If he signs with Philadelphia, wouldn't that say the Sox were outbid since neither player supposedly wants to go there?
-
He's going to Seattle.
-
Is it just a coincidence the White Sox alleged offer is pretty much exactly the same as Jon Heyman said Manny would probably ultimately sign for last week on MLBN?
-
If it's 7 years/ $30 million a year, just add $35 million to $40 million total to it, and pretend the extra cash is Jon Jay.
-
My dad was a lawyer, and he told me the only time it was OK to lie was during negotiations.

One thing seems sure, all the hope it may reach its end today seens to be fading fast.

Sox Sign Jon Jay; 1 year/$4 mil, Charlie Tilson DFA'd

If Jay = Machado, everyone loves Jay, even those who know he isn't a very good MLB baseball player anymore. If Jay doesn't = Machado, all the Jay compliments will be forgotten quickly. -
I think Nightengale knows a bit more than posters here want to give him credit. He has broken plenty. It isn’t a bad thing to believe him. But for some reason the general consensus here is he is a hack. I don’t think that’s accurate.
-
Because Bob Nightengale, who apparently usually doesn’t know shit, said the Phillies are the favorite for Harper and may have backed off Machado.
-
But your post count is up. Which is nice.

With some of my posts about RH/KW I might have to go into witness protection,

But the White Sox benefit from the leaks. I don’t have access to the stats, but I would venture to guess this site already has more activity this January than the entire January last year. Nothing leaks, what is left to discuss....the Sox signed a minor league pitcher who used to be pretty good but he hasn’t pitched in 3 years because of all sorts of surgeries? And whether they want to admit it or not, the White Sox purposely leak things from time to time.
-
I would think the Sales and Marketing groups monitor these boards a bit. But if Baseball Ops are, that’s insane. I can save them the time right now. What all of us want is the best White Sox team possible.
-
I think Hahn is a smart guy, crappy GM, but agree he is good at negotiating contracts. The thing is, that skill doesn’t really come in play if you are up against another team offering more money. Rick Hahn isn’t going to be able to land Machado on a team friendly deal. IHe is not some guy making minimum willing to sign a life changing contract buying out arb years even if it could cost him some cash if he is all starish..Maybe he can be creative with opt outs and the like, but that might mean the Sox would either have to pay even more or Manny and his buddies might skip town before the team is really good.
-
Now they are leaking that they are upset with the leaking. I don’t know what could have changed in the last 48 hours especially with the Phillies lined up to see Harper later today. And nothing huge usually breaks on weekends, so Monday or by Wednesday seems logical.
-
Isn’t Joe Cool Man hanging out with his source today? I wouldn’t get your panties in a bunch unless he gets similar info.
-
Well if they don’t get him Brooks Boyer still has a marketing angle. We didn’t get you Manny but at least we got you his friends. i don’t know how much NotHahns source is involved, but I would imagine if they knew it was bleak so would someone else and it would get out.
-
Or it could be a lot of the Phillies front office has a Baltimore background and they needed a coach , are very familiar with him,so they brought him in.
-
Not in that stratosphere.
-
I hope to God Manny doesn’t sign with the White Sox based on the nightlife.we need him to be effective.
-
It’s a ton of money, but money he will never spend. I don’t blame players for taking the highest offer, but at some point, it all becomes the same in really. I get parents want to leave their kids on easy street. But you also want them to be useful members of society. Manny should hav plenty to leave his kids. Right now it is about records and ego which is fine.
-
From what Heyman was saying yesterday, he thinks he ultimately signs for 8/$240-250 million, which would not be a record in any way. I think a team could sign him tonight for as little as 7 years if they offered him a record AAV. Face it, that is what this is all about. This is money Manny’s heirs will be squabbling over 50 or 60 years from now. An extra $30 million isn’t going to change his lifestyle, but it would cater to his ego.
-
Because there is always a chance. No one thought Pujols was going to the Angels until it was announced. No one thought Cano would go to Seattle. No one had Greinke in AZ. It just takes one. And if you are an owner and have to overpay, wouldn’t you rather overpay a guy like this vs. someone in the next tier or 2 below? They already have $13 million in, they need to get to the finish line.
-
The only ream I could think of is Miami. They have no payroll and he can live at home. If there is one place he may pay for himself, it’s there IMO. But usually teams are a mystery because they are figments of ones imagination.

Supposedly he was born with some defect in his knees. Once they were cleaned up, it isn’t supposed to be a lingering problem.
