You are putting way to much into this. We see it all the time, we criticize if guys faile, but when there is a runner at second and nobody out, the hitter "has a job to do". That doesn't change with a runner at first. Melky is going to be expected to hit the ball the other way to, at the very least, advance the runners. He thought a bunt would advance the runners and give him a pretty good shot at a hit. It is pretty simple, the runners advanced, Frazier failed. Lawrie hit a rocket but it was caught. It wasn't so stupid. He wasn't giving himself up anymore than a guy making sure he is going to the right side would anyway, which is considered good baseball, and if there is a runner on second and he hits a ground ball to 3rd, unless he has a couple of strikes in him, he is rightfully going to get ripped.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 06:26 PM) If Melky was bunting for a hit, Robin apparently thought differently: "He decided to do that on his own," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "He's up there sensing the situation, and I think he thought we could get on the board early by getting them over. It's something that you look at either way. But he decided to do on his own." His choice of words makes it sound like to me that he was sacrificing. And no I don't think you're a bad guy, don't even know you, and for that matter you don't know me. Maybe we're both just "meathead" fans? Mark Right getting them over, a baseball play. It doesn't mean he was sacrificing. He was trying to get a hit. Like when there is a guy on second and nobody out, and hitters try to hit it to the right side. They want to make sure at the very least the runner gets to 3rd. They aren't sacrificing. Melky was trying to bunt for a hit, and at the very least advance the runners.who knows if it cost the team runs, but it did have the same effect as if he had hit a ball caught at the wall and the runners advanced.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 05:35 PM) Cause I'm a fan. Cause Royals fans here mock me because I root for such a pathetic baseball team owned by the KC team. Please Ventura, tell your team: NO MORE BUNTING EVER. They cannot bunt. Even though we rarely score no matter what we do at the plate, at least eliminate bunting. Guys cannot do it so tell them NEVER do it. It actually was a real good bunt, Duffy made a nice play and barely got him, and somehow the Sox can win the series tomorrow. What I do find funny is the 100% chance Melky would have driven in a run there if he didn't bunt. Anyome catch his other ABs vs. Duffy?

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 05:19 PM) My only comment is this. Regarding the bunt in the first inning. It doesn't matter if Melky did it on his own or Robin called it. Doesn't matter if he was bunting for a hit or to sacrifice. You have a clean up hitter hitting .215!!!! Who strikes out a lot coming up to bat next. This isn't Frank Thomas and his .300 average with a great knowledge of the strike zone is it? Or a Magglio or Carlos Lee...guys who were hitting .280, .290 or over .300 Melky or Robin or whomever should know the clean up hitters capabilities. That's not smart baseball in my opinion. Mark Maybe maybe not. He was trying for a hit which would have loaded the bases with no outs. Ducks on the pond and one out and your 4 and 5 guy up, you should get runs. It seems the one person who doesn't know the clean up hitter's capabilities is you. If he was sacrificing, he would have shown it to make sure he would have bunted to the 3rd base side. You always want the 3rd baseman fielding a bunt with a runner advancing to 3rd. If he only got it slightly harder, he would have beaten it out, but bunting to first in a sacrifice situation with a gold glove left handed first baseman wouldn't make much sense .

Amderson's swing kind of reminds me Alfonso Soriano, although I think Soriano was closed.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 03:52 PM) Serious question. After watching the game do you honestly think they care about winning series? These guys show up to get a paycheck. They have every reason to want to kick KC's ass and they look like the deadest team in America. If you don't think they care, why should you?

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 04:58 PM) Highlight reel worthy. So brilliant to take the bat out of your three hitters hand in the first inning. You do know that wasn't called from the bench don't you? He was bunting for a hit.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 11:15 AM) When I wear the autographed Snopek jersey people ask me why I signed my own jersey. The one people love is the signed Warren Newsome jersey. Anything Deacon related is a good thing.

I have a game worn Paulino I bought for $20. It is pretty large, but I had to get it since I was one of his biggest detractors. I wore it a couple of weeks ago, and a guy in a Dunn jersey told me he loved it. Everyone has replicas of the big names. I pay a fraction for an authentic and am the only guy in the park with a Paulino on.

Sports Media discussion
Danny Mac needs to ride into the sunset. After he was suspended he was relegated to reading a 3 minute sports segment once an hour. What is the show on 4 hours? So 12 minutes of work a day for $250k a year, and he wants to go Muskie fishing.

