  1. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) palm springs is. So is Orlando. If you measure the greatest golf city as the number of quality golf courses in the area, Chicago, if not number one, is high on the list.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 07:26 PM) Which would be the sad part. Sacrificing Konerko (sure JR and the fans will love that one) because of players like Dunn, Teahen and Rios that nobody wants to see play. That would be adding insult to injury to the already cynical fanbase, along with trading Danks, Quentin and Buehrle. Well, KW was in this same "dark place" in 2007, dug down deep and decided to keep Buehrle and Dye around. It's not his modus operandi...which has actually been one of his strengths, but a weakness simultaneously. But it certainly worked out in 2008. It would be, but he's a pretty nice alternative for the teams thinking about jumping in on the Fielder/Pujols sweepstakes. Short term, reasonably priced, good guy, having a huge last season and a half, the Sox could maximize a return if they aren't going to be contending and actually do Paulie a favor and steer him to a team with a chance. I don't think this is the path that they will take, but if they do, dumping Paulie is the obvious move.
  3. I really doubt the Sox will ever go into a full rebuild in the few months, but if they did, the first guy you trade is Paul Konerko.
  4. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 02:35 PM) Here's the article. Which, by the way, quotes KW of being tired of talking about "stats and slumps." Here's exactly what he said about Ozzie: Williams said he likes the way Guillen has called his team out or defended it, depending on the situation. ‘‘The tone is set by the manager and coaches,’’ he said. ‘‘They certainly have an effect on the players. These are professional sports. There are times when players need a kick in the butt, there are times when they need to restore a sense of calm and confidence and there are times when you have to do a little bit of both. And I think what Ozzie did was, he did a little of both. It was needed at the time, and it was very timely.’’ I agree with KW. Its worked out perfectly.
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 08:37 PM) I thought you were talking about Howard Marshall, Anna Nicole Smith's ex-husband. That's bad. Funny, but bad.
  6. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 07:52 PM) You make it sound like he was Eddie Brinkman. He was a light hitter and free swinger but the worst he hit as a regular was .265. That would hardly rank him as a terrible hitter, "one of the worst hitters ever". He had no power and didn't walk at all. He wasn't much with the stick, but he did seem to come through in big situations.
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) Quite possibly, but a lot of that might be contingent on whether or not he has control of the clubhouse. I don't know the more "inside" stuff with that team. I'm sure their expectations are higher than ours after winning so many divisions and always having the same results. It's time for them to take the next step and if they don't, I couldn't fault them for going in another direction. The Twins haven't fired a manager in 25 years. They won't fire Gardenhire. He'll have to quit. The organization loves him more than Hawk does.
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) If these things are true, I don't know why Kenny Williams sticks around. He has no power to fire his manager, and he can't even fire a coach? Why bother? His ego is the only reasonable answer, but that could work both ways. If JR would let KW fire a coach, I wonder if he would fire Cora thinking it might prompt Ozzie to quit.
  9. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 07:48 PM) good question. does anything fire up these guys? Just by watching how they play and nothing else, free weed might do the job.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 01:35 PM) Well, they are losing mine for next year thats for sure. I already sent a letter. This is actually a pretty smart idea. If every season ticketholder sent a letter, the "there's nothing to see here, move on" attitude towards change the Sox have shown this year would be a little different. The sense I get and maybe because its true with me as well, season ticketholders are more incensed with the Sox non action this year than being brutal in 2007 or even getting rid of Jack McDowell in 1995 and trying to sell everyone on Sabo and Kruk or even the White Flag Trade. Maybe its the economy and dollars are more precious now, but spending money watching some players who play like they don't care for an organization that doesn't at least appear to care makes me and I suppose RockRaines and others think maybe its better I spend my money elsewhere. The organization did put themselves on the spot and they have some guys performing miserably they couldn't give away, but that doesn't mean you have to bat Adam Dunn 3rd or 4th every game. You don't have to make out a line up with Dunn batting 4th and Rios 5th. The numbers Konerko have put up are unreal if you think about it. Theoretically, he should probably get less pitches to hit than anyone in baseball.
  11. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) Oh man, I'll have to dig it up, but it was something I read last week suggesting that KW wanted to fire a coach but Reinsdorf was reluctant. Let me look... EDIT: Here it is, from Cowley of course: If you think about it, firing a coach is the biggest copout. Either fire the manager, fire the GM or change some players. Personally, I don't buy the Ozzie/KW relationship being patched up and I think its a weight on the organization. If I had my choice they both would go, but one, either one, I believe would do wonders for the organization. I'm leaning towards Ozzie because he can take Oney and Cowley for that matter with him, and there's no telling how big his head will get if he actually won the war vs. KW, but I will take KW going as well, and you better hire a GM who will be able to go toe to toe with Ozzie.
