2019-2020 Official NBA Thread
Dick Allen replied to Bananarchy's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
The guy was just shocked he had any left. It really is unbelievable the Bulls just can't admit they were way off with this guy. -
Teams have way more leverage with the extensions Hahn has doled out. Many years from free agency, no guarantee of stardom, controlled, and a life changing contract. But kudos to him for taking advantage of that. There certainly are risks involved as well.
-
We will see. It will be different. It won't be wait 2 weeks, then you're good to go. It will be months. It should probably matter. 2 weeks in AAA isn't going to stunt anyone, but there comes a point when it does.
-
Of course it will. But I think they are going to have to keep guys on the farm maybe until August or September . As for the stragglers, whether they call Madrigal up the day his service time changes or a week later, they will be negotiating the new contract and know exactly what it was. If he comes up and sucks and gets sent back down, it will probably be ignored, but I bet the union is keeping their eye on guys getting manipulated now and will take care of them next deal. So holding Madrigal back for service time probably won't matter.
-
Right, but I bet the new CBA will address any straggler manipulations. Anyone who gets called up a day or two after their service time changes this season or next, will IMO, have it credited back. It's a loophole in the rules the players should have seen coming. They will use any loophole they can get. No one is ever going to be an expert on when a prospect is ready and when he is not. Some guys are ready to go, some need a little time. Some need no time. But calling someone up right after the magic day does indicate you are playing with the rules, and I think it will be addressed, and stopped now.
-
This move will certainly be eliminated next contract, and I doubt the guys who have had it happen to them will be "grandfathered" to have to be controlled the extra year. If Madrigal is ready, I bet he is on the opening day roster. They won't be able to play with service time now. Last year, they probably get away with it. But I would venture to guess moving forward, any manipulation will be addressed in the next CBA.
-
If he won, a huge can of worms would open up. Anyone who gets hot for a week or two could conceivably have a case. The only way to "fix" it is to change the service time rules, which I am sure will be done.

Yolmer is going to have a long career. He wants to start. But long term, that isn't in the cards. He can field multiple positions and is good in the clubhouse. He will be on major league rosters until he can't put up a .600 OPS.

Woj confirmed.

I think there is nothing wrong with Sox fans hating the Cubs and going out of their way to show it. For the longest time the thought was Sox fans were obsessed with the Cubs, Cubs fans didn’t care about the Sox. It was BS. Go to a Cubs/Mets game at Wrigley in the summer. Walk by the t shirt stands a block or two from Wrigley Field. You will see them well stocked with Sox Suck and the 83 logo with SUX t shirts, Since the Sox have rarely played meaningful baseball the past 50 years, a case can be made the Cubs are their biggest rivals. They do play them every year. They are in competition for the Chicago area casual baseball fan. Perhaps the pendulum can swing a bit now. If the Cubs don’t get on Comcast, it could really help the Sox if they start playing well. The Cubs have already priced themselves out of a lot of fans options. Not having them on the regular TV for a large portion of those same people could lead them south. As far as this picture. I thought it was pretty clever. Eloy and Cease being White Sox is a Cubs loss. All the more reason for an L flag.

Steve Stone Hinting At Another Move: Not Puig / Castellanos
Dick Allen replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Considering the regular LF and RF won’t be considered gold glove candidates it probably is a good idea to have a good glove on the bench. -
no one wants to waste a roster spot. Now there will probably be teams interested in a minor league deal. Maybe he will figure it isn't happening with the White Sox, maybe another team and coach has a better idea.
-
Since he has been outrighted previously, he still can refuse. I wonder what he will do.
-
No chance.

With Schilling,PEDs have never been a topic as far as I can tell, but he did accumulate about half his WAR after age 34. I know a lot of his exclusion is his politics, but. Isn’t his career trajectory a red flag? He had good years prior, but not the kind of career you would think would be a HOF consideration.Obviously he isn’t the first to have that kind of success at that age, and he won’t be the last, but that was the middle of the steroid era. To have a clean pitcher suddenly kick it up a couple of notches at age 34 is at least a little suspicious.

McDowell says White Sox/Larussa Cheated
Dick Allen replied to Look at Ray Ray Run's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think Black Jack is just upset he is the most prominent White Sox of his era the team didn’t welcome back with open arms. Ozzie and Robin managed, Big Hurt is an ambassador and does TV work, even grumpy Carlton Fisk is an ambassador. Bo Jackson the same. Tim Raines coached. he probably feels entitled to something, but it shows being a jackass to JR usually doesn’t pay off in the end. Putting things in perspective, LaRussa was fired by Hawk before Jack had begun his junior year at Stanford, -

Maybe it would have been investigated if Jack said something in 1987 or 1988 or 1990 or 1991. The guys excuse for not saying anything is hysterical, he wasn’t sure if the Sox were cheating at the new park. Now he coaches a D 2 team that can use some publicity and he is going to play hero. He also seemed to suggest LaRussa was the reason Canseco and McGwire used steroids. I can’t stand LaRussa as much as anyone, but this is ridiculous stuff. 35 states have a statute of limitations for rape which IMO is far more serious action than a light in the OF for a team that didn’t win. And they all would have expired with this timeline. I am pretty sure Black Jack himself has cheated. It sounds like he may have participated in the “scandal” he mentioned. I wouldn’t doubt if he scuffed a ball or two.....Maybe they should just suspend everybody, and call the next season off. -

Considering he didn't say anything for over 30 years, no it doesn't matter. And how about his no denial but wasn't aware of anything at the new park? Did he participate in the cheating or was it 33 year old hearsay? And if he participated, which he said starting pitchers did, he's a cheater as well, but wants to be a hero. -

This was over 30 years ago. Statute of limitations is up. C'mon Black Jack. Seems a guy is trying to make himself relevant again, and I am no fan of LaRussa. But this is ridiculous. -
Ventura returns to OkSt as “student assistant”
Dick Allen replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Most college baseball teams do not have a student coach. This is a made up position. He isn't taking anyone's spot. I;m pretty sure if someone else wanted the job, they could have two. -
Ventura returns to OkSt as “student assistant”
Dick Allen replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Can you name some student NCAA baseball coaches that went on to accomplish much in coaching? It's a ceremonial position because he is going back to finish his degree. He isn't being paid. He isn't ruining anyone's future. The guy is volunteering. He has some credibility. His title is student assistant because he is now a student, finishing up his degree. Butthurt describes you. -

Any good manager would have had a team with Austin jackson, Jimmy Rollins, Brett Lawrie and Donner Navarro up the middle in the World Series mix. -
Ventura returns to OkSt as “student assistant”
Dick Allen replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think some just have to look at facts. Yes, he did have to be talked into taking the Sox managerial job, but......there were reasons. It wasn’t that he wanted nothing to do with baseball or that he didn’t think he had anything to offer. At the time, his kids were young he wanted to be around them. He was still involved with baseball calling some college games on ESPN and had a part time role working with White Sox minor leaguers. He obviously wants to do this current thing, and I would bet knows far more about baseball than 99.999999999% of those thinking he knows very little. -

It's mind boggling how much a guy who is going back to get his degree, and volunteers as an unpaid assistant at the school where he became famous, bothers some people. Your lives can't be that pathetic. -

The Bulls have 1 win vs. a .500 or better team and that was beating the Clips playing without 3 guys in their rotation including Leonard, and playing the second half of a back to back. And they called themselves a playoff team. For the love of God Reinsdorfs, pull the plug on this regime.
