  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 10:40 PM) Yeah, that's a good point. At least they'll officially reach first place tonight after the local news is over, so we don't have to get that as the lead story. Hope that Zambrano wears himself out before the playoffs. He's almost unbeatable without Barrett catching him. I posted some stats in the Diamond catch anything thread. Zambrano and Peavy are unbeatable unless Barrett catches them when they became not so good.
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 10:38 PM) Nice performance by Matt Wise....10 pitches, 10 balls. Go f*** yourself Brewers. It really doesn't matter. Have you seen the Cubs schedule in September? They have it so easy. They will waltz to a division title. The NL may be worse this year than last.
  3. I wonder if KW could have got the same deal from Philadelphia for Contreras instead of Garcia. Even if he paid Freddy to do nothing this year, he would have shed Contreras' contract and been done with Freddy after 2007.
  4. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 10:27 PM) Gavin Floyd was the 4th pick in 2001 draft. Screw the draft position. Take that higher signing bonus and use it to sign more and/or better scouts. I agree.
  5. I'm probably one of the very few who think Contreras can bounce back from this. But I'd give him a few starts off. I still think this whole smuggling thing is weighing on him. But as the post above says, Gavin Floyd and Charlie Haeger will hardly make you forget Jose Contreras.
  6. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 10:19 PM) is anyone else really hoping we lose every game and get the worst record in baseball? You know, I can understand wanting to see the team win if we got quite a few prospects and were going to play them on the ML roster, cause you'd like to see the prospects develop and win at an ML level, but we only really have 2 position prospects worth a damn up right now, so it doesn't matter. As it stands right now, we really need the no. 1 pick and pray to god that the top player in the draft, probably Pedro Alveras, does not have Boras as their agent. But it looks like those bastard Devil Rays are gonna get the 1st pick again, and if not them it would be San Francisco. Well, here is to hoping we lose most of our games for the rest of the season. No way. I know its about draft position, but until the White Sox hire someone from the outside to handle it, not someone from the White Sox "family", I truely believe anyone they draft real early will either get injured, be a pretty mediocre player, be a total bust or not sign.
  7. As bad as Contreras has been, Floyd is showing he's even worse. He gives up 3 bombs tonight and one ball that would have gone out of any other park in the league was a flyout. It seemed almost every out was a rocket. If KW continues to call him one of the top prospects in the game someone should take him away in a straightjacket.
  8. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 09:42 PM) LMFAO If there's any consolation, at least the single A kids have someone who will hook them up with some beer. That's pretty good. I was thinking earlier that by the time the guy is 26 he should be in AA. He's the second coming of Dewon Day.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) Murton's not exactly young. He's certainly no better than WMP with the leather either.
  10. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 02:27 PM) IMO, the difference between Pena + Delcarmen and the 2 draft picks we'd get if JD simply walked is not huge at all. So anything below that in overall value and I'd have to say you really don't beat the draft picks (Delcarmen was a 2nd round pick, for example, so he'd actually have been the lower of the 2 picks). Who cares where he was drafted. He's in the major leagues and doing well. Albert Pujols was a later round draft pick. I wouldn't want a first rounder instead of him. Look at the White Sox first round pitching selections. I'd take Delcarmen over any of them.
  11. If he accepts arbitration he submits a figure and the White Sox submit a figure. The arbitrator determines which figure is closer to his market value.
  12. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 01:38 PM) You are misinterpreting the rule. Dye can't win in arbitration; he is not in his arbitration years and currently under the team's control beyond this year. If the White Sox offer $6 million, he can accept that offer or find a team willing to give him a different contract. Meanwhile, if the White Sox offer Joe Crede arbitration following the season, a contract has to be worked out or they will go to the arbitrator because he has not reached his free agent years yet and is thus still under the team's control. Offering Dye arbitration is an absolute no brainer. If KW doesn't, he should be fired on the spot just because of how absolutely ridiculous it would be not to. I am not misinterpreting the rules. If the White Sox offer arbitration and he accepts it works like any other arbitration. He certainly can win in arbitration. The lowest figure the Sox could offer is a 20% cut, but they would never do that if he accepts, because they would lose. If Dye accepted arbitration he would be considered a signed player and would play either at the figure the White Sox offer or the figure he and his agent throw out there depending on what the arbitrator decides.
