I doubt the cash considerations will cover lunch. His defense has been slipping. He can't hit with power, doesn't hit for average, doesn't make much contact, doesn't get on base, and doesn't steal many bases. He was going to be a mediocre placeholder at best.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 06:05 PM) Spring Training is definitely too long. Start 2 weeks later and schedule extra split squad games. It needs to be longer for pitchers, and I think it was longer yet this year for the WBC. What they should do is IMO give position players the option of going home for 5 days or a week at some point. You could stagger it a bit, maybe base it's length on service time.

I love golf.I don't think I'd ever see Turnberry again. I don't ever think I'd see Doral again. I own Doral. I wouldn't have time to golf. I would just want to stay in the White House work my ass off and make great deals.--DJT

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) Yes I even read the article when you wrote it and your efforts to do so are commendable. However, I did not commit it to memory. At this point the other thing we can reasonably assume is that the Sox will be in seriously involved since we have seen no activity regarding other prospects and your own thoughts re: Badler. I just am never really very confident that the Sox (based on some of SSk2 arguments) and my own realizations that the Sox do have a history of not making winning bids. Some have even accused the Sox of making token bids just to say they made a competitive offer. I just find it a terrible situation . Either he signs with the Sox or the Sox get nothing since they have not been connected to any other prospects that we know . They really need to keep the international pipeline functioning and getting nothing should be a completely out of the question option. Go big or go home is not a luxury the Sox can afford when they need all the prospects they can pump into the system. That aspect of the organization has been bone dry for too long for it to continue now. The tough part, although they probably have a better idea than us, is we don't know when he will be available. But it's money and the reality is it's a 1 year penalty not 2 if you sign him if he becomes eligible for the current period, because if you sign him after the July 2 period, you aren't signing anyone else over $300k anyway, and might not be signing anyone else period, to have a shot. To get him and better prospects, the only way is to have him eligible earlier. If he is late and you sign him, he's pretty much alone. As long as the cash is there, take the penalty, but you still would be able to sign about 10 more players to $300k contracts than if he was cleared later. Although it would cost a boatload more.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 01:28 PM) Looking at this video, it's pretty obvious now as to why he has foot issues. Look at how much tibial varum (the bowing in) he has in his lower leg. His bone structure adds stress to either his knee or his feet. His issues manifested in his feet. This is not an easy issue to fix. He also has flat feet.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 01:07 PM) But everything is different now, no? But you used a stadium as an example of something he would never do, probably forgetting it was something he did. But they don't need a stadium. They could use a 19 year old top of the line prospect CF. You should occassionally try some new things. You might not be so bitter.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) Excellent, when are we breaking ground? After the lease expires at the earliest. But he's done it so I guess that means it will probably keep happening. If he had never of done it, it means it will never happen.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 01:01 PM) Just because your 400 pound girlfriend lost 20 pounds you shouldn't expect her to be Kate Upton. The White Sox have a nearly 40 year history of this ownership group. Expecting a wide variance of that is the definition of out of control expectations. JR has ever handed out free beer either, should I expect that soon? Maybe paying for a brand new stadium of his own pocket? Oh like the United Center? They don't spend money on draft picks yet they gave Joe Borchard a then record bonus which continued to be a record for a few years. It's happened. If he's declared early, I don't expect the White Sox to sign him. But sitting out is inexcusable.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 12:51 PM) Only if he goes on the 60 day DL, which he won't if they plan on him being back before June. If he is going to be in a boot for 3 weeks, he isn't back until the middle of May at best anyway, and it's Charlie Tillson. I say do it.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) Expectations have gotten out of control for this franchise. Yes. It's crazy to expect a team that is slashing payroll, going into a total rebuild to bid on what many consider the second best international prospect in the world because it might cost them a 16 year old or 2 the next couple of years. Out of control expectation.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) In your made-up imaginary argumentative hypothetical the White Sox history isn't the same as it is today. My theory doesn't change at all, the circumstances do. The circumstances have changed for the White Sox, so everything they did it the past is up for review. If Robert is declared before the next signing period and they don't make a decent effort to get him, I personally will very dissappointed. Signing him depends on the dollars. Like I wrote before, I won't blame them if his price was the same as Moncada's. $60 million is a lot of money, and $30 million of that to the league right away kind of sucks. If it's half that and they weren't in the ballpark, pitchforks should be out.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:36 AM) Absolutely. I think the teams who are already out for the next two years realize that Robert is quite literally their last chance at a quality signing for the next two years. I think that factor makes a team who is out as of July 2 much more likely to push the bidding higher knowing that this is their last chance for two years. Answering that absolutely goes back on your theory. Since when did money not matter to the White Sox, and since when would spending $60 million make them more likely to spend another $40-50 million? At some point the Padres would be tapped. And you can still sign guys to $300k contracts. Not bad cash to a 16 year old. And these 16 year olds are so far away anyway. It's not like 4 years from now they are staples in your line up. a 19 year old, as well regarded as Robert, is far more attractive. The Sox spent a lot on Adolfo. It's going to be a while before he pays off. I don't think the 2 year penalty is a hindrance to any team. It's the final dollars.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) I think it is lunacy to just assume because we changed in one area, than to assume suddenly this is a franchise that is going to blow away free agency, and international market. History is a much better indication than just because of one thing. White Sox once set a record when they signed Joe Borchard. Did anyone really expect the White Sox to give Jose Abreu the biggest contract in team history? They flew to Japan and were negotiating with Tanaka. I don't think anyone is assuming the White Sox will sign Robert. I think we are assuming that if he is eligible before the next signing period, the White Sox are still very interested and would be willing to do something they have never done. Obviously it depends on the ultimate price, but a lot of stars are aligning just like with the Abreu signing. And if the White Sox had done what they had never done and had already blown through their pool by $30 million, do you really think that would make them more likely to sign Robert?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) The Padres have been winning player after player. The White Sox haven't. I'd bet on the team that has a history. They are already about $30 million over their pool. So they have another $30 million in penalties. I really doubt they can go too high with this guy. Another $15-20 million to write to the player, and $15-20 million to write to the league, doesn't seem like a Padres thing.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) The Padres have a $55 million payroll for 2017. The White Sox have a $90 million payroll. It would be very easy to argue that the Padres should be the early signing favorite for a few reason. #1 they already have gone over the caps this session, and literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain by bringing in every single player they can before June 15. They also have a lot less payroll spent in this period giving them the ability to spend a bit more than the white Sox have. According to the Forbes list, the Padres actually have a slight overall revenue advantage as of 2016, so the $35 million difference in payroll is significant as to their relative spending abilities. How come you aren't including what the Padres already spent and have been penalized this signing period? If you take what already has occured, that $35 million advantage you are speculating, is already long gone.

