We can b**** about the Sox not hitting Chamberlain, but the reality is few do hit him.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 07:17 PM) I have a bigger issue with AJP seemingly coasting during these games now. Of course, Hawk thinks AJP should play more, neglecting the fact that AJP seems to completely hit the wall as the season goes on. Ever since AJ got away with that interference BS, he's been awful. Maybe its karma.

Linebrink is hurt. I think its a lot more serious than they are letting on. Sunday, when he finally got in and gave up a bomb, he was trying to stretch out his shoulder the entire time he was on the mound.

Why is Hawk so surprised? Its Mike MacDougal. Its like being shocked Josh Fields strikes out.

Oney Guillen
According to baseball cube, Oney was signed by Dave Wilder. I wonder how much they had to fill his dufflebag .

Oney Guillen
QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 08:57 AM) What "advancement" did Oney see? He had his butt parked on the bench for most of a season at Bristol last year. He played in 2 games at Great Falls in 2008 followed by 17 games on the bench at Kanny. Any players watching and concerning themselves with that type of "advancement", if you could call it that, need to look in the mirror and slap themselves. OK... he got one game at Charlotte. But there was logic behind that. The Knights needed a 2nd baseman for a meaningless end of season game. No way they were going to pull somebody up from Birmingham or W-S since both of those teams were preparing for their league playoffs. So, they had to bring someone up from Kannapolis. Was there any other low A-ball 2nd baseman who was passed over for 1 game callup to AAA.... somebody who did so well that they were worthy of that callup? No. Its nice to know you have no problem with one of the worst farm systems in baseball being a playground for relatives of others in the organization. So what he's a 36th round pick. Well, Buerhle was a 38th round pick. Good thing the White Sox didn't decide to draft JR's neighbor with 2 left feet instead that year, so maybe he could have a good time and be overmatched as a rookie. Oney, if his last name was Smith, would have at least been released after the 2007 season. If the guy's last name was anything but Guillen, he wouldn't have been drafted, and he wouldn't have received the opportunities he received, including playing one game in Charlotte. That is just wrong.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) Im not an expert either, but when I worked in radio they made me sign a no-compete that lasted 3 months after termination date, whether it be by resignation, firing, or retiring. I have been told a few times that no-compete clauses are a little iffy to enforce, but who knows My wife is a labor/employment lawyer. She has said in the past most non competes are unenforceable.

2009 schedule announced for White Sox
QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 12:07 PM) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ makes perfect sense, economically. Week day games are harder to sellout. Sox-Scrubbies will sellout regardless of when its played. Extra money in the pocket!!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Yeah, but that series is at Wrigley. They could play Lane Tech High School on a Wednesday in February and it would sellout as long as the beer vendors were coming.

Josh Fields to have surgery at season's end.
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 11:23 AM) I dunno, a seemingly unrelated injury seemed to affect Jermaine Dye too. It didn't affect his strikeout rate, and his walk rate didn't go down dramatically IIRC. Fields either needs to become a walk machine and increase his OBP significantly and try to be Adam Dunn Jr. offensively, or drop his K rate by a huge amount if he is to become much of a major leaguer IMO. 200 k's a year, hitting .240 with a pretty low OBP gets you the Greg Norton career in a hurry. He's already in Ozzie's doghouse for regressing defensively. Its a house that is very hard to exit.

I don't know what effect his knee injury had on swinging and missing, something he did with even more regularity this year.

Oney Guillen
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 08:21 AM) If they were that discouraged by that, something tells me they weren't going to have the testicular fortitude to advance to the majors anyway. Maybe not, but you're dealing with 17-20 year olds.

Oney Guillen
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 17, 2008 -> 02:30 AM) Who was honestly hurt by Oney Guillen's promotions throughout the Sox minor league system? That would be impossible to determine. I would imagine it would have some affect on his teammates at lower levels who outperformed him and were obviously better players than him only to see him advance because of his last name. Who knows if that discouraged one or some enough to where they don't develop into useful players. It might be understandable if a high pick moves up, but a 36th rounder hitting .120 with 1000 errors moving up and you're staying put might just put a thought in the back of your mind that you can't play. If the guy's name was Oney Jones, he never would have been drafted or signed.

