QUOTE (beck72 @ May 10, 2009 -> 07:15 AM) I'd imagine, this year or offseason anyway, the sox would have to trade Josh Fields in order to get a guy with a high enough ceiling to be a "horse". Yet for 2009, the guy would have to be solid enough to be a 5th Starter, someone who can give them 6 innings a start. Of course, that potential horse would have to be underperforming [like Fields], but has the stuff/ makeup to put it together. If Beckham can play 3b reasonably well, it could make Fields expendable. Esp. as the sox have other options at 3b in the minors with Viciedo and C.J. Retherford. The place to look would be pitching rich teams in the minors and young solid SP's in the bigs that have a need for a position player like Fields. I don't think the current version of Josh Fields could get you anything but a potential "horse" that needs a lot of refinement. The White Sox had the opportunity to address this during the offseason when Contreras wasn't expected to be with the team let alone the starting rotation. They thought Marquez was a stud. Jon Garland on a 1 year contract would have looked very nice in a White Sox uniform. Too bad KW thought Marquez was the same pitcher and didn't want to spend any money.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ May 9, 2009 -> 08:50 PM) That's Davis' 48th K in 100 at-bats. Christ I hope they find a way for him to get 550 at-bats. He's their Josh Fields. -

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 9, 2009 -> 08:16 PM) I can't wait until we have a catcher who can throw someone out. You are going to need a big turnover in the pitching staff to realize your dream -
fathom is Ozzie. Pods is leading off tonight. Getz 2nd. Fields 8th. Anorexei back in the line-up as well.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 9, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) Richard is a reliever. He doesnt have the stuff to get through a lineup more than twice. I would rather see us sign someone like Pedro, or bring up someone who is actually performing well as a starter in the minors. It makes sense but costs money, therefore it is not even a consideration.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 9, 2009 -> 07:57 AM) You have seen this board? Wasn't Whisler removed from the 40 man? If these guys were KWs boys, they most likely would be in Chicago right now. Its not to say either one of them won't get called up, but Egbert and Broadway each got the call without getting people out in Charlotte. They are minor league fodder.

Just remember, coming into spring training, Conteras wasn't even considered as an option for the starting rotation. Look at the options they have to take his place. The winter of 2008-2009 was not one KW would want to put on his resume.

Some of the White Sox farmhands are going to be dissappointments, but at least they have a lot more that have a shot at being successful now. Rookies generally don't lead teams to championships so there will be some growing pains. I just wonder what slicing $40 million more off the payroll will do to the season ticket base, especially if this year is a tough one, and they don't have playoff ticket money in hand in advance. We'll probably find out next year. (And if that's the plan, watch for the White Sox to hold the line on ticket prices and state how they are doing it for their fans in a rough economy.)
-
The one thing the White Sox need to do is have Friday night home games rained out. They are now 0-3 being outscored 32-5. Last night losing by 6 was the closest they have come to winning a Friday night home game this year.

I was sitting behind the White Sox dugout tonight, and I know Contreras was bad and has been bad, but some of the classless people around there are way out of line with what they are yelling at him. The guy is perhaps the biggest reason there is a trophy at that park. He also is a guy that wasn't supposed to pitch until August, if ever again. Remove him from the rotation, but the Count will rise again, and all these "fans" will be singing another tune. I understand the whole, "I bought a ticket, I have a right to be an asshole" talk, the funny thing is most of the people who pop off didn't buy their own ticket, but saying disgusting things like what was being thrown at Jose shouldn't be said to anybody higher than Drew Peterson.

GM Ken Williams criticizes pitchers for not protecting hitters
Dick Allen replied to Wanne's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (lostfan @ May 8, 2009 -> 11:35 AM) He gets hit all the time because he crowds the plate, not because pitchers throw at him. Some players would back off, he chooses not to. Yes, but White Sox hitters get hit a lot more than the opposition, and I don't think the majority are intentional, but............................. Its time to put something in the pitcher's mind. If they are going to come inside and hit a White Sox, one of their guys is going to pay the price. It can only help the White Sox offense if an opposing pitcher is even slightly less motivated to pitch inside. -
Chicago Tribune, pretty interesting, he thinks he's striking out too much, but this article goes total against the "lift and pull" that the White Sox most definitely employ according to this board, so it must be BS: By Mark Gonzales Several e-mailers wondered about Jim Thome's high strikeout total, and Thome was more expansive on the subject than he was about elaborating on former teammate Manny Ramirez. "Unfortunately, a little too much," Thome said before going 0-for-3 with a walk but not striking out in the Sox's 6-0 win over Detroit. "I know we’ve been working and trying to make adjustments in the cage here. If anything, you like to put the ball in play because you can actually get easy RBIs that way. Unfortuantley I haven’t done that. "We have to continue to work and continue to grind in the cage and make the adjustments that hopefully I’ve done in the past." Thome agreed that concentrating on hitting the ball up the middle and to left helped him break out of a slump last year. "I think when I was hitting the ball the other way, I think things were coming together," Thome said. "Obviously, I’m staying on the ball and again, as I said, it just hasn’t happened. If you work hard and continue to put work in and made adjustments, hopefully here it will turn around. "You can’t necessarily say it was the weather because it’s getting warmer. Ultimately you have to go out and get it done and just has not happened. We need to make that adjustment and get it done." Thome admits he feels more comfortable facing left-handers but that he has been sitting against most left-handers this season. "Well, I feel better against left-handers, I do. I think, to be honest, (hitting coach) Greg Walker and I have had this discussion. Against right-handers, I think some times I try to do too much and by doing that, I’ve pulled off the ball a little bit. I need to get back to hitting the ball through the middle of the field."

I think biting on it is supposed to increase concentration or relax the rest of you in some way.

5/7 Detroit Tigers @ Chicago White Sox 7:11 CDT CSN

QUOTE (fathom @ May 7, 2009 -> 08:43 PM) With Fields striking out so much lately, I checked his game log: multiple strike out games in 9 of his last 14 I've never been a Josh Fields guy, but he hasn't been so bad defensively this year. He needs to hit homers. 30 homers and 180 strikeouts isn't ideal from your #2 hitter, but its a lot better than 20 homers and 180 ks. -