Zack Collins agrees to deal with White Sox
QUOTE (ronkark @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 06:29 PM) Love all I've read about the bat. As far as catching. Hm. Thats a tough one. We haven't had good D catcher in a long long time. No flowers was not. No one can contain run game either. So it does worry me you have him at C and Anderson at SS who is sub par defensively. Not to mention Abreu. lot of pressure on all others to be elite. BUT I love the idea of a catch who is a plus bat. That is huge. Throwing for a catcher these days isn't hat large of a concern. The stolen base is going the way of the Do do bird. If his bat is that good, you probably don't want him catching much anyways.

Austin Jackson miniscus surgury, Webb TJ surgery, Petricka out for sea
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) When it rains it pours. Now the Sox are going through injuries like Kansas City and Cleveland. We'll see if they have any kind of depth to alleviate things. Mark If you could choose a starting OF the Sox would lose for up to 6 weeks, Jackson would be the unanimous choice. Webb would be a unanimous choice for a pitcher to lose for the season, and Petricka would be close to unanimous. So while it stings, it could be a lot worse.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 06:05 PM) There's an undeniable stench of desperation coming from Hahn's office It does seem like they are shuffling the deck. Maybe something is coming. I wonder who the 6th starter is now. I know some are excited about Renaudo but he has done exactly what he is doing in AAA now before the Rangers called him up, and he made Noesi look good. Turner hasn't been impressive. Maybe Latos goes to Charlotte. It will be fun to see Anderson, but he is being put in a situation in which he has to produce right away. Maybe he takes it and runs with it, but I would expect growing pains.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 04:21 PM) I heard this guy named Ian Desmond was willing to sign for $8 million (and he would have picked the Sox over the Rangers to stay at SS), and also has the ability to play LF/RF. Gee...sounds like someone we could have used. And it would have preserved Anderson's timeframe for September, 2016 arrival. We shall see how it all works, and if Burdi makes it all worth it. Did you or did you not call for the White Sox to sign Ian Desmond if he was available after the draft?

Someone else had a hip impingement a couple of weeks ago and was lost for the year. It made me wonder about Petricka. Webb is no loss, but don't TJ guys sometimes have issues with command when they come back? He won't be able to throw a strike. As soon as Jackson got going offensively he breaks down. That is disappointing but it could be worse, if you are going to lose 3 guys in a day, this is in at least the 85 percentile of good.

Hahn/Hostetler with shot across KW's bow
QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 02:23 PM) I recall seeing Kruk standing outside of the visitor's dugout at Wrigley back in the late '80s or early '90s, smoking and eating Ding-Dongs. He was a treasure. And he could hit. Dick Vitale for basketball used to have his all airport team. They were guys who where incredible physical specimens, but couldn't play a lick. They looked great at the airport. That describes some of the guys the Sox have drafted over the years.

Hahn/Hostetler with shot across KW's bow
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) I laughed hysterically when I saw that interview. Working in the league in the late 80's-early 90's it was true. It really changed now though. There is no question these guys are on strength and conditioning programs now. Just from the season ticketholder events where you get to go into the clubhouses you see how it's not a candy store anymore. But I want a guy who knows what he is doing on the field. It seems to me most guys who miss development time playing football or basketball at the college level, have a hard time catching up. The great thing about baseball is you don't have to necessarily be the biggest guy or strongest or fastest. Sure it can help. You can look like a normal guy and still be a great player.

QUOTE (CB2.0 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 01:39 PM) Right! Which means that with Latos at #5 for $3M and only this year committed...was this move really necessary? No. Possibly not, but they concluded Latos wouldn't provide them with what is needed, and many here agreed. I think it is unfair to make conclusions about James Shields after 2 innings. If it continues, yes. But it's one bad game at a pretty unfortunate time.

***Official MLB Draft 2016 Day 2 Thread***
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 01:52 PM) They've really stayed with college guys though. Isn't Thompson the only high school kid on your list? Although last year they took some high school guys as I recall. Zangari and crew I believe. Hostetler supposedly is more likely to draft a HS kid than the previous regime. I just think this is the way his board went down.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) No not necessarily hitting but with safe high floor college players as opposed to low floor athletic types. Hopefully, they took who they thought was the BPA not just that type of hitter because they wanted one. I think it was under Schueler, although it may have been KW, where one year they were going for mostly pitchers figuring if several panned out, they could flip them for offense. Schueler didn't draft well at all, but he was good at trades and signing vets to make good contracts.
