  1. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 11:24 AM) Ozzie's opinion of himself as a player always amuses me. I did not see him when he was young (saw him from '93 on), but it seems to me that he would be a bench player if he played today (despite the ROY, GG, and All Star appearances). I'm not an Ozzie is a baseball genius guy or anything like that, but when he played, Ozzie was a pretty fun guy to watch especially before he hurt his knee. He was great defensively and although he didn't hit with a particularly high average or get on base all that much, or have any power at all, he always seemed to get a hit at a big time. He'd be playing everyday today IMO . When he got hurt, it really sucked the life out of the team.
  2. QUOTE (joeynach @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 10:56 PM) He means booed heavily at Nationals Park, not inside USCF when they showed it on the screen. No. I mean booed heavily at USCF. They don't have audio on the highlights at USCF. I thought it was pretty sad because it was a pretty violent boo.
  3. They showed him with Sox hat on the board at USCF in the 8th inning and he was booed heavily.
  4. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 10:34 AM) Can anybody answer this question for me: If I set my AT&T UVerse to DVR a ballgame and the game goes past the scheduled 3 hours, will the recording go through the end of the game or stop at the scheduled time? I don't know about UVerse. Directtv you need to manually add, but Buerhle is pitching today, so it shouldn't be a problem.
  5. Jerry Crumbs Krause is back with the White Sox. The Slueth as he's known played a big role in bringing Ozzie Guillen and KW and Scott Pippen, Kornell David and Dalibor Bagaric to Chicago is going to be a scouting consultant, keeping his eye on the Dominican. I actually was on an elevator with Jerry a couple of years ago and the way he was weazing, I was very concerned. Hope all is well with him.
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 08:32 AM) Yeah, I think the A's would pay all but the pro-rated minimum. He's not being released. He's being sent down to the minor leagues. If the Sox claim him, they pay him. If Oakland released him, then they would only have to pay minimum, but that is not what's happening here.
  7. Jack Cust is a poor man's Jim Thome. One problem with that though, he actually gets paid more than Jim Thome. If you pass on Thome, you aren't going to want Cust.
  8. Frank did analysis for TBS a couple of years ago in the playoffs. It may have been because he was new to it, but he was pretty bad. If the Sox struggle offensively and he starts giving advice on the air, I think it will get pretty uncomfortable. And as long as KW is the GM, for those who wonder if Frank will be a coach or something like that, remember this KW doozy, "The man is an idiot." It appears he wants something to bide his time while he watches his son. I don't think he would want a full time coaches gig anyway. The money they make is nothing to him.
  9. If your cable or sattelite systems carry MLB Extra Innings, there's a free preview the first week of the season.
  10. Why is it Linebrink gets crap for his struggles, but guys like Garcia get away with being worse? I think Linebrink will shock this board and be decent this year.
  11. QUOTE (sf_soxfan @ Apr 3, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) Vizquel 3-for-3 with stolen base - not bad KW was waiting for him to get the proper amount of seasoning before signing him.
  12. Lucy was my guy in Spring Training 2006 but really hasn't done much and had a huge injury since. Maybe they could squeeze something out of him for a game or two a la Corky Miller, who did hit 6th in a game last year.
  13. So Ozzie has the team he wants, yet says anyone who picks the White Sox to win the WS is crazy? Does that make sense?
  14. Its amazing how much more solid a baseball writer becomes when they count the White Sox as one of the best. I've read for years on this board that Rosenthal was an idiot. I like Rosenthal's columns, but am concerned about his prediction. It appears his pre-season picks haven't been on the money.
  15. I think there has to be concern about Garcia if only for the fact that he really hasn't done anything since 2006. That's a long time. I know a lot of people were thrilled with his performance last September, including me, but face it, a lot of performances you see in September are never repeated. Its not like the Sox are paying him a lot of money. Despite what Oney Guillen thinks, and he knows more about baseball than any of us because he hit almost .140 in rookie ball, there's a good chance Freddy is a bust. I'm pretty sure KW knows the odds as much as anyone. Its probably one big reason Hudson isn't in the bullpen.
