If you thought the subprime mortgage crisis was bad...
Harry Chappas replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(iamshack @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) This is the EXACT reason the credit system is in place! To prevent people from being sucked in by smooth advertising campaigns, salesmen, and their own stupidity. It is NOT supposed to operate with salesmen and lenders manipulating the credit system to circumvent it. I can't go in to a Porsche dealer and just say "I can afford to put 15k down and pay $1500/mo." Now here is my actual income, this is my credit rating (which doesn't come close to backing up my actual statement to him). Make it happen, no matter what you have to do. The Porsche dealer will get you what you want if your credit and income is good enough. Somehow she was able to save $30K therefore the dealer will believe her if she feels she can make the payments. She agreed to a monthly amount that they gave her. She needs to know if she can actually pay that amount and then agree to it. Somehow she had $30K. The real sad part of this is that after the lease ran out she would still be out $30K then what would she do. I do not lease cars so I am not sure what happens at the end. -

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) No it doesn't change that. But again, does that mean that there are no victims of fraud? We could sit back and say anyone who falls victim to a con man should have known better, so they are at fault? She couldn't afford it, and the lender would not have approved the application she signed. The lender approved the altered application. Does that count for anything? She had $30K cash, good credit and agreed to a fixed monthly amount. How exactly was she misled/conned? Every dealer is going to get you to tell them what you want to pay a month and get you a car that makes them the most money they can for that amount. She did not agree to pay 'x' and then got a bill for 'y'. It is not the dealer's job to get you the best deal. -

QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) I think it was a pretty productive stint for Skille, I think he showed that he can play in this league. Lets hope he goes back down and start dominating in Rockford. How Skille was not getting a better look than some of the worthless s*** that is the 3rd and 4th line is very indicative to the decision making going on with that team. Craig Adams is -12 has 5 points and does nothing yet he is getting ice time. I didn't even realize Skille had come back up after the AS break. -
QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Feb 14, 2008 -> 12:38 PM) It's probably too early to worry about the Supers, but since everyone else is, here's my $0.02. I assume (perhaps naively) that the majority of Supers are not a pack of fools. If Obama has a considerable lead of pledged delegates after things wash out, they will have to break for him. If Clinton has a considerable lead, they'll have to break for her. To me, this will be a test of the leadership of Howard Dean. If the delegate scenario plays out in favor of Obama, it will be Dean's job to convince Clinton to bow out gracefully. That will be the toughest thing Dean's ever done, more than likely, but it has to be done for the good of the party. If Obama has that considerable lead in pledged delegates and Clinton still takes the fight all the way to Denver and wins, then McCain will likely win in November, and Dean will be out of a job. It is like minor league baseball who as the most upside for the party. Hillary may be safe but can she beat McCain while Obama could energize the party and be as someone pointed out earleir the Democratic Reagan. The Republicans have served 20 of the last 28 years because of him IMHO. If the Clinton's were all that this would not be a race.

Without knowing the whole story if this person on disabiltiy had saved $30,000 she obviously has some sense to have saved up. Now without defending the dealer what if she had the potential to make good money. Again she somehow had $30K to kick around. If she stated to the salesman that she will get a good job and be able to make the payments he could do what he had to get her the car. If not she will go next door and eventually someone will get it for her and make the commission which is what he salesman needs as it is his livelihood At the end of the day he is wrong for assuming that her wage will be something but it is her responsability to understand what she is going to have to pay. If she agreed that she wanted to pay x amount a month, the dealer is going to got her that term for that car. If she truely feels she can not pay that she should walk away. The salesperson is going to get her what she wants as she is giving them $30K no mattter what. Now if she signs and agrees to the term of $300/mo and the contract is altered and she ends up with a payment of $800/mo then she has a case. There really is no comparison of this and hte old folks getting hosed or the no downpayment bad arm mortgages. The large downpayment makes her a good client to the dealer and worth the risk. -

Got mine Monday. Opening Day Lower Deck outfield and Friday cubs. Saturday cubs were gone in minutes no decent seats to begin with.

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 09:36 AM) Afghanistan was one thing. IRAQ is a whole other. They invaded a country saying they were supporting terrorists, only to find out later there were no links. Over the last 3+ years we have been fighting over when and how to get them out. Investigations into corruption within the administration, and other wrong doing. All the time Bush suppresses government reports on global warming. Gives the Kyoto accords the middle finger. Let's oil companies money rape American citizens, healthcare companies charge record prices, America ranks 24th in the world in broadband penetration, a national debt that is ballooning out of control, ignored all these "sub-prime" and intrest only loans that even I know were bad ideas and I didnt go to Yale. The mergers of large oil companies and telecom while XM/Sirius can not merge is all you need to know about the last 8 years, I am only being a tad smug.

QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 13, 2008 -> 09:14 AM) I'm not a fan of Pelosi at all. An endorsement when they were going to the polls in her state would have meant something. Really shows her true colors. On an other note I thought I heard last night that Obama would beat McCain but McCain would beat Hillary. The Superdelagates will look hard at this.

Think Obama throws out the first pitch Opening day? Although I am not certain of the primary schedule.