Oney Guillen
QUOTE (scenario @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) I find it sort of funny that anybody would really be irritated that we 'wasted' a 36th round draft pick on Oney. The year the Sox drafted Carrie Schueler, and it was later than the 36th round, they drafted at least 4 players that played in the major leagues, including Placido Polanco, who obviously didn't sign, after her. I never had a problem with them drafting Oney, it was better than drafting KW's other son and Schueler's daughter because at least he signed. He obviously showed he had no business playing professional baseball.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 09:08 AM) I know it will probably piss of people, but it makes sense. The kid has been around baseball since the day he was born. I imagine there is a decent chance that some of that exposure has rubbed off and given him a chance to recognize talent. I hope he goes to a different scout school than whoever signed him.

Oney Guillen
He retired. There was a message on the scoreboard at tonight's game congratulating him for "going out on top" what with his .333 avg. and .667 Slg. in Charlotte. The message was from JR, the Sox coaches and Freddy Garcia.

Tigers @ White Sox 9-14-08 GM 1
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) FROM THE TRIBUNE The forecast is for more rain, meaning the entire three-game series against the Tigers might be played after the regular season ends Sept. 28. They have no common days off between now and then. If the division race is still undecided then, the games will have to be made up, which would happen before a possible playoff game with the Twins if there is an AL Central tie. "Just be up by four games at the end of the season, and then you don't have to play those games," Guillen said. "It's not something the players should be concerned or worried about because they have to take it one game at a time, and hopefully it'll work out for the best." Somebodies math is wrong and it was never my strong point Its going to be a straight DH beginning at 4. The field looks fine. The radar also indicates the rain should be ending soon.

DJ....He Gone
QUOTE (BobDylan @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 04:50 AM) I don't know. I don't really care either. Sometimes I like to mute the games and I find it more enjoyable. Very few announcers add anything to the game. Hawk used to be one of them just on his antics alone, but his flavor has run out. At this point, I wouldn't mind if they ran an audio loop of "Pulp Fiction" during games. I don't need an announcer to tell me what's going on, let alone care if they get fired or not. After all, the most enjoyable experience is at the ball park where you can't hear the announcers. Now, if only I could mute the announcers but keep the sound effects... Several years ago, I believe it was NBC, actually broadcast an NFL game without announcers. It didn't go so well, but that also was at a time when they didn't have all the information they now show on the screen. It might be better received now. I love Hawk, but he does drive me crazy. I cringe when a borderline pitch goes against a White Sox pitcher, because everyone knows whats coming next. I love Hawk's homerism, and love that the emotion when the Sox do well is genuine. Maybe Stone's perspective as a pitcher, and status as a broadcaster will temper Hawk's tendency to rip on umpires every chance he gets.(He often overlooks the bad calls that go the White Sox way) It could be a match made in heaven. As far as DJ goes, he's a guy who has been in the booth for 9 years now. From where was at the beginning, its obvious he's worked very hard to get better, and its paid off. He's genuinely a nice person. You might not care if he is out of a job, but I don't find it silly that a lot of people have sympathy especially considering it isn't because of his performance he's been dropped, its because a bigger name was available.

DJ....He Gone
I really grew to enjoy DJ after initially wondering how they could possibly give him the job. Stone is a bigger name and its all about the benjamins. I hope DJ takes the radio gig, and if not I wish him well. I've taken the stairs down with him after the game a few times and he seems to be a very nice guy.

Tigers @ White Sox 9-14-08 GM 1
I wonder if Paulie slipping on wet grass and injuring himself had any effect on the umpires' or league's decision not to play tonight.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) Ozzie-Leyland-Williams look pissed. I'd be pissed too. They were told they would start the game on time even with the light rain. They are really messing with the pitchers as they have warmed up.

Broadway starting sunday...
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 01:18 PM) He's only started 2 or 3 games in his career. I think that's a lot more relevant, for good and bad reasons. OK. He's never started a major league game against a team not named the KC Royals.

Broadway has never started a major league game against a team not in last place.
