The AJ Burnett 24 Hour Window Thread
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 09:36 AM) I wonder if Soriano can do the little things at all. He wouldn't really get a chance to have to bunt or move a guy over in an offense like the Rangers or Yankees. He can steal, that's for damn sure. He'd seem perfect if he were LH. I'm still up for getting him. Soriano is on pace for 40 homers. He wouldn't be used to move guys over.

The AJ Burnett 24 Hour Window Thread
QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) ive said this many times before that they always envisioned contreras being a closer. before they got him for esteban, and found shingo, they tried trading for him about a month earlier with the intention of making him the closer. they must really see something in contreras that would make him a strong closer. i know his #s as a reliever with the yankees were much better, and iirc someone pulled his 1st innings stats from last year and the year before and they were tremendous I wonder if his first inning against Detroit last week was the last piece of convincing they needed to think he could excel there. He struck out the side and made their hitters, who are pretty damn good, look silly.

The AJ Burnett 24 Hour Window Thread
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 09:20 AM) My buddy works for the sox, and mentioned that there was alot of activity going on there in the last few days. These are the names that I was given as discussed in the offices. A.J. Burnett Billy Wagner Jason Schmidt Alfonso Soriano I mentioned Soriano in another thread yesterday. If Thomas is presumed out, he would make an interesting DH. He can hit for power and can run like the wind. He doesn't get much of an opportunity to run with Texas, but stole about 35-40 bases a year when he was with the Yankees. I would prefer a LH batter, but Soriano would add a lot to the offense.

The AJ Burnett 24 Hour Window Thread
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 08:37 AM) Exactly, how is that? Bruce said he expected something to be done within the next 24 hours. Never, and I repeat, never, did I once imply if the deal wasn't done within the next 24 hours it wouldn't get done. Some of you folks b**** just for the sake of b****ing. You're the one b****ing. Levine said something could happen in the next 24 hours. Using the phrase 24 hour window implies the teams have 24 hours to get something done or that window is shut. Here's an example,if they give the Sox a 72 hour "window" to negotiate a contract extension, if that extension isn't agreed upon during that time, the negotiation would be terminated unless Burnett became White Sox property. I don't like Levine, and find some of his stuff incredibly inaccurate. But all he said was talks were serious and a deal could be struck in the next 24 hours. People on this thread are calling him a liar. He actually hasn't said anything that isn't true, even if no deal is eventually agreed to.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 08:17 AM) Marte's problems are not the lingering arm problems. Its his mechanics. He had the same exact problem last year. He short arms the fastball rushing the delivery too much and the ball sails. This is why he broke Chavez's hand last year. Its why he doesnt feel comfortable going against lefties and gets deep into counts. When he follows through on his fastball its a crisp 94-95mph with movement in on righties away from lefties. When he short arms it, it sails into lefties and high and away. Its a Rick Ankiel type pitch. If you watch his meatballs, its always when he slows down his delivery a bit, and takes it down to 91 without any movement. He aims it at that point. But I agree when Hawk starts to do a number on someone, HE GONE!!!!! Bad mechanics sometimes are a result of compensating for injuries. His arm has been bothering him for most of this season, and maybe some of last.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 08:08 AM) I tend to agree. What was very interesting to me though, was how Ozzie was talking about Burnett yesterday with Corey McPherrin on Fox Final Word. Maybe I was trying to read between the lines too much but it sure sounded like we are right in the 72 hr. period of trying to get Burnett signed to an extension. Again, who knows, but there sure is a lot of smoke on this. And Hawk was slamming Marte yesterday. Maybe its my imagination, but Hawk never slams Marte, could he be preparing fans for his departure? One thing I can't understand about Marte is he has had a lingering arm problem this year. He comes off the DL and in almost every game since he has made an appearance or at least warmed up. I think there may have been 1 or 2 games tops where this wasn't the case. I would think they would be more cautious with him.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 08:04 AM) I agree, this could drag on a bit. One telltale sign is if any of the players are held out of games ... McCarthy, Marte ... Burnett isn't scheduled to pitch again until at least Friday so that's a non issue. No question that KW is working on more than one deal though. Papers today said he wants to upgrade (or add) in the bullpen and middle infielder (bench). This will be a fun, although probably frustrating, week for this board. Good thing quickman is out of town. It was interesting that he was in on Grafinino and Randa. If the roster hasn't changed come Sunday, it isn't for lack of effort.