  12. Its no surprise. He's had a lot of long layoffs the past three seasons. His body isn't used to the grind.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) Nice, someone posted bleacher report opinion. I hate that site. As for Rasmus... he'd fit right in with the other disappointments on our roster. Obviously I'd still love to get him in a deal for Jackson +, but we all know that's not happening, so it's a moot point. Rasmus is hitting like Beckham and playing a little less than average defense. Its amazing Beckham is a bust but the Sox would have a hard time getting someone like Rasmus.
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 03:08 PM) Most famous thread of all time: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...=47842&st=0 Funny how there were concerns about lawsuits but the poster turns out to be accurate.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 08:01 PM) The fact that people in the stadium could see it made it guaranteed that it was going to be a big story. Or at least big relative to the white sox. Unless more has happened than I've seen, the only sense in which it is overblown is that people feel the need to insist that gay-bashing is some sort of virtue that should be defended. It wasn't a big story until it was made a big story. He did it on Monday. It hit the papers on Friday. He shouldn't have done it, but its really not that big of an offense.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) And I regret the time that I did it to this day. One of the worst things that came out of my mouth. When I was a little kid we called each other those names and we didn't even know was a homsexual was or a straight person was. Clearly they are words or names tied into the gay community, but people throwing them out there aren't necessarily putting down gay people when using them. If Ozzie calls Marriotti a f**, he gets in trouble. If he calls him a cocksucker, he doesn't have to go to class. Doesn't make much sense to me. I just think some people use those words as something different than the PC police assume.
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 03:33 PM) I'm glad you're around to let people know whether they should be offended by something. Have you ever called one of your friends gay or a f**? I think 99.9 percent of people here have. I also haven't seen any quotes from anyone in the gay communty about this thing. It probably was dumb to scratch it in the dirt, but man people are being criticized for things the people doing the criticizing do or have done probably many times. This PC movement is getting ridiculous. If it were such a huge deal, how come in this world of instant stories, did it take 4 days for the whole thing to come out? The media finally got the story and Telander threw it out there not because it hurt anyone, because only a few people even knew about it, but so he could publicly scold a professional athlete.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 07:46 PM) The only team that has the money to absorb Rios and another pitcher now is the Yankees. Its such a big contract and they have no place for Rios anyway. I don't think the Yankees would take his contract if you just GAVE them Danks. I think the Yankees are over the threshold, so a guy like Rios would really cost almost $20 million a year. Boston can't add payroll for that very reason.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 07:39 PM) If they try a major panic shakeup, they're going to lose a ton of season ticket sales anyway. It will be worse if they do nothing. Call someone up, put someone on the DL, anything. Just being stubborn thinking you aren't wrong is turning off a lot of people.
  20. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 01:41 PM) Until the last five days, I thought there would be something would click at some point, but now I think it's very likely that they will play horribly post-break, get to 10 under, and then win 28 of their last 45 to make it look "respectable". Yeah, they will finish with 82 or 83 wins and a few people will say this is part of the best stretch in White Sox history, above .500 baseball. IMO no matter how good or bad they play the second half this season, if they don't make the playoffs, this year was a failure. I did vote they would do nothing, but I think something has to and will happen. I would imagine not tonight or tomorrow with the AS game, but Wed. or Thurs. I have no inside knowledge, but it would really be crazy if everything remained status quo. They are going to lose a ton of season ticket accounts if they do nothing and things don't change.
  21. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 01:43 AM) I did at one point have someone call me out on the Dayan shirt, saying he wouldn't do anything for the club right now. He was stared at in disbelief. You ran into Rongey?
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 10, 2011 -> 06:52 PM) The Sox SHOULD ... Fire Ozzie tonight and Kenny tonight. Release Rios over the break and eat the contract. Bring up Dayan and have him play third; Morel can come in in late game situations if Dayan can't remember how to play third. Trade Pierre (at the moment you trade him, put Dayan back in left). Send down Beckham if he doesn't hit the first two weeks after the break. Shut down Peavy. These things all should be done IMO. Beckham's hitting .313 his last 10 games. I saw some rips in the gamethread by a few people. I suppose he's supposed to hit .400 with 50 homers or he's a bust.
  23. KW will be found and will give his: "I believe in the talent" speech. Ozzie will come back from Miami or Venezula and will say he thought about quitting, he didn't need the job and that he is rich.
  24. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 10, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) In fairness though, we did get to play the Yankees and Red Sox some in the first half this season. In year's past, we would get them over a two week period (along with minny). This season, I believe both teams still have to come here, I'm guessing we're not going there anymore. The Sox have a better record on the road than at home. There's only 70 games left and the post ASB starts out with 9 road games then Det, Bos, and NY for 10 at home. We will know very shortly if there is any life in this team.
  25. Fitting ending. Hawk says you have to tip your cap.
