink, Dotel, Koch, Wells, Colon, Loaisa, Peavy, all they could do is pitch and all have gone through extended slumps, at least the pitching equivalent of 50 AB. Its time to get rid of Cooper.
  18. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 04:36 PM) No, it doesn't ruin my post. Paulie went through other periods of extended slumps after 2003. And Paulie did learn a lot because of those extended slumps which is a credit to him. He probably learned more from those slumps than from Walker and look at what he had to go through before he finally figured it out. Although I wouldn't credit Walker with Paulie's current success, even if you insist on doing so it would prove the exception to the rule. Walker has a track record of watching his hitters go through extended slumps. Walker's body of work includes the sub-par results from his hitters like Rios, Dunn, Swisher, Betemit, Uribe, Beckham ..... Name one player who doesn't go through an extended slump. Just one. How about guys like Thome, Dye, Rowand, Podsednik, Quentin, Crede, AJP didn't drop off, Uribe snapped back after being horrid in Colorado, then he slipped, then snapped back then slipped again. Iguchi was pretty good, Ramirez, despite what some will tell you about his expectations, won a Silver Slugger while making a little over $1 million a year. I believe the expectations weren't that or he would have been paid a lot more. I posted something earlier, but in the 8 seasons Walker was the hitting coach, it might shock you to know, the White Sox offense was ranked higher in the league than the White Sox pitching 4 times. I guarantee the Sox spend more money on pitchers per average salary than position players.
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) I think it's time to consider most of the remaining games 'must wins'. I agree. We have to keep an eye on Cleveland. I hope Hawk will keep us posted on their score tonight, but this game tonight is big.
  20. A loss tonight would really hurt the Sox playoff chances.
  21. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) Yeah, he really helped Paul Konerko alright. He watched him go through a couple off horrendous half-season long slumps until he "figured it out." What a genius that Walker is. You do realize Walker took over halfway through 2003 don't you? Kind of ruins your post.
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) I kinda agree with what you're saying as long as you're not expecting a quick-fix. Like Balta said, you're probably looking at guys in low A/High A with risk but a ton of upside. So either way, you're going to have a lot of question marks in the rotation next year and in 2013. You'll just have a better long-term inventory. Cooper is here, every pitcher should be good, right?
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 12, 2011 -> 02:42 PM) And he told these stories to sell a book, which isn't exactly the most noble of reasons to spill his beans. He has needed money for a while, which is why he continues with side projects at all times too, including boxing and independent baseball leagues. If he doesn't need money, do these every get told? When it comes to speaking about players who used steroids, I trust Canseco. When it comes to the effects of steroids, it's harder to trust one source who has likely embellished quite a bit to sell books. You trust him? Really? The guy who said Clemens didn't uses steroids and is one guy who would never cheat on his wife? Then its later revealed Clemens gave him hush money. Canseco is a whore. You can have lunch with him for $100.
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 13, 2011 -> 10:46 AM) From Jim Margalus: What's interesting in the article is the link to a conversation he had with Carlton Fisk about hitting coaches.
  25. Just found this. The consolation prize wasn't good. Victor Martinez is leaving the Red Sox for the Detroit Tigers, having accepted a four-year deal worth $50 million. The story was broken out of Venezuela this morning by Ignacio Serrano of El Nacional. Serrano reported that Martinez was offered four years and $48 million from the Orioles and three years and $48 million from the White Sox. Why he would take $12.5 million a year from Detroit and pass up $16 million a year from Chicago isn't clea I'd guess the reason he didn't take the Sox cash is there probably were some stipulations or deferred money or some other things.