I find it really odd that a team that literally is unable to score is going after defensemen. The defense looks solid while the forwards go long periods of time druing a game while generating no offense. On the Perrault wide open net he still should have been able to do something. I know the pass was deflected. The shootout was frusatrating as hell. Toews is a god by the way. -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2008 -> 04:56 PM) We keep mentioning all of these big names, I could almost bet money that it is minor leaguers we have never heard of before that we get for Crede. He would be gone by now if that was the case. If Crede is healthy he is worth MLB talent. I believe he goes for Lowry and then Floyd is traded for Roberts. -
QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) Denver over Seattle in 1994. Golden State over Dallas last year. Fixed it for you

QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 09:31 AM) Not sure if you guys heard this or not, but there is a rumor floating around that Michigan and Florida might REDO their primaries post-March 4th. Rumor is Michigan would do some sort of a caucus, but Florida is a different story. They might take the "national average" and divide there delegates that way. Below is last nights Countdown with Kieth Olberman... I was going to ask if they could have a do over and schedule primaries yesterday but I thought my Al Gore VP question would get me yelled at.

The plane they found in the ocean is not the same plane. The reason for planting it...I do not know. The helicopter pilot was suppossed to be the airline pilot and he is now on the island now. Were the other three people supposed to be on the plane and the island finally got them? Hurley was not suppossed to be on the plane, you could say the same thing for Jack (trying ot get out of Sydney ASAP), Kate (was captured), Sun & Jin (Sun was suppossed to ditch Jin at the airport) not sure about Sayid.

I thought last night's was pretty interesting. I think you needed to be a bigger fan to enjoy it though.

I only watched the second half of the 2nd and most of 3rd and Bulin was great and the defense looked really good. The lack of forward play on this team is down right scary. Ruutu and Sharp and Kane sporadically were the only guys that looked like they were doing anything. Sorry but Havlat is an embarassment right now. Why Ruutu hasn't been on the first two lines all season is mind boggling. If DT goes after defense instead of offense this team will be going nowhere. Even if Williams and Toews are healthy they have no depth beyond their first two lines. I am writing Havlat off BTW. -
QUOTE(iamshack @ Feb 7, 2008 -> 04:42 PM) Well, did you read the update to the article, which discusses that Obama once was the one looking for more debate time during his Illinois Senatorial Campaign... Prior to a single debate ever having taken place. How many debates has there been? Debates do Obama no good at this point in time while they did Hillary no good when running for office in NY. How'd that IL campaign work out for Ryan BTW.......

QUOTE(Misplaced_Sox @ Feb 6, 2008 -> 10:18 PM) You are missing the point. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand. Of the 100% of resident of both Cabrini and the Robert Taylor homes that signed off on Daly's plan to turn the projects area into mixed income for both a new living standard only 15% are living in those mixed use homes. The majority live no where near Chicago, their jobs lost, relocated against their will when they have SIGNED contracts to right of property. How is that acceptable? Are we going back to Old father Daly's plan to ride around in fire trucks spraying down the homeless to get them to leave now. Can I ask an honest question here? How exactly would the situation have changed if all of residents were just given a rebuilt neighborhood? My understanding was that the residents could move to communities which would give their family greater opportunity educationally if moved to Tinley/Orland/Villa Park/Gurnee as oppossed to living in the Robert Taylor Homes. The housing projects as I understand them were not a socially viable commune for long term success for those living there. What jobs were the inhabitants of the Robert Taylor homes and Cabrini Green displaced from that were inaccessible from their new location? I am not naive enough to think there was no personal gain due to this process and the "rich got richer". I unfortunatly view this as a way of life for those with political power. I also do not see how the people living in these housing projects were unjustly treated unless you are telling me they were removed from their homes and not given another living arrangement as I was lead ot beleive the environment they were living in was not at all desirable.

I did not read the Gore attachment before posting my thoughts.

Blow me up if this is a really stupid question but could Al Gore want to be a VP with Obama because he really thinks there is an opportunity to have a say in politics and worldwide without having to run for president? Hence holding off on an endorsement until he sees the gravatational draw of the Obama candidacy....... I am pretty ignorant to politics compared to those in this forum BTW.

Martin Havlat is a shell of a player not just himself but any player. If he is hurt sit him down as he is doing nothing right now and if he is a pain in the ass in the lockerroom he is bringing this team with him. With the opportunities given him there should be some sort of positive result. I think if this team can end the season within a game or two of .500 I will view it as a positive based on the injuries. If someone would take Havalt at this point they should really think of moving him...assuming he is not playing injured. Which if he is, he should be sat down. -

From the city down 57 that is a really convenient mall. I go there often as it is so much easier to deal with then Orland when coming from the Beverly area. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 5, 2008 -> 11:50 AM) An interesting Verducci piece looking at the rule of thumb on how to increase the workload for a young pitcher without risking injuring them and which pitchers violated that rule last year. For him, the top 2 pitchers at the biggest injury risk are Ian Kennedy and Fausto Carmona. For what it's worth, Danks has pitched the same # of innings the last 2 years, 140 each year, which should tentatively put him on track for about 170 this year. Gavin Floyd has thrown 170 and 175 the last 2 years. I stopped reading when Nardi Contrearas was called a guru.