  13. BTW any truth to the rumor than Honel quit?
  14. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 01:25 PM) just heard on the radio (espn1000) during the eric kasilias (sp?) and screamin a smith show (two of my least favorite people) that reports out of CHICAGO were that dye for manny delcarmen was close....dont know what that means...they didnt even mention willy mo, which worries me, i would hope we would get both guys but it makes sense if the bosox get gagne...also the red sox traded piniero, so they have another spot for an arm in the pen I don't think Piniero was on their roster.
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 12:18 PM) Why wouldn't the Sox offer Dye arbitration? Don't you have to offer something like 80 pct of their salary from the year before? I'm sure in a worst-case scenario, we could afford like 6 million on him next year. That's not how it works. They would have to offer arbitration first. If the Sox then submit a $6 million figure in arbitration and Dye asks for $15 million, the arbitrator will figure if Dye is worth more or less than the $10.5 million middle mark of the 2 offers. If he thinks Dye's fair market value is $10,500,000.01 or higher, he would win. He will get $10-12 million easily if he accepted arbitration. You would just hope he signs with someone before you have to determine whether to offer it or not, or be prepared to pay.
  16. This board in general really overstates 2 month rentals who are hitting .230 trade value.
  17. QUOTE(103 mph screwball @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 12:08 PM) I agree. I see no reason not to offer arbitration. If he accepts and he is not part of the plan, then he can be traded. Dye is not Magglio. It was questionable if Maggs was going to be able to run again. Tell Boston to jump in the bay. Why hasn't Mackowiak been traded yet? Dye can't run in the first place. What a lot of insiders are saying is the Sox aren't going to offer Dye arbitration. If that's the case, Pena and $$ is the way to go.
  18. Delcarmen is off the table, and whoever thinks he's mediocre must really think there are at best 4 or 5 decent pitchers alive. A strikeout an inning a WHIP of 1.00, a BAA of .188 an ERA of 2.70 and he throws as hard as anyone on the White Sox. Yeah he sucks. Why would KW trade a guy hitting .230 making $7 million for him?
  19. The Boston writer is going to have a chat at Boston.com at 11 central. He should have good Dye info.
  20. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 07:29 AM) Rowand will sign for less than what Gary Matthews Jr did. Last years' contracts were way out of whack and the prices will come down. I doubt it as far as prices coming down. Rowand might get less than GM, certainly not 3 or 4 million a year less. Ichiro is off the market. Hunter is going to get a big pay day. A. Jones has struggled and teams will be reluctant to show him a ton of money for a long time. Rowand is sitting pretty.
  21. Carlos Zambrano in 2007 with Barrett catching him: 2-4, 7.52 ERA, 1.893 WHIP. With anyone else: 12-3, 1.97 ERA, 0.985 WHIP. Jake Peavy in 2007 with Barrett catching him: 0-4, 4.88 ERA, 1.542 WHIP. With anyone else: 10-1, 1.89 ERA, 1.00 WHIP.
  22. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 05:59 AM) I could see the sox offering Dye a two yr deal with a 3rd yr option--something along the lines of $7, 8 mill per yr. Either that money will go to Dye or Rowand. Rowand's hitting .330. He will get a lot more than that.
  23. I don't know why people b**** about the return for Iguchi. When the Sox traded Ray Durham, at the time having a pretty good season, they picked up all but the minimum pro-rated on his contract and got back Jon Adkins. Getting someone to eat the contract may give the Sox a better player next year, and you get to see if Richar can play. If he can't, there's always the possibility of Iguchi coming back.
  24. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 10:02 PM) .356 OBP, 14 XBH (11 2B, 3 3B), 9 SB and 4 CS. Ick. But Scotty Pods was all world in 2005 when he had 29 XBH and a .351 OBP with a similar steal percentage although a few more.
  25. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 07:52 PM) Seems that is likely. Then again, Gustavo was destined for the can anyway. Look for D Lucy to be in Charlotte in the next day or two. As for the 40-man spot... I am psyched to see what might happen. I agree. Pulling the plug on Gustavo means nothing. If anything it prevents Ozzie from crying to KW to recall him next time Toby Hall gets hurt.
