  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) In your made-up imaginary argumentative hypothetical the White Sox history isn't the same as it is today. My theory doesn't change at all, the circumstances do. The circumstances have changed for the White Sox, so everything they did it the past is up for review. If Robert is declared before the next signing period and they don't make a decent effort to get him, I personally will very dissappointed. Signing him depends on the dollars. Like I wrote before, I won't blame them if his price was the same as Moncada's. $60 million is a lot of money, and $30 million of that to the league right away kind of sucks. If it's half that and they weren't in the ballpark, pitchforks should be out.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:36 AM) Absolutely. I think the teams who are already out for the next two years realize that Robert is quite literally their last chance at a quality signing for the next two years. I think that factor makes a team who is out as of July 2 much more likely to push the bidding higher knowing that this is their last chance for two years. Answering that absolutely goes back on your theory. Since when did money not matter to the White Sox, and since when would spending $60 million make them more likely to spend another $40-50 million? At some point the Padres would be tapped. And you can still sign guys to $300k contracts. Not bad cash to a 16 year old. And these 16 year olds are so far away anyway. It's not like 4 years from now they are staples in your line up. a 19 year old, as well regarded as Robert, is far more attractive. The Sox spent a lot on Adolfo. It's going to be a while before he pays off. I don't think the 2 year penalty is a hindrance to any team. It's the final dollars.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:40 AM) I think it is lunacy to just assume because we changed in one area, than to assume suddenly this is a franchise that is going to blow away free agency, and international market. History is a much better indication than just because of one thing. White Sox once set a record when they signed Joe Borchard. Did anyone really expect the White Sox to give Jose Abreu the biggest contract in team history? They flew to Japan and were negotiating with Tanaka. I don't think anyone is assuming the White Sox will sign Robert. I think we are assuming that if he is eligible before the next signing period, the White Sox are still very interested and would be willing to do something they have never done. Obviously it depends on the ultimate price, but a lot of stars are aligning just like with the Abreu signing. And if the White Sox had done what they had never done and had already blown through their pool by $30 million, do you really think that would make them more likely to sign Robert?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) The Padres have been winning player after player. The White Sox haven't. I'd bet on the team that has a history. They are already about $30 million over their pool. So they have another $30 million in penalties. I really doubt they can go too high with this guy. Another $15-20 million to write to the player, and $15-20 million to write to the league, doesn't seem like a Padres thing.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) The Padres have a $55 million payroll for 2017. The White Sox have a $90 million payroll. It would be very easy to argue that the Padres should be the early signing favorite for a few reason. #1 they already have gone over the caps this session, and literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain by bringing in every single player they can before June 15. They also have a lot less payroll spent in this period giving them the ability to spend a bit more than the white Sox have. According to the Forbes list, the Padres actually have a slight overall revenue advantage as of 2016, so the $35 million difference in payroll is significant as to their relative spending abilities. How come you aren't including what the Padres already spent and have been penalized this signing period? If you take what already has occured, that $35 million advantage you are speculating, is already long gone.
  6. QUOTE (Blackout Friday @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 04:39 AM) He might carve out a career as a nice 4th outfielder, which is nothing to scoff at. For his and his family's sake, it's nothing to scoff at. For fans that expect their team to win every year, it's pretty meh.
  7. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 07:44 AM) They really aren't competing with very rich organizations. If they want Robert, they can go get him. It's that simple. I've outlined how in multiple posts and even wrote an article for FutureSox about the prospects of doing so. Yes, there are some of the bigger spenders are out either way. It all depends on what he gets. If he gets what Moncada got, $30 million plus $30 million penalty, I'd be shocked the Sox won the bidding. But Boston can't offer that. Who can? If he is as good as many think, he fits in perfectly with any team, and is exactly the type of player the White Sox are looking to add. Acquiring him is like having an extra #1/1 pick in the draft or an extra ace to trade.
  8. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 06:51 AM) The overwhelming majority of Trump's base just do not have the mental capacity to realize just how moronic it was for Trump to disrespect Merkel that way, holy crap. Trump has always thought paying bills was optional. I'm sure he would understand if she passed on that one. What has always amazed me is how many people find this guy to be the greatest dealmaker, business man ever, just because he says so. He has screwed so many people along the way and made so many feel like suckers, why this wasn't beaten into our heads during the primaries and general election is beyond me. We are getting what everyone else got when they made a deal with him, pretty much screwed. He's a total con, has been a total con, and always will be a total con. When he was a candidate screaming about how bad Obamacare was, he didn't even know what it was, just that it had to be repealed and replaced. Remember when he tried to sound like he had a clue and said his employees didn't use it much because they didn't like it?

  11. Renteria bunting. In Spring Training.
  12. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 03:24 PM) Just seems odd that the Sox organization was getting tons of praise for ALL the prospects we picked up in the two major trades and now we suddenly get some negativity. I bet the writer is a Nats fan You can always find a scout that is down on just about any prospect. I bet there aren't anymore than 2 prospects today where you can't fairly easily find a scout who is a bit skeptical if you want to write about it. And the same is true the other way. There are guys you know have no chance but they are still there in a uniform because someone sees something. There have been very few unanamous can't misses.
