It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ May 23, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) You know what they say about opinions. BigSqwert is an asshole? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 22, 2012 -> 08:12 AM) Damn. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 122.4 mph was the speed off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton's HR Monday. It's the fastest tracked in the history of ESPN Home Run Tracker. Wow, that was a hell of a shot.

I have their 18V LXT Li-Ion line. When I got my first tool, it was pretty early in the life cycle of the line so I anticipated that it'd be around for a while. People would be pretty angry if their $200-300 drills, saws etc. aren't supported after a couple of years.

I've killed a car battery before by neglecting to put it on a trickle charger. When I was considering what line of cordless tools to go with a couple of years ago, one of the main influencing factors was picking a well-known, professional-grade brand that would be likely to support a given battery technology/style for several years (ended up going Makita). It seems like a lot of the less expensive, consumer-level cordless products are always switching battery styles around.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 21, 2012 -> 07:39 PM) Glad to hear you avoided that, SS...what line(s) of work would you be looking at exactly? Engineering. I like the security industry that I'm in, but I'll be looking broadly. My degree is mechanical but i have more experience in projects. The company i work for was sold by the original owners a couple of years ago and completely mishandled since. It's a shame to see.

Any word on the memorial services? Family only or wool there be public visitation?

Laid off about 1/3 of staff today. I avoided the axe but I'll be updating my resume tonight.

There's messages and stances, but the movement isn't backed by established, national, well-connected political groups so it does lack strict organization and leadership. Those heavily involved with OWS would probably argue that's a feature, not a bug. Whether or not it continues to be relevant remains to be seen, but the OWS movement was at the very least effective in shifting the national narrative away from deficit cuts, deficit cuts, deficit cuts that the media was obsessed with last year.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:50 AM) Occupy hates starbucks But they'll drink it before a good protest walk.... That's 25 people in NYC. Not sure that can be expanded to a national, disjointed movement. edit: honestly I dropped that in here because I know the guy who was one of the organizers for that. He's a small business owner (the heroes of the right!) who has been active in leftist politics and protest movements since he was about 13 and isn't just some mindless kid protesting to be cool. There's many more like him.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:47 AM) Pretty sure most of those kids dont know WHO they are doing it for. I just got back from a 3rd world country and seeing and talking those people it was clear the two sides couldnt be further apart in their views. OWS is generally about reforming our financial, banking and taxation systems, primarily in developed countries, so that wages continue to grow and opportunities exist for the 99% instead of having all wealth created over the past few decades going to the 1%.* Anti-IMF/World Bank movements are generally going to be aligned with that, but that wasn't really the the primary focus of OWS. Like I said before there's a huge swath of issues here so you can't really lump all protesters and all views (or the people in developing countries) into one or two simple categories. *this is a quick and dirty summation of what I think OWS most prominently represents, not a statement on the accuracy of this position.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:42 AM) It hurts the redistribution of wealth/left behind message when you have trust fund kids at the forefront of the "movement." You don't need to be a trust fund kid to own a phone/tablet, but having some of the wealthy class also on your side of pro-distribution doesn't hurt the cause at all. People marching in and advocating for causes aren't necessarily or most often doing it for themselves.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:38 AM) I'm a fan of the typical occupy protestor - young white males with smart phones/laptops/tablets/video cameras talking about how unfair it is that older white males have lots of money. Yes and?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:35 AM) I'm aware it was just so hilarious. The same message is repeated when you see half the crowd has a damn starbucks coffee. Starbucks in Chicago was unionized with the IWW!
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:34 AM) These people have no message, they are weakly organized and have been infiltrated with people so dedicated to their message getting out that they cover their faces. The civil rights protests shown earlier in this thread were real people trying to do real things for their cause no matter what happened to them, these people are lost souls IMO. There's a bunch of different groups, not all with the same message and goals.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2012 -> 11:33 AM) union park protester this morning: "Why are you guys protesting Boeing's empty building?" "They are an evil corporation aimed at hurting innocent people" blah blah blah "Are you from the chicago area, are you a local?" "Nah I flew in from out of town" They made sure they flew airbus! Boeing is a huge military contractor, though.

I think I was the only one who said that violent protests may *possibly* be justified in some circumstances. This wouldn't be one of them.

A couple of Congressmen are trying to lift the ban that bars government propaganda from being used on US citizens. A somewhat related article digging into all of the FBI's terrorism "busts" of their own plots, why they're getting the wrong people and not focusing on the right people.
