Is Dunn available to pinch strikeout for someone tonight?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 08:16 PM) But you also have to adjust for those pitching ratings being, from first glance. pedestrian. Same thing with the hitting...playing half the games at USCF. If you do the park-adjusted ratings (baseball-reference), you'll come up with a much different set of comparisons. Not really. Sox pitchers have pitched better at home than on the road.

Tigers acquire our old friend Wilson Betemit
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 06:44 PM) You're naming players that had been very good prior to ever working with Walker. So those are the guys who didn't completely suck while they worked with him? Juan Uribe is your shining example? Dye, Thome, and Thomas had all been multiple-time all stars prior to ever meeting Greg Walker. Alexei, in my opinion, has been basically exactly what the scouting reports out of Cuba said he would be. Q was a first round draft pick who was injured for a great deal of his time in AZ. He was dealt because of a numbers crunch situation, not because anyone proclaimed him to be a bust. You're just going to make excuses for anyone who has had success under Walker. If you want to say Gavin Floyd is a feather in Don Cooper's cap, Carlos Quentin is a feather in Greg Walker's cap. We won't even mention Paul Konerko and how much he credits Walker. Aaron Rowand, even after playing in Philadelphia under Charlie Manuel said Walker is the best hitting coach he's ever had. It would be nice to have some success with the players from the Sox system, guys like Josh Fields, but I don't know how you could put that failure on Walker. They obviously weren't prepared well enough getting to the big leagues and no one has been able to help them since. Alexei is far and away a better hitter than what the scouts thought. If he is what they thought, he would have signed for a lot more money.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 06:17 PM) But can you name any hitters that were absolute garbage before coming here and flourished under Walker's tutelage? Jermaine Dye. Jim Thome was hurt in 2005. I'm sure he will use Frank Thomas as one of his examples. Alexei Ramirez was much better than advertised. Carlos Quentin was a bust in AZ and may have been MVP in 2008 in not for a fluke injury. Uribe was great his first season after being run out of Colorado. There are many. If Walker was half as pitiful as most say he is, there would be some players in his 8 years that went on to become much better when they got away from him.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 06:04 PM) I don't know, yo, I'm not behind closed doors. However, I'm not limiting this to just Alex f***ing Rios. There's a laundry list of players who are acquired, vastly underperform expectations, and then go on to re-achieve their former productivity elsewhere. Who? Swisher is one, but he did not work with Walker. That is a fact. Its one reason the Sox got rid of him. I hope you don't say Wilson Betemit. He batted 45 times for the White Sox. I can name a few pitchers that flourished after leaving the Sox and Don Cooper walks on water. I think Walker would be a lot more popular if he got hammered and went on talk radio.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 05:51 PM) You're right, Greg Walker forced that waiver claim to work hard. Apparently, hitting coaches only matter for players when they are performing, and not the vast majority of our players who suck f***ing balls and have their worst offensive seasons in White Sox uniforms. Exactly what has Walker done with Rios that he should have done differently? Since you seem to be the expert, what's the simple fix to get Alex interested again? Hitting coaches matter, but to say they are fully responsible for failure, that's just crazy. Again, you can blame Greg Walker all you want, he's not the problem. They can spend millions bring in another hitting coach and for a few months you will be all excited, but then you'll say it will take some time, then you will say Walker ruined them, then you will start questioning the next hitting coach, then you will call for his head. The bottom line is unless you get better hitters, the results aren't going to change much. Most of these guys don't spend hours a day with the hitting coach no matter who he is.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Rowand's contract ends after 2012, Rios's after 2014. Rios has an extra $25 million on his contract. That would be a no-brainer for the Sox if the Giants would do it. Its pretty sad how bad a guy must be if someone hitting .230 with no power, owed a ton of money next year is too much to give up in exchange.

"I'm Ready"

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 03:15 PM) Walker has been the Sox hitting coach since 2003, and since then, here are the White Sox rankings in runs scored in the AL: 2003: 791 runs (8th in the AL) 2004: 865 (3rd in the AL) 2005: 741 (9th in the AL) 2006: 868 (4rd in the AL) 2007: 693 (14th and dead last in the AL) 2008: 811 (5th in the AL) 2009: 724 (12th in the AL) 2010: 752 (7th in the AL) 2011: 389 (10th in the AL, on pace for 650 runs) It started out well, but has been bad from 2007 on (with 2008 a good year). Line ups have something to do with it. BTW, the great Rudy Jaramillo, the guy who would make every White Sox hitter a HOFer has the Cubs 9th in the NL in runs. Don Cooper can do no wrong and here's where the pitchers ERA ranked since 2004 when Walker had his first full season as the hitting coach. 12th-2004 2nd-2005 10th-2006 12th-2007 6th-2008 2nd-2009 8th-2010 6th-2011

Sox can still win AL Central
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 11:20 AM) Based on Dunn's career numbers, what makes you think this is his new norm? The fact that he's been so awful for so long makes you wonder. It is his new norm until the results change.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) Yeah, but his "sucking" for the Jays in 2009 would be a revelation this year. Check out his splits in 2009 alone. He had a .744 OPS for the Jays in 2009. I'd KILL for that right now. 2009 after he got here, .530 OPS. Walker must have said something totally different to him the first half of last year, then changed his tune back to his BS probably just to piss you off. He made that ridiculous waiver claim useful with some hard work over the winter and Rios got lazy again.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 04:45 PM) http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6811/c...r2SkJNCsHSFCLcF Yet another player who flourished under the tutelage of THE Greg Walker. How many outliers need to exist under one man's tenure before we try to explain the outliers? Wilson Betemit? The guy with 45 ABs in a White Sox uniform. The reason he couldn't find time was because he was awful defensively and the Sox had a DH, but blame Walker.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 08:58 PM) The bullpen didn't get up until after te 3rd run came in and then that was Sale. Not excuses, just the reality. That's what I'm saying. It was poor managing.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 08:56 PM) I agree. The dude does battle, he is a warrior out there, but this guy we're watching pales in comparison to the dude who used to pitch for the Padres...he's got nothing in the tank at this point. He did hit 90 on one pitch, but his fastballs are 87-89 and his slider is rolling far more than is used to. They need to shut this guy down. He really is doing it with guts at this point, which I respect that, but something isn't right with this guy. This pitcher used to be filthy, had electric stuff and now he's a step up from a junk baller. Very sad...hopefully he does get it back at some point because at this point it's about a dude's LIFE and not just a win tonight. What good is shutting him down going to do? He needs to pitch and pick up some strength. Its ironic the outing that killed him was one when he was basically unhittable, the relief outing he had.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 08:53 PM) The bullpen probably isn't even ready yet. I'm sure that is the reason, but its no excuse. Not any stall tactic, didn't get anyone up until the cattle was out of the barn. It doesn't take long to get loose in these conditions.

Moustakus has a lower OPS than Morel. Good thing he's not a White Sox. He'd be considered as bust on here by now.

Ozzie needs to go. He's totally mismanaged this inning. The most important thing managing in MLB is managing your pitching staff and this inning he has been about as poor as you can get.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 08:07 PM) Peavy looks like a very mediocre pitcher out there. I think he's doing alright, and the gun looks OK. He does look a little uncomfortable out there. I don't know if its the heat and humidity or he's hurting.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 05:13 PM) Well Ozzie said he will start to sit Dunn if he continues struggling. Everytime Dunn goes to the plate I think of the Major League announcer saying" Dunn is 0 for his last.... whatever" lol 7 for 79 with 40 ks. Its hard to believe anyone could be that bad. Its harder to believe a team would actually keep someone in the line up AND bat them 3rd or 4th while that is going on.