There was never a 24 hour window. Levine said something could be done in the next 24 hours. I read somewhere where Florida was going to wait a couple of days before moving forward.

best method of buying tickets for a ballgame?
QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jul 25, 2005 -> 07:40 AM) As long as we are talking about getting tickets to a game, is it better to order online or get them at the park? (I am going to a game on 8/5 and if I don't order before then, I will buy tickets to the 9/24 game that day.) I think for an advanced game the inventory at the park and on ticketmaster would be the same. If you're worried prime seats for that game will be sold before now and 8/5 buy them on ticketmaster and pay the service fees. If not, just wait.

Depending on the size of the group you could call the group sales guys and you will avoid the service fees. 312 674 1000

Is Frank done for the year?
I'm sure they have all the scenerios given to them by doctors about Frank's ankle. He has already stated he won't be 100% at anytime this season. I think you have to proceed like he won't be back this season. As far as next year, I think that all depends on who the Sox acquire before the deadline and whether they sign them or not. Frank gets a $3.5 million buyout. He has been paid approximately $80 million by the White Sox during his career. He's had a great career but the last few he's been very injury-prone. He can only DH. Call it disrespectful, call it cold, we've all heard JR would never let Frank play anywhere else, but it probably is the wise thing to do at this point in time. Letting him go with a $3.5 million going away gift is far more classy than what Ron Schueler did to Carlton Fisk.

Harold Reynolds
Did you here the latest rumor? There's a chance if Phil Nevin accepts the trade to Baltimore that the Orioles release Corky.

Harold Reynolds
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 06:26 PM) Harold Reynolds has some massive connections in baseball. His brother is a big time agent, and I think Reynolds would have a pretty good feel for what's going on. If he has all these connections its puzzling why so many stupid things come out of his mouth week after week year after year. Maybe he sits too close to Gammons.

Tigers
Harold Reynolds just hopped on the Detroit bandwagon. They're toast.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 05:22 PM) Nothing official or anything. Simply said he has heard that Vizquel may end up in Chicago. Thats big to me because for the most part its been indicated that Omar isn't on the trade block. All I'm saying is that I'm excited as hell that I hear his name come up as potentially available cause he makes so much sense. I can't speak enough about how big of a pickup this would be. People can talk about his contract being a little long, but he's still producing now and whose to say he won't for the remainder. Regardless, there are plenty of worse contracts out there, and well frankl, I don't care about him being over the hill the last year of his deal, cause he's the type of guy that makes the Sox a more likely WS candidate and thats what its all about. Gio/Valido for Omar and I'll do it. I'd be more thrilled if it took less, but I'll give up some of the best prospects in the org for him. While this would be good news, it is Harold Reynolds and its mostly crap that comes out of his mouth.

Another guy who is available for next to nothing is Soriano of Texas. Of course you wouldn't want him playing secondbase much. But depending on Thomas' status he would make a pretty interesting DH with a lot of power and speed and strikeouts. Plus you could non tender him during the off season. I believe he is arb eligible. Its just a thought, I would prefer a LH bat.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!!!!!!&#
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 04:28 PM) One thing that burned me up was the WGN camera crew kept showing this one f***ing Boston fan tool with a rally cap on. I saw that. It is WGN. Great job by the Count today.

Why does Hawk seem to disappear...
Hawk's wife is up in the booth a lot. She sits in between Hawk and DJ. Maybe he goes and gets serviced.

White Sox vs. Red Sox July 24 Game Thread
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 24, 2005 -> 03:55 PM) f***ing A, Politte. Now will Hermanson pitch the 9th? No matter who's out there, they're gonna have to see at least Ortiz. I would think Marte would come in for Damon and Ortiz, unless he is already going to Florida. If the Sox do trade for Burnett in the next couple of days, his first start could ironically be against Baltimore.