  16. QUOTE (11and1 @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 07:08 PM) I wasn't aware this discussion was a zero-sum game. Can't we all be happy if Teahen performs? Even though some of us think(as of last week) he may not? This "No-Lose" theory only holds water only if you will be happy if he tanks, thus vindicating your POV. Of course I'll be happy if he does well--even if it's necessary to tell me "I told ya so". No, if he does well--and thankfully it appears he's headed in that direction--it will be a happy surprise. I agree with you. This is a White Sox fan message board. I really don't think anyone on here really wants anybody to be bad just so they can say I told you so. I'm pretty sure we would all like the Sox to go 173-0 this year. Different opinions spark discussion. If everyone thought the exact same way it would be a pretty boring board. Besides if there is some zero sum game as Ranger suggests, there's also the I told you so the other way.
  17. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) Very good hire IMO. One of the best mid-major coaches out there. Although the same was said about Lickliter. It will be interesting to see how McCaffery recruits without any real midwest experience besides being an ND assistant for two years in the late 80s, but lots have changed since then. That to me is the hardest part to get going when you are a new coach, you gotta make a lot of contact and friendships with coaches in a short period of time. He was at ND for 11 years I believe. He'll recruit a lot better than Lickliter if not for the only reason he likes to coach a brand of basketball that is actually fun to play. I'm very excited. He's the only coach ever to take 3 separate schools from single bid conferences to the tournament. With Carver Hawkeye Arena getting a $50 million renovation, it won't be long before Iowa becomes relevant in basketball again.
  18. Coaches an up-tempo style, I think its a solid hire. If he can recruit decently, Carver Hawkeye Arena should be back to full capacity in a couple of years.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) That was 100% deliberate. Probably 110 were fastballs again. Peavy was happy with the outing he liked his breaking ball, he said his problem was location. But you are correct, it means nothing if he gets tagged and nothing if he throws a no hitter at this point. Just be ready when it counts.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 05:17 PM) Teahen up to .256. From where he was, I'd say that's a good thing. He hit .433 with a 1.360 OPS last spring and he was poor when it counted. Spring numbers mean squat. Hopefully Walker has him doing something that will translate to hits when it matters.
  21. QUOTE (lord chas @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) most overrated award in baseball imo Unless a White Sox wins one.
  22. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 11:04 PM) You would be correct. Though some players have said they would prefer shorter ST times. Gavin Floyd was ready to go 2 weeks ago. I'm sure most would like shorter spring training, just like most in the NFL would like a shorter training camp. Some guys need it. Especially guys coming off injury. I would be though if it was shorter, they would like it to start later, not start the regualar season sooner. If they started sooner, chances are there would be a lot more doubleheaders later in the season.
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 03:28 PM) Only 107 games. And to be fair, the Sox didn't plan on having Everett DH or play nearly that much throughout the entirety of the year. Besides all of that, it doesn't justify the Sox using the DH's they are. Yes they did. They knew Thomas wasn't going to be ready at the start of the season, and there was question as to whether he would ever play again.
  24. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 03:57 PM) Spring Training doesn't always mean much, but all things being equal, I'd sure rather have a guy go into Opening Day on a hot streak as opposed to a cold streak. That's probably true, then again, DeWayne Wise was a star in spring training last season.
  25. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 23, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) If you only count the 4 years in which Crede played close to a full season ('03-'06) and Teahen's last 3 years (taking out his seemingly anomalous '06 campaign) they have the exact same OPS+ (95). Of course then I'm counting Crede's '06 performance which was far and away his best offensive season so I'm not really being fair to Mark, so Crede's '03-'05 OPS+ is 90 and Teahen's '07-'09 OPS+ is 95. So in conclusion; I have no idea. Most couldn't wait for Crede to be replaced by Josh Fields, who ironically was part of the package for Teahen, and a guy no one even mentions when they talk about that trade. If Teahen plays like he played at KC, he will not be very popular.
