Should the White Sox trade Jenks and try to sign Webb, too?
Dick Allen replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
AJP is one of the least appreciated players on this board. As far as Jenks, unless he's lights out the rest of the season and the Sox have no other options, I looked for him to be shopped. I don't think KW wants to pay him his next arb number. As far as Webb goes, absolutely look to sign him if the surgery is a success and he can start throwing fairly soon, but I doubt it. Look at all the guys with shoulder problems. They are always out longer than first thought and usually don't have much. Garcia, Prior, Mulder, didn't Smoltz have shoulder issues? He's batting practice. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 06:37 AM) Again, no one is pining for Getz to be replaced. However, if a player can be acquired which makes this team better, then he should be replaced. Just as any other player on the team. What we are merely pointing out is that Beckham's bat can be huge at 2b due to the mere fact that he can play the position soundly (at least we think). And if that is the case, then it could be possible to acquire a 3b who's production comes at a cheaper rate due to the fact that the league average corner infielder produces more than a middle infielder. Thus, the market generally reflects that. However, if this is not feasible, then by all means, keep Getz where he is. My point was people shouldn't be hellbent on moving Beckham, just because fantasy baseball rules make him more valuable as a 2B. He's more valuable to the White Sox as a 3B right now, and may be for quite a long time.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 11:34 PM) One of the things many fans are not aware of with Poreda... He can hit high 90's when pitching out of the windup... but not out of the stretch. I wondered why he would start an inning out of the stretch considering he was a starter, then when Torres had a start, he was always in the stretch. I just assumed it was something the White Sox may be doing with minor leaguers. I do know, some guys get their mechanics all screwed up with a wind up. I don't know why they wouldn't want him throwing 97 unless he cannot throw a strike.

I find it funny that you're supposed to put guys in certain positions so they have more "value" in people's minds. Who cares what position Beckham plays as long as he's in the line-up. I saw one post where if you put Chase Utley in the OF he just becomes your regular 30-35 homer guy with 110-120 rbi, like there are hundreds of those around. If Beckham gets even better than he is now and stays at 3rd, he'll probably be the best 3rd baseman the White Sox ever had. I don't see the downside. I really don't understand the disdain a lot here have for Getz. In March, the consensus was he should lead off, now after performing about as well as expected, he needs to be replaced. I guess fans are conditioned to scoring via the longball. They complain when thats the only way to score, but when a guy like this comes along, since he doesn't hit a lot of homers, he's garbage, and needs to be replaced by someone who can play 3rd and hit homers. Beckham's "value" is his value to the White Sox, not his "value" vs. others at certain positions. If the White Sox are better off with Beckham at 3rd, that's where he's most valuable. If its second, the same. As long as he's in the line-up, I'm happy.

I believe the White Sox would rather not pay Jenks what he will command next season, but I suppose a lot will depend on how he finishes up the season, what other teams would be willing to give up for him and what other options the Sox have.

Brandon Webb is going to have shoulder surgery. The D-Backs have an $8.5 million option on him with a $1.5 million buyout. You would think they would buy him out and he'll be a FA. I just wonder what type of market he will have. Shoulder problems are tough to overcome. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) whoops. Meant Nix obviously. It's like SS is throwing him off. At 2B he makes that look easy. Which is weird. Anyone could understand if it were the throws he was struggling with, but he's having problems with groundballs. -

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 02:28 PM) Yea but in the grind of 162 games, hitters dont get a chance to review each specific guy thoroughly. The atypical amount of attention Mark got in the nat'l press probably highlighted some of the things he does, as a bit of a refresher. And if anything it aids all those younger Yanks that have NOT been in the league since 01. Most of the Yankee hitters have faced Buerhle many times. They know what he's trying to do. He just didn't have it today. If he's off just slightly he usually gets lit up. He also has 3 or 4 of these types of games every year which inflates his ERA just enough to keep him from being considered elite nationally. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 11:57 AM) Sounds like they see Bacon long-term at 3b? It Getz continues to make the strides he's making, he is leading AL Rookies in a few offensive categories and has stolen 16 or 17 bases and only been caught once, Beckham at 3rd is fine. His bat is probably better than anyone imagined.