QUOTE (Blackout Friday @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 04:39 AM) He might carve out a career as a nice 4th outfielder, which is nothing to scoff at. For his and his family's sake, it's nothing to scoff at. For fans that expect their team to win every year, it's pretty meh.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 07:44 AM) They really aren't competing with very rich organizations. If they want Robert, they can go get him. It's that simple. I've outlined how in multiple posts and even wrote an article for FutureSox about the prospects of doing so. Yes, there are some of the bigger spenders are out either way. It all depends on what he gets. If he gets what Moncada got, $30 million plus $30 million penalty, I'd be shocked the Sox won the bidding. But Boston can't offer that. Who can? If he is as good as many think, he fits in perfectly with any team, and is exactly the type of player the White Sox are looking to add. Acquiring him is like having an extra #1/1 pick in the draft or an extra ace to trade.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 06:51 AM) The overwhelming majority of Trump's base just do not have the mental capacity to realize just how moronic it was for Trump to disrespect Merkel that way, holy crap. Trump has always thought paying bills was optional. I'm sure he would understand if she passed on that one. What has always amazed me is how many people find this guy to be the greatest dealmaker, business man ever, just because he says so. He has screwed so many people along the way and made so many feel like suckers, why this wasn't beaten into our heads during the primaries and general election is beyond me. We are getting what everyone else got when they made a deal with him, pretty much screwed. He's a total con, has been a total con, and always will be a total con. When he was a candidate screaming about how bad Obamacare was, he didn't even know what it was, just that it had to be repealed and replaced. Remember when he tried to sound like he had a clue and said his employees didn't use it much because they didn't like it?

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 03:24 PM) Just seems odd that the Sox organization was getting tons of praise for ALL the prospects we picked up in the two major trades and now we suddenly get some negativity. I bet the writer is a Nats fan You can always find a scout that is down on just about any prospect. I bet there aren't anymore than 2 prospects today where you can't fairly easily find a scout who is a bit skeptical if you want to write about it. And the same is true the other way. There are guys you know have no chance but they are still there in a uniform because someone sees something. There have been very few unanamous can't misses.

QUOTE (Username @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) Yeah if he dies and passes it along, the "basis" of the asset should step-up: i.e. his heirs wouldn't have to pay as much in long-term capital gains taxes when they sell it, since they received the asset at its current value. Its an interesting component of the tax system. They want to put a gigantic basis number on that the estate tax man will be looking for a ckeck.only JR really knows how much of the team he owns.
-
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) I think this statement is entirely wrong. But feel free to keep repeating it every single time. Two words for you: TAX HIT if he sells before he passes on. That is all. Mark I wasn't aware taxes a White Sox sale would incur while JR is alive go away once he is dead. It would be interesting to see the percentage of ownership breakdown within his group.