  13. QUOTE (Username @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 01:05 PM) Yeah if he dies and passes it along, the "basis" of the asset should step-up: i.e. his heirs wouldn't have to pay as much in long-term capital gains taxes when they sell it, since they received the asset at its current value. Its an interesting component of the tax system. They want to put a gigantic basis number on that the estate tax man will be looking for a ckeck.only JR really knows how much of the team he owns.
  14. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) I think this statement is entirely wrong. But feel free to keep repeating it every single time. Two words for you: TAX HIT if he sells before he passes on. That is all. Mark I wasn't aware taxes a White Sox sale would incur while JR is alive go away once he is dead. It would be interesting to see the percentage of ownership breakdown within his group.
  15. And it begins. Trump tweeted to watch Jeanine Pirro on Fox News last night. She called on Paul Ryan to step down.
  16. This isn't MLB related but after I worked out, I watched a little bit of the Florida LSU game at my health club. In the 2nd inning the LSU pitcher hit 2 guys. The announcer made a big deal about it because he had hit 1 all season. The the color man Kyle Peterson gave some good insight. He said they both occurred on pitches inside. Tim McCarver would be beaming.
  17. Over 200 Iraqi civilians killed by US air strikes. Probably just the first step in quickly getting rid of ISIS. Commander in Chief is on a roll. Believe me.
  18. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 04:55 PM) I'm no expert, but I'm not sure comparing someone's velocity in spring training to their velocity during the middle of the regular season is very fair. Especially the first couple of weeks of spring training. He has mechanical issues to sort our. he has some red flags, but I don't think throwing only 93 the first few weeks of spring training is one of them.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) Trump workin' hard https://twitter.com/BraddJaffy/status/845654354308812801 Unlike Obama he is working for the people getting s*** done, maybe grabbing a few p*****s.
  20. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 12:11 PM) I was just pulling off Fangraphs, which didn't include that. I assumed he was injured. He probably won't amount to much, but he's at least intriguing. I got heat as well for saying Putnam could be something when the Sox picked him off the scrapheap, looking at his K:BB from similar samples, despite a pretty gaudy ERA. Swarzak isn't as intriguing, given his long history of bleh, but as I said maybe he changed something. It's at least worth a topic with one of the beat writers saying he has a shot of making the team. I doubt he makes the team for the 40 man roster's sake alone.
  21. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) Try again, Dick. I didn't blow off his 2015 minor numbers, he only had 5 innings pitched (5 strikeouts, a walk and 2 runs, if you're interested). I'll always use SIERA if it's available, I used FIP because SIERA or xFIP isn't available for the minor leagues. I don't particularly like FIP when you have such a clear outlier of a HR/FB. I obviously didn't go back over the rest of his career because if the rest of his career had been like that, he wouldn't have been available to the Sox. Maybe he changed something. And FYI he's still with the Sox because the Sox like him. No mention of his Korean League stint in 2015. He is on a minor league contract. If 5 is too few innings what is the cutoff? 13 innings and 9 innings in games that don't count made your list. You won't be bumping this thread several months from now. The guy sucks.
  22. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 11:07 AM) His ERA spike last year seems to be mostly due to a fairly ridiculous 27.8% homer per fly ball rate (career 9.7%). They're cherry-picked to the extent that they're the first stats I look for in a reliever, in addition to GB% (which he's average at). Tommy Kahnle can't throw strikes, which is probably the reason why Kahnle got optioned to AAA while Swarzak is still with the team. You blew off his minor league numbers in 2015, focused on 13 innings in the major leagues. Used FIP for minor league numbers last year, but used SiERRA for his major league number, I am guessing because his FIP was over 6.00.. And are using spring training stats in games that don't count against AA players this year, and pretty much blew off the rest of the 31 year olds career. They are as cherry picked as can be. The reason this guy hasn't been optioned is because he already is a minor leaguer. His last 44 1/3 MLB innings he has 44 strikeouts. Other than that, he's pretty much been meat.
  23. Joakim Noah suspended 20 games for taking a banned over the counter supplement. I guess it isn't banned under the new CBA.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 10:11 AM) It isn't the spring training results nearly as much as the why. There are serious questions about his mechanics and ability to repeat pitches. Those are very serious and legitimate problems. The good news is this guy is huge and It's not uncommon for really huge guys to take longer refining mechanics. But a lot of times they never do, so we will see. If he is as good as Keith Law thought a year ago, the Sox did fine.
  25. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) If Lopez ends up being a 3+ WAR starter, that alone would be a win for us. If you believe our realistic competive window is from 2020 to 2024, then Eaton would have only fit in for two of those years and likely would have been a declining speed-based player by that point. Lopez would be part of our core for at least four of those years and be in his prime. This is why it made sense to move Eaton despite his five years of control, as two and likely three of them would be wasted on a rebuilding club. Having said all that, I'd personally be dissapointed if that's all we got out of an Eaton trade. You are assuming several things. One that Eaton's decline will be swift and sharp, and that over the next several years and even last winter, the package the White Sox received for Adam Eaton couldn't have been topped. Prospects break your heart. If Giolito is a bust, and if anyone bases his bust potential on spring training, that is really something, this trade should not have been made. And if anyone thinks Lopez is a future star based on spring training, that is insane too. For it to be a good trade IMO at least 2 of them have to be good. In August we all might decide this trade was awesome or awful, and even then may still be way off. projecting pitchers 4 and 5 years out is a very difficult thing.