The only thing that contradicts any earlier talk was the no hesitation by JR, according to KW and JR, JR's initial response was no thanks on this deal but KW and Hahn talked him into it.

QUOTE (Jeremy @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 04:52 AM) C'mon, you're perfectly capable of reading my posts, including the one that preceded this one: Point #1: Anyone who claims they knew Getz was going to hit .324 in July or .340 after the ASB (notably, in just 47 at bats) is full of it. Point #2: Anyone who insists that Fields wouldn't have improved in June and July is wrong because...we just don't know. Some fans seem to show a strong preference for players that are new to the major league club over players with more experience. To some extent, it's worth remembering that Fields hit .275/.359/.458 in the minors and was a first round pick whereas Getz hit .286/.361/.381 and was drafted in the 5th round. Furthermore, Fields previously showed that he's capable of holding his own in the majors when he put up solid numbers and finished 7th in ROY voting back in '07. Obviously he struggled mightily in '08 and didn't get off to a very good start this season but when people complain about a player to this degree it sounds more like frustration than levelheaded evaluation. Point #3: Gordon had spent very little time at 3B when we called him up and had spent most of his formative years as a middle infielder. The idea that he had to play 3B and couldn't play any 2B at that point makes little sense. Clearly with the way Beckham and Getz have played, the White Sox choosing to give them playing time over Fields was the correct choice. I really don't understand your argument. "Anyone who insists that Fields wouldn't have improved in June and July is wrong because...we just don't know." Would that also work for anyone who insists Corky Miller wouldn't have been an All Star catcher if the White Sox hadn't sent him down? Where a guy was drafted doesn't matter either. In fact, its refreshing an organization gives playing time based on performance rather than draft position and/or signing bonus. Would you rather have the 38th pick Mark Buerhle on the mound, or first rounder Lance Broadway? Fields was 7th in ROY voting. Care to bet me that Getz will be at least in the top 7 this year? Fields has 620 or so major league at bats and has a .228 career batting average and career .302 OBP with well over 200 strikeouts. Defensively, he's below average. Bang his drum all you want, but the numbers and your eyes, if you're honest with yourself, will tell you Chris Getz will help the White Sox win more games at this time.

Would Joe Mauer be worth going after as a FA in 2010?
Dick Allen replied to chisoxfan09's topic in Pale Hose Talk
He's exactly the kind of guy JR would open the checkbook to acquire. I doubt he leaves Minnesota. With their new stadium and revenues, and the Pohlads being perhaps the richest owners in MLB, losing Mauer would be devastating. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 06:28 PM) I keep pointing this out...right now he's already hitting doubles at a higher rate than anyone else in the league, and he's got 5 HR already to boot. Add some muscle in a year or two and even fewer of those doubles will stay in the park. I don't think he has to add any muscle to become a 30-35 homer guy. He can "finesse" them out of the park like Mattingly. Didn't he lead the NCAA in long ones last year? -

QUOTE (jphat007 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 06:25 PM) Did we start his clock this year, or did we bring him up late enough to where it didnt start? It doesn't matter. JR will open his checkbook as wide as it can go for this guy when he has to. Beckham is a guy if he remains healthy, who will be with the White Sox 15 years. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 06:19 PM) The Twins own us in the dome. It is because we don't play the style of baseball condusive to success on that sort of surface. The Sox have played very well thus far against the better teams in baseball and it is why I believe the SOx will win the world series if they make the playoffs (that and our rotation). I think its because the White Sox have already figured they are going to lose before the game starts. -

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 06:02 PM) You seee Beckham staying in the 2 hole when cuban not so missile comes back? Yes. He started hitting 2nd before the injury. Ozzie said a few weeks ago, Beckham was a 2 hitter and Ramirez was not, but he didn't want to put him there yet. Obviously, he eventually thought Beckham was ready.
