QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) Yeah the players like it here but the fear is lack of exposure and marketing opportunities Players go where the money is. If the White Sox offer the best contract, the player will sign. The organization has a good rep among players. If not, you wouldn't have seen all the team friendly deals. The problem is, the White Sox try to get guys to sign for less because they can't spend $1 if they only have $.50. That isn't going to work for Machado. He is also going to have union pressure to get the most he can get.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:35 AM) https://mobile.twitter.com/scottmerkin/stat...329771035807744 So either this is mostly BS or they have guys like Avi and Abreu included in their package.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Rodon and Anderson for Machado sounds good to me. Baltimore taking Rodon isn't going to happen.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:24 AM) We all have to take a deep breath and realize that Hahn is not going to allow the Sox to get fleeced just to have Machado for one season. There's more going on here than we can currently see in rumors. Is Castillo really Machado's best friend? I do know Ozzie and his sons do know Machado from Miami. So they could have a little more info about his intentions. But this is a guy who is going to get paid at least top 4 of all time. Money talks. Why would he go this far and not test the open market?

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 09:08 AM) I like our minor league pick, but I just can't believe we didn't take a flyer on one of the 100 mph arm guys for the bullpen. Like, I know at some point Al Albuquerque will be back and we'll be watching him pitch instead of some guy with an actual arm and not-fake name. Yeah, I don't get that at all. If worse comes to worse, you offer them back. It's not a large investment and there is tons of space on the team.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 08:42 AM) That's terrible unless were also buying Burdi It was a little weird the Sox took an OF. They have plenty of those types for 2018. I am a bit shocked the organization that made us watch Dylan Covey, didn't draft a couple of these other pitchers with a wide open bullpen.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 08:26 AM) I honestly just don't get this. If you want Machado so badly, just be offer him the most amount of money in the off-season next year. Does the White Sox organization have such a great culture that he will begging to stay with us if we traded for him? I doubt it. This move just seems to contrary to everything Hahn has done the last year plus. I agree 100%. You spend all this time acquiring assets, now to trade them for a probable rental, since apparently you are selling culture over money, is exactly the opposite of what you have been doing. Most of the guys they traded have more control than Machado, and I love Machado. I really think, especially if he moves back to SS, he can be the best player in baseball. But you have to pay him if you want him. Keep your prospects and pay him when it's time. You can give him a nice presentation, and then offer him the most money and he will sign with you. If you aren't prepared to do that, he's gone anyway, and that is some more rebuilding time.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 08:24 AM) Sox lost no one in the ML phase But Guerrero's FIP in AA.

GarPax would sell this pick. Build up some capital with/for ownership.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 07:27 AM) Not trump money; compliment the money. It is interesting to note that the White Sox, except for Freddy Garcia, really haven't brought in a potential free agent, to "see the culture", but even that trade was about immediate winning. Machado will love the White Sox culture as long as they offer him the most money next winter.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 06:30 AM) Why do you think they believe he will give them a discount? Because they are willing to trade assets to get him here to "see the culture", believing that it will trump money. Just remember, his agent got Albert Pujols out of STL, which shocked the world. There are a lot of nice places to play MLB. Money is what talks. If they are prepared to offer him the most money, it makes no sense to trade assets for him now.

All I know is a guy who loved playing here and was beloved by fans, Paulie Konerko, checked out the open market. Why wouldn't Machado? It is going to happen anyway. I am a season ticket holder and prefer to attend games the Sox win. Machado, especially if he goes back to SS, has a chance to be the best player in baseball. So that would be good for me. Hahn was quoted as saying this was the tough part of the rebuild, and patience was the guy. They are doing the total opposite now. Obviously their dream was to add Machado. Keep the talent, and pay him more later. That is the patient thing to do. It is ridiculous to think he is giving them a discount.
-
According to the Athletic article they can have one of Giolito, Kopech but not both. This is pretty insane if it happens. I really don't know why they believe having him play there willl get him signed , and not lessens their chances. Money talks. If they think he will love,Ricky Renteria so much he will accept a lowball offer, they need to be replaced. If you are going to make,us,sit through a rebuild, follow.theough, and come up with an offer next winter. If they do this and it fails, heads should roll.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 08:40 PM) I have a feeling he may not have seen Hahn's comments today. I think he is probably right. I think it is just a token effort to get their name attached to his for next year.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 08:33 PM) Because he isn’t interested in the second contracts with those players Well, he has given the line about years of control and their window of winning. It is inconsistent. It would be a ballsy move, but if trades 2 or 3 of his new prized possessions and Machado flees in a year, it is a total disaster.
-
If Hahn truly feels having him for a year will make it easier to sign him, why has he been affected by others contract status who actually have longer terms? Why would he be concerned about Chris Sale, he would know the culture and fall in love with resigning for less. The 2 years left with Avi and Abreu wouldn't be an issue.
-
QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 08:01 PM) Lol. "Giolito, Lopez, plus” is literally what it took for the Nats to get Adam Eaton for FIVE YEARS and you’re saying that same package MIGHT get one season of Machado? Yes. Although I could see it being one of those guys, Tim Anderson, and maybe some lottery ticket. Could you imagine the outrage on this board if Hahnhad Machado and traded him for a package centered around Blake Rutherford?
-
QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 07:55 PM) Correct. I believe the question was the level of "acceptance" Sox fans would have in the type of package that would be sent over. Rutherford seemed like that level. No one said that is what they expect it would cost. If that is the level, then if this trade happened, they won't be happy.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 07:46 PM) Rutherford was a top 50 prospect as recently as last July. Not sure I get the comparison to Kevan Smith. Was is the key word. .674 OPS in A ball doesn't get you Manny Machado. It is beyond ridiculous. Giolito, Lopez, plus might do the job.
-
I think the White Sox are just doing this for show. No way they get Machado without giving up multiple top prospects, and almost assuredly going to the open market in a year. They get to show him how much they want him and not tamper.
-
Why in the world would the Orioles want Rutherford for Machado? Am I missing something here? If this type of trade is available, why doesn't Hahn send Kevan Smith to Washington for Harper?

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:38 PM) This new DNC is on fire. I love it. Such a Perez/Ellison tag team fanboy right now. Their GOTV, voter outreach and campaign plans have been paying huge dividends so far. Dems are +15 nationwide in a generic ballot in a new poll today as well. This could be tsunami if Trump remains in office and keeps acting Trumpy. Trump has a 47% approval rating in Alabama and he is 0-2 in elections there. You have to figure his approval rating in that state can't be higher anywhere else. He is poison to a campaign. The longer he's around, IMO, the better it will be for dems elections moving forward. I have the feeling once these tax cuts occur though, he is going to start to get hit from the right. If Trump leaving in disgrace is the consolation prize, it's still OK for most, but some of the collateral damage will not be able to be fixed. People are going to die because of him. People are going to lose a lot because of him, and sadly many of those people are people who believed his BS and voted for him.

Sox interested in Jose Bautista per Phil Rogers
Dick Allen replied to EvilJester99's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Unless he was hurt, Joey Bats is done. Numbers down across the board and his strikeouts skyrocketed. Perhaps he can find a better steroid mix.
